ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
onX is seeking a Senior Geospatial Analyst to support the Offroad vertical, you will play a critical role in ensuring that Offroad-related geospatial content moves reliably through onX systems and into customers’ hands. You will collaborate closely with Offroad Product Managers, a Geospatial Project Manager, as well as with developers to execute geospatial work that supports the Offroad product roadmap.
This role is focused on implementation and delivery. You will apply strong technical judgment to build, maintain, and validate geospatial datasets and pipelines that are performant, scalable, and trustworthy.
This role lives within the Content domain, which is responsible for cartography, data processing, data analysis, and data sourcing across onX. You will be part of a broader team of Geospatial Analysts, Geospatial Project Managers, and Engineers supporting multiple verticals across the organization. This role reports to a Geospatial Manager.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Essential Job Duties & Functions
- Serve as the Senior Geospatial Analyst supporting the Offroad vertical, owning the technical approach, sequencing, and delivery of geospatial work defined by the Offroad Geospatial Project Manager.
- Execute geospatial work that supports connected content initiatives by implementing datasets and workflows that enable Offroad content to be used consistently across multiple product features and experiences.
- Support content trust initiatives by executing audits, refreshes, and cleanup of high-impact Offroad datasets, applying technical judgment to ensure content is accurate, maintainable, and fit for long-term use, including identifying dataset candidates for update, replacement, or retirement.
- Leverage existing geospatial pipelines and contribute to the improvement and development of new processes as needed, ensuring reliable delivery of data from source systems into customer-facing products and services.
- Lead complex geospatial processing and analysis such as multi-source data integration, conflation, and large-scale QA/QC, applying expert judgment to resolve ambiguity and edge cases.
- Use Claude Code and other AI tools to generate, optimize, and automate geospatial workflows, including feature extraction, segmentation, classification, conflation, and QA.
- Proactively identify data quality risks, pipeline gaps, or platform limitations and surface recommendations to the Offroad Geospatial Project Manager.
- Analyze data, create dashboards, and monitor data health metrics to provide insights that inform business decisions and support overall product health.
- Research and evaluate geospatial data sources, making recommendations for new sources or improvements to existing ones.
- Partner closely with engineers to ensure geospatial solutions are performant, maintainable, and aligned with platform best practices.
- Own the end-to-end execution quality of assigned initiatives, from intake through production release and post-launch validation.
- Use version control (Git) and collaborative workflows to drive consistency and repeatability across the broader Geospatial team.
- Provide technical guidance and informal mentorship to other Geospatial Analysts as needed.
- Communicate clearly and confidently about technical decisions, risks, and progress to cross-functional partners.
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Supervisor.Look for opportunities to embed AI as a repeatable co-pilot in daily workflows by integrating experimentation into real work, and continuously refining its use with sound judgment and validation.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in Geospatial, Geospatial Engineering, Computer Science, Hydrology, Geography, or related field; or equivalent technical experience.
- 8+ years of geospatial industry experience, including dataset sourcing, development, transformation, and deployment.
- Expert-level proficiency in QGIS and advanced geoprocessing techniques.
- Expert with SQL, cloud-based analytical databases (e.g., BigQuery), PostGIS, spatial indexing, and performance optimization.
- Strong Python skills, including experience with GDAL, geopandas, PyQGIS, and automation frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to operate within complex spatial data pipelines, using version control (Git), and collaborative workflows to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions.
- Proven ability to use Claude Code or other AI coding assistants to generate scripts, automate tasks, and accelerate spatial workflows.
- Familiarity with Offroad-relevant datasets such as trail networks, road and route conditions, terrain data, land ownership, or other location-based content used in off-road recreation and land-access contexts.
- Familiarity with trail data sources, vendors, and key players in that space.
- Proven ability to work autonomously on complex, ill-defined projects, bringing structure, clarity, and execution rigor to ambiguous problem spaces.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to non-technical partners.
- Ability to travel bi-annually for multiple days to a corporate office or other onX strategic location, such as a Basecamp.
ADDED BONUSES
Though not required, we would be thrilled to consider candidates with any of the following:
- Master's degree in Geospatial, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Experience with graph-based data systems, including knowledge graphs or hierarchical spatial data stores.
- Experience working with modern geospatial data formats such as GeoParquet for scalable storage and processing.
- Experience building micro-services or distributed workflows for spatial data.
- Familiarity with cloud-based storage, Airflow, and Docker.
- Interest in off-road recreation, trail and route planning, terrain navigation, or related outdoor recreation products.
- Experience with distributed or remote teams.

HOW YOU’LL BE COMPENSATED
onX is committed to compensating all employees fairly and equitably for their contributions. For this position, applicants can expect to make between $94,000 and $118,000 upon hire. The pay range will vary based upon experience, skills, certifications, education among other factors as required in the job description. In addition, full-time onX employees are eligible for a grant of common share options with a vesting schedule and an annual bonus of 10% based on company performance.

We are looking for a Data Scientist who views machine learning as a product, not just a research project. You will be a foundational member of our AI team, responsible for designing, building, and deploying sophisticated models that solve complex business problems. You aren't just an expert in XGBoost or Transformers; you are an expert in building the pipelines that make these models reliable, scalable, and impactful.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Essential Job Duties & Functions
- End-to-End Model Development: Design and implement the full ML lifecycle—from exploratory data analysis (EDA) and feature engineering to model selection, tuning, and validation.
- GCP Architecture: Leverage the full Google Cloud AI suite (Vertex AI, BigQuery ML, Dataflow, and Pub/Sub) to build robust, cloud-native ML solutions.
- MLOps & Engineering: Implement CI/CD for machine learning (CT - Continuous Training) to ensure models remain performant in production environments.
- Strategic Leadership: Partner with stakeholders to translate ambiguous business challenges into technical roadmaps. Mentor junior scientists and advocate for best practices in code quality and experiment tracking.
- Look for opportunities to embed AI as a repeatable co-pilot in daily workflows by integrating experimentation into real work, and continuously refining its use with sound judgment and validation.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- 5+ years in a professional Data Science role with a track record of deploying models at scale.
- Proficiency in Vertex AI, BigQuery, Cloud Storage, and Looker. Experience with Kubeflow is a major plus.
- Expert-level Python (pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow), Spark, and advanced SQL.
- Deep understanding of statistics and ML theory (e.g., Gradient Descent, Bias-Variance tradeoff, Bayesian inference).
- Experience with ETL/ELT processes, specifically using dbt.
- A strong curiosity for exploring new technologies, including AI

ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Staff Data Engineer is a senior leader responsible for designing and evolving core components of onX’s lakehouse and data platform. This role focuses on how data is structured, governed, secured, and described so that analytics, product features, and AI systems can operate reliably at scale.
This engineer operates at the intersection of data architecture, metadata, governance, and security, leading complex initiatives and setting technical direction within the Data Engineering organization. They are a trusted technical partner to Product, Analytics, Data Science, Security, and Platform teams, and serve as a force multiplier for other engineers through high-level technical guidance and active mentorship.
As an onX Data Engineer, your day to day responsibilities would look like:
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Design and evolve the Iceberg-based lakehouse architecture to balance scalability, cost, performance, and maintainability.
- Define and promote standards for table design, partitioning, schema evolution, optimization, and data layout.
- Lead architectural efforts spanning batch, streaming, and event-driven data processing where they deliver business value.
- Drive the design and delivery of complex, cross-team initiatives, enabling teams to move independently within established architectural guidance.
- Build vs. Buy: Evaluate and integrate technologies.
Metadata, Governance & Open Standards
- Define how datasets, pipelines, features, and models are described, related, and governed using shared metadata.
- Lead the adoption and integration of open-source metadata and catalog tools (e.g., OpenMetadata or similar ecosystems).
- Establish metadata standards that enable self-service analytics, governance, and AI readiness.
- Partner with BI and Analytics to ensure domain models are clearly documented and aligned to business language.
- Collaborate with Data Science to ensure model inputs, features, and outputs are traceable, explainable, and reusable.
Security, Access Control & Compliance
- Design and evolve security and access-control models for Apache Iceberg, including table-, column-, and row-level controls.
- Partner with Security and Platform teams to embed policy enforcement directly into data access paths.
- Drive metadata-driven authorization patterns that scale across tools and user groups.
- Ensure privacy, compliance, and regulatory requirements are incorporated into platform design.
- Balance strong security guarantees with usability to support safe self-service.
Platform Reliability & Operations
- Build and maintain automation for compaction, retention, lifecycle management, and cost controls.
- Establish observability standards that connect pipeline health, data quality, and reliability metrics.
- Provide architectural oversight during critical incidents and drive long-term 'Keep the Lights On' (KTLO) reduction.
- Recommend tooling and process improvements based on industry standards and operational experience.
Organizational Impact & Collaboration
- Align technical work with business priorities by understanding how data supports onX products and customer outcomes.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineers, product partners, and leadership.
- Lead and participate in architecture and design reviews, setting a high bar for technical rigor.
- Foster strong cross-team collaboration across Data Engineering, Platform, Security, Analytics, and Data Science.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, raising the technical bar across the team.
LOCATION
onX has created a thriving distributed workforce community across several US locations. This position can be performed from an onX corporate office, “Basecamp,” or “Connection Hub.”
- Corporate Offices: onX was founded in Montana with offices in Missoula and Bozeman. If you prefer to work in an office at least part of the time this is a great option.
- Basecamps: Basecamps are established virtual workforce communities where a sizable number of distributed team members group for work, volunteering, socializing, and adventure.
- Our current Basecamps are located within a 90-mile radius of the following: Austin, TX; Charlotte, NC; Denver, CO; Kalispell, MT; Minneapolis, MN; Portland, OR; Salt Lake City, UT; and Seattle, WA.
- Connection Hubs: Connection Hub locations are smaller, emerging communities of distributed team members.
- Our current Connection Hubs are located within a 60-mile radius of the following: Boise, ID; Charleston, SC; Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; Phoenix, AZ; Richmond, VA; Spokane, WA; and Vermont.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- Deep industry experience (typically 12+ years) building and operating large-scale data systems.
- Deep expertise in distributed data systems and data architecture.
- Strong experience with Apache Iceberg and similar table formats (Delta Lake, Hudi).
- Proven experience designing secure and governed data platforms.
- Expertise in Python, SQL, and orchestration patterns (e.g., Airflow).
- Experience working with data ecosystems, including metadata, catalog, or governance tooling.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Permanent U.S. work authorization.
Cloud & Platform Experience
- Deep experience in at least one major cloud environment (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
- Familiarity with cloud-native data services such as query engines, stream/batch processing systems, and object storage–based lakehouses.
- Comfort with infrastructure-as-code and automated platform management.
COMPENSATION
onX is committed to compensating all employees fairly and equitably for their contributions. For this position, applicants can expect to make between $175,000 to $218,000 upon hire. The pay range will vary based on experience, skills, certifications, and education among other factors as required in the job description. In addition, full-time onX employees are eligible for a grant of common share options with a vesting schedule and a potential annual bonus of 10% based on company performance.
