Principal Software Engineer (Networking) - Platform

What Is The Role:
As part of the Platform Engineering department, the Traffic team is crafting, building, and improving the multi-cloud platform at scale for Elastic Cloud Hosted and Serverless. We grow and mature our distributed network services and solutions for multiple cloud service provider platforms. We are built on Kubernetes, Go/Scala, and custom orchestration architectures. In your daily life with us, you will participate in coding, innovating technical designs, crafting solutions, improving resilience, and prioritizing security, bug fixes, and features. For example, Debugging Azure Networking for Elastic Cloud Serverless is part of our efforts, and we want your experience to contribute to a truly exceptional customer experience!
What You Will Be Doing:
- Taking an engineering approach in leading technical initiatives for automating network engineering efforts to guarantee the reliability of the global Elastic infrastructure. .
- Growing our global Platform infrastructure to meet the increasing scaling demands by developing and maintaining software, codebases, tooling and automations.
- Collaborating in an environment with an inclusive approach, and focusing on operational perfection which uplifts others.
- Preventing repeated customer impact in response to major incidents and prioritised problem management. Our on call rotation is spread well, and we address complex customer concerns too.
What You Bring:
- 10+ years in Software Engineering with product success in delivering Cloud network solutions. You collaborate with engineers as an authority in identifying, implementing and delivering solutions. Experience in public cloud, Go and managed Kubernetes services is advantageous.
- Success and lessons of experiences from striving for 'progress not perfection' in the name of Platform reliability. We want to hear about your customer first approach in solving operational problems for both today and the future.
- Passion for developing solutions that involve inclusive communication methods to grow and strengthen partner and team relationships. Examples of working in distributed teams or working remotely is desirable.
Bonus Points:
You don't need to have all of these items, but these represent the types of work you will do as a Software Engineer at Elastic.
- You have designed and built a SaaS product in a public cloud ideally built using Infrastructure-as-Code tooling such as Crossplane or Terraform
- You have built Kubernetes-at-scale infrastructure, ideally across multiple cloud providers, and the vital automation to support it.
- You have written product features or functions in Golang or other programming languages.
- You have worked with containerized services (such as Docker.)
- You have proven results in leading and improving cross-team engineering initiatives.
- You have experience in system administration with professional skills in Linux on distributed systems at scale.
- You have diagnosed or designed, implemented and created solutions with the Elastic Stack.
- You are experienced in a self-organizing and sharing in a globally distributed team environment.
- You strengthen team members in bringing out the best of each other by uplifting others with coaching and mentoring.
Compensation for this role is in the form of base salary. This role does not have a variable compensation component.
The typical starting salary range for new hires in this role is listed below. In select locations (including Seattle WA, Los Angeles CA, the San Francisco Bay Area CA, and the New York City Metro Area), an alternate range may apply as specified below.
These ranges represent the lowest to highest salary we reasonably and in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the ranges may be modified in the future.
An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
Elastic believes that employees should have the opportunity to share in the value that we create together for our shareholders. Therefore, in addition to cash compensation, this role is currently eligible to participate in Elastic's stock program. Our total rewards package also includes a company-matched 401k with dollar-for-dollar matching up to 6% of eligible earnings, along with a range of other benefits offered with a holistic emphasis on employee well-being.

We’re looking for someone who can connect with our global audience through creative, educational, and visually engaging content. You don’t need to be a Senior Engineer — but you should have a strong technical foundation, curiosity to learn, and the skills to tell compelling stories about technology.
Your work will combine writing, visuals, and video — with no waiting on others to get it done. From drafting a Twitter thread in the morning to publishing an infographic and editing a short video in the afternoon, you’ll take ideas from concept to launch, end to end.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Create engaging technical content for social media, blogs, and YouTube, covering Search, AI, and Elasticsearch in ways that are approachable and inspiring. Topics range from foundational and evergreen topics to today's LLM release.
- Write short-form content (Twitter threads, LinkedIn posts) that distills complex concepts into clear, shareable insights.
- Produce simple, high-quality videos and infographics yourself — from scripting and recording to editing and publishing.
- Explore new trends in Search, AI, and developer tools, and translate them into content our audience cares about.
- Build demos and examples to support your content or share the highlights of the latest research papers.
- Add a creative spark to Elastic’s content to keep our community engaged and draw in new audiences.
What You Bring :
- Solid technical background and experience in an engineering role.
- Demonstrated ability to create a variety of content formats: blog posts, social media threads, videos, infographics.
- Comfortable working independently and seeing projects through from idea to publication without waiting on others.
- Curiosity and adaptability to quickly pick up new tools and topics.
- A collaborative mindset and willingness to share ideas, in a fully distributed team.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills in English.

What Is The Role:
We are on the lookout for a Senior Software Developer to join our Elasticsearch - Distributed Systems team and focus on how Elasticsearch provides scale, performance, and resilience. This team owns how nodes in an Elasticsearch cluster communicate, and how data are indexed, allocated, and replicated across nodes.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Improving Elasticsearch’s components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines.
- Maintaining our cluster coordination system to keep performance high even though nodes come and go from the cluster and data moves around, while maintaining the safety and liveness properties of the system as a whole.
- Pushing the limits on the number of shards, nodes, and petabytes that Elasticsearch can handle today
- Looking into all kinds of issues, including performance or concurrency issues, and proposing solutions.
- Supporting our support engineers with the harder problems.
What You Bring:
- A strong background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
- You have strong skills in core Java and are conversant in the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs, as well as newer language features.
- You have a deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
- You have shown your ability to understand and work on complex, highly distributed systems.
- You demonstrate the ability to build and debug features with a broad impact, running on multiple machines.
- You are able to own projects from beginning to end. This covers both technical design and working with others to develop needed components.
