We are looking for a talented and inquisitive Principal Firmware Engineer / Team Lead whose drive for learning and determination for continuous improvement aligns with our ambitious, fast-growing and transforming company. Based in Melbourne, you will be a key player in the Research & Development team that designs the wearable tracking hardware that Catapult is famous for. You will be working with the most cutting edge technology and integrating components across our wearables and stadium infrastructure. Reporting to the Engineering Director, the primary responsibility of the Principal Firmware Engineer / Team Lead is to develop firmware solutions for the elite sports industry. You will be responsible for the firmware development cycle and to ensure that our products have a high level of quality.

Our engineers drive this ethos by making sure all of this technology comes together in a way our customers love to use.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Lead a team which brings up new hardware from scratch, and develops device trees and boot chains.
- Develop Linux kernel for ARM Cortex-A hardware platforms, and wireless firmware for ARM Cortex hardware platforms.
- Lead team DevOps practices, engineering processes, and design discussions with the view of continuously lifting quality and improving.
- Drive best practices around code quality and organization throughout the entire development process and in coordination with team objectives.
- Promote innovation, lead technical strategy and architecture planning, discussion, and collaboration through documentation.
- Providing technical guidance, career development, and mentoring to team members.
- Take a player-coach approach to leadership, be a multiplier and have a passion for team and team members’ success.
- Partner with product managers to align on objectives, priorities, tradeoffs and risk.
- Ensure teams have clear priorities and adequate resources to execute on plan.
- Work in multidisciplinary teams and interface with other engineers in our team and across various disciplines to create alignment.
- Lead firmware engineering “chapters” where best practice is shared amongst other firmware engineers within the business.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Formal qualifications in electronics or software engineering.
- At least 5-10 years of firmware development experience.
- Demonstrated experience programming with C, C++ and Python.
- Demonstrated Linux (e.g. Yocto/PetaLinux) experience including building the kernel, developing custom kernels, device trees, and developing Linux drivers.
- Demonstrated experience with common wireless communications standards and protocols, such as BLE, Wi-Fi, UWB and long range/low bit rate applications.
- Experience developing products, scaling them and supporting them throughout the entire lifecycle.
- Experience bringing up new hardware from scratch.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and time management skills.
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and product management to understand requirements, describe firmware product features, and technical designs.
- Ability to be nimble, proactive, comfortable working with minimal specifications.
- A solid understanding of what high performance looks like, and how to drive it.
- Experience with Atlassian’s platform for defect tracking and documentation is highly desired.
- Experience with Git code management is highly desired.
- Experience with Rust or a willingness to learn it is highly desirable.
- Occasionally providing technical support to customers (which may be on the weekend or after hours).

About the Job
Senior Software Engineers independently drive the delivery of a variety of embedded and/or safety critical software integrated in to our products. This includes device management, drivers, firmware, power management, networking, and contingency management and recovery. We expect Senior Software Engineers to demonstrate end-to-end outcome ownership at the major subsystem or system level. Senior Software Engineers contribute as a technical lead to the rapid architecting, design, delivery, support, and evolution of next generation autonomous platforms through their entire product life-cycle.
What You’ll Do
- Design and implement trusted, safety critical Vehicle Management Systems that balance constraints, restrictions and requirements in a multi-stakeholder environment.
- Design and implement scalable vehicle sub-systems including sensor processing, state estimation, contingency management, actuation, payload interfaces, and mission systems interfaces
- Contribute to the design and development of existing software components across Anduril, with the aim of developing components that are re-usable across multiple Anduril product lines
- Develop real-time embedded software using an RTOS.
- Develop device drivers and interfaces to a variety of sensors and actuators.
- Create test and simulation fixtures that operate with both software-and hardware-in-the-loop.
- Support vehicle manufacturing and deployment.
- Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, including as a mentor for Software Engineers from differing backgrounds
- Travel to co-locate with end-users and/or other teams up to 20% of the time
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Engineering, a relevant field, or equivalent experience
- Experienced and proficient at writing C.
- Experience with an RTOS.
- Familiarity with communications busses and protocols (e.g. CAN, CANFD, UART/RS232/RS422/RS485, SPI, QSPI, I2C, Ethernet, ARINC-825, ARINC-429, MIL-STD-1553, etc).
- Systems programming skills including algorithms, data structures, concurrency and optimization.
- Capacity to act as the technical owner for a software component, including stakeholder engagement, requirements definition, roadmap management, team co-ordination, design, implementation, sustainment and evolution
- Capacity to learn and grow individually, while mentoring junior team members effectively, contributing to team cohesion and capacity.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain an active Australian Government Security Clearance
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in design and development of embedded applications in autonomous vehicle software systems.
- Experience with development of high assurance safety critical software applications.
- Experience in developing interfaces to sensors and actuators.
- Experience troubleshooting and analyzing remotely deployed software systems.
- Experience working with and testing electrical and mechanical systems.
- Experience with DO-178, IEC 61508, or similar certifications.
- Familiarity with navigation and communications systems.
- Experience within the product delivery lifecycle including manufacturing, system acceptance, deployment, and sustainment.
- Familiarity with Systems Engineering concepts
- Desire to learn and grow in to other roles that require experience as a Senior Software Engineer, such as Staff Software Engineer and/or Software Engineering Manager
- Desire to grow in to a Tech-Lead-Manager role, with responsibility for line management of engineers, in addition to delivery

A Senior Embedded Software Engineer at STR will engage as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers dedicated to developing cutting-edge vulnerability research technologies. Our work targets the boundary between the digital and physical worlds by creating models of physical systems, probing interfaces for weaknesses, and reverse engineering software.
What you will do:
- Working as part of a small team to design, develop, and test software applications and tools, in languages such as C, C++, and Python
- Ensuring software quality through the practice of unit-level and system-level tests and verification Integrating software components using networking/messaging technologies
- Packaging software for ease of configuration control, delivery, and deployment
- Communicating technical foundations of software designs and implementations through reports and presentations
Who you are:
- This position requires an Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by the U.S. Government.
- BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field with 5 years of experience (or MS and 3 years)
- Deep knowledge of at least one of the following topics: microcontroller software, embedded systems, firmware, kernels, or drivers
- Proficiency in at least one compiled and one scripting programming language
- Familiarity with assembly language, operating systems internals (e.g., file systems, IO, memory management, device drivers), threading, compiler technologies (e.g., GCC, LLVM)
- Experience with software scripting and build automation tools (e.g., bash, make)
- Applied skills using collaborative source code management and software engineering tools (e.g., Git, Subversion, Gitlab)
Nice to have:
- Experience working on classified programs
- Proficiency in C, C++, and Python
- Understanding of common software vulnerabilities, and secure programming principles
- Experience with containers (e.g., Docker), virtualization technologies (e.g., QEMU), network communications frameworks (e.g., TCP/IP sockets), and unit test frameworks
- Knowledge of static and dynamic analysis
Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $134,000 - $184,000
