We are looking for a Quantum Error Correction (QEC) Scientist. The role focuses on the theoretical analysis and development of quantum error correction methods and their implications for scalable photonic quantum computing.

The position sits within quantum computing theory, with an emphasis on the conceptual and mathematical aspects of error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computation. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of new QEC approaches and help shape directions for error-corrected quantum computing systems.

The role is primarily theoretical and centers on the development of new concepts in quantum error correction. It offers the opportunity to work on fundamental questions in QEC while contributing to the development of large-scale photonic quantum computing architectures.

We welcome applicants with backgrounds in quantum error correction as well as related areas of theoretical physics, mathematics, condensed matter theory, or information theory who are interested in applying their expertise to quantum computing.

Responsibilities

Key activities include:

• Develop and analyze theoretical approaches to quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computation, including logical encodings, logical operations, and structural properties of quantum codes.
• Study quantum codes and fault-tolerant protocols (e.g. logical operators, thresholds, measurement strategies, and resource scaling) and evaluate their role in error-corrected photonic quantum computing architectures.
• Contribute to the theoretical design and analysis of scalable photonic quantum computing architectures, including the integration of quantum error correction into larger computing systems.
• Perform analytical calculations or targeted numerical studies to explore code constructions, test conceptual ideas, or investigate specific technical questions.
• Contribute to discussions within the team on QEC strategies and help identify promising theoretical directions for fault-tolerant quantum computing.

The work may range from focused theoretical investigations to broader studies of fault-tolerant quantum computing systems.

Candidate profile

We are looking for a candidate with a solid theoretical background and a strong interest in quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Relevant qualifications include:

• A background in quantum computing, quantum error correction, theoretical physics, mathematics, or a closely related field.
• Knowledge of quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computation, including areas such as stabilizer codes, logical operator structure, decoding methods, threshold analysis, transversal or fault-tolerant gate constructions, topological or LDPC quantum codes, or related theoretical frameworks.
• Familiarity with the quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing literature, or the ability to quickly build a broad overview of the field and identify relevant research directions.
• Analytical and mathematical reasoning skills, including the ability to formulate theoretical questions and reason about abstract structures.
• The ability to read and understand advanced technical literature in quantum computing and related areas.
• Some experience with scientific programming or symbolic computation (e.g. Python, Mathematica, Julia) for exploratory calculations.
• The ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and collaborate effectively in a research-oriented team.

Experience with photonic quantum computing, measurement-based quantum computing, or fault-tolerant architecture studies is considered an advantage but is not required.
