We are looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer for Application Engineering. As a Sr Software Engineer on the Applications Engineer team, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to deliver real-world applications and value from the leap forward in computing enabled by quantum technology.
We don't just build the world's best quantum computers - we apply cutting edge quantum computing tools to real world problems. Until now, our team of Applications Scientists have been building prototypes, working closely with our customers. Our new department, Applications Engineering, will ultimately help transform proven quantum computing use-cases pioneered by our scientists into production applications, making those innovations available to more people and businesses by packaging and deploying these tools as SaaS applications.
But first, we must mature existing proof-of-concept quantum code into production grade applications. As a hands-on team lead for a new engineering team, you will work on enhancing developer experience (DevEx) by applying best practices to research-grade code. You will also set up CI / CD pipelines, software packing tools, and pre/post flight tests for new algorithms as they go into deployment. Where possible you will also be in charge of optimizing and parallelizing traditional algorithms, to reduce pre-processing and post-processing workloads. You will spearhead a new team taking newly invented quantum applications, and turning them into well defined modules of reliable SaaS applications. Think of it as being a forward-deployed engineer for quantum computing applications; the strongest candidates will be generalists with wide-ranging interests.
This team will work closely with Developer Tools, Infrastructure, and Product teams to solve problems by choosing the right technologies, and standardizing and automating those solutions. The right engineer will be comfortable working on refining chemistry simplification via Quantum Computing tool one quarter, and turning a novel quantum topology solver into a service the next - and love pair programming with scientists. They’ll bring the quantum expertise; you bring the deep and broad experience in classical programming.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with Application scientists to help deliver cutting-edge solutions for customers
- Elevate Applications code quality generally through architectural review, code review, standards, and best practices
- Improve Applications pace of delivery by creating CI / CD pipelines and other packaging automation, as well as test infrastructure and coverage
- Help productize computing code, especially improving data processing in pre-quantum and post-quantum processing steps
- Work closely with peers in Applications, Developer Tools, and Product teams to share best practices and feedback on internal tools
- Reporting to the Director of Application Engineering, help hire and mentor developers on the team
You’d be a good fit with:
- 12+ years of experience as a backend or full-stack developer, preferably in Python or Golang
- 5+ years of experience in setting up and maintaining CI / CD pipelines, in Github Actions, Jenkins, or similar tools
- 5+ years of experience in C/C++ or Rust
- 3+ years of experience in Docker, k8s, or similar containerization technologies
- A track record of shipping containerized applications that solve real business problems
- Previous work in scientific computing, quantum computing, or a related field
- Daily usage of augmented coding tools like Claude or Gemini
You’d be a great fit with:
- 5+ years of experience in scientific computing, especially with data analysis using numpy, pandas, or similar
- Experience in HPC or performance optimization
- Experience in converting traditional algorithms into CUDA, OpenMP workflows, or similar parallelization experience
- Experience with workflow orchestration engines like Airflow, Dagster, or Temporal

The approximate base salary range for this position is $192,979 - $252,659. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity.
Compensation will vary based on individual factors such as education, qualifications, and experience of the final candidate(s), specific office location, and calibration against relevant market data and internal team equity. About the Role

What You’ll Do

What You’ll Bring
- Deep understanding of the Cybersecurity product landscape with a focus in vulnerability exploitation lifecycle and Cyber Kill Chain
- A comprehensive understanding of the roles, interactions, and challenges in incident response, vulnerability management, and SOC analysis/management, including how each can leverage vulnerability intelligence for support.

Overview of Opportunity
We are seeking a high-caliber Senior Backend Engineer with a rare blend of legacy expertise and modern systems design. You will be tasked with bridging the gap between established Java infrastructures and high-performance Golang development.
This role is not for the faint of heart. You will be responsible for deconstructing, re-architecting, and rewriting large, mission-critical codebases that power global telecommunications, ensuring they are scalable, resilient, and future-proof.
This is a remote role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legacy Transformation: Take ownership of large, complex Java codebases and strategically migrate towards high-performance Golang microservices.
- Protocol Development: Design and maintain low-level communication interfaces involving SS7 (MAP) and DIAMETER protocols.
- System Architecture: Build and optimize highly available resilient systems capable of handling multiple client connections.
- Database Management: Design schemas and optimize queries for both MySQL and PostgreSQL to ensure data integrity and performance. Understand existing data structures and migrate them as appropriate.
- Queue Management: Implement and manage robust job queues and asynchronous task frameworks to handle API traffic and background processing.
Technical Requirements:
- Dual-Stack Understanding: Expert-level proficiency in both Java and Golang. You should be equally comfortable navigating existing code and writing equivalent high-concurrency Go routines.\
- Telecom Domain Knowledge: A deep, fundamental understanding of Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) and DIAMETER. You should be comfortable discussing the signaling stack from the MTP layers through to the application part.
- Database Expertise: Advanced experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL, including performance tuning and distributed database patterns.
- Task Orchestration and Notifications: Deep understanding of job queues and task management (e.g., RabbitMQ, Kafka, or custom-built Go workers).
- API Capability: Comfortable with API models and specifying and writing endpoints to be used by adjacent applications.

What you'll do
As an Senior Platform DevEx engineer, you'll be a part of a highly experienced cross-functional team of around 20, building and maintaining tools and systems that allow developers across NCBI to build, deploy, and maintain software and web services that are used around the world.
You should be prepared to work on:
- GitLab CI pipeline configuration, templates, and components to build a standardized ecosystem for developers across the organization to use for their applications, in many languages, from C++ to Scala, Kotlin, and Python.
- Python applications, scripts, and libraries to provide interfaces for DevOps and customer tools to manage builds, deployments, and more.
- Kubernetes configuration templates using the YTT templating language to create and maintain customizable patterns for consistent deployments across application teams
- Debugging deployments on Kubernetes distributions like Openshift and Anthos and using plugins like ArgoCD, Istio, and more.
- Documentation knowledge bases for each component project and the DevEx platform as a whole, in READMEs and on Confluence.
- Leading smaller projects within the DevEx teams to add new capabilities to the platform.
What we look for
While we have roles at all levels of experience, we are looking for senior proactive developers with experience building software or maintaining DevOps infrastructure and a strong interest in learning more.
Required Skills
- 7+ years of direct experience
- Strong coding fluency in at least one programming language. NCBI uses Python, C++, JavaScript/Typescript, some Kotlin & Scala, and small amounts of Golang and Rust.
- A working knowledge of Linux systems and the command line
- Familiarity with source control, CI/CD pipelines, package publishing, and containerization
Preferred skills and experience
- Experience developing CLI applications
- Experience building and deploying web APIs to cloud services or Kubernetes

NCBI is a Linux shop, candidates need adequate level of Linux command-line skills. Sysadmin-level skills are a bonus.

The Platform Services team builds and maintains the systems that software developers across NCBI use to ensure that they are consistently pushing and deploying high quality code that complies with Federal Standards for application security and mature code practices. We're involved in the entire development lifecycle including:
- Tools for creating and setting up new projects consistently across the org.
- CI pipelines and build tools for consistent expectations across languages and application frameworks
- Testing frameworks and metrics to assure only quality and secure code can be sent to production.
- Deployment and publishing pipelines to bring applications to their users in on-premises and cloud environments, and to provide public access to Open Source projects.
- Integrations for the secure management of deployment parameters, credentials, and more.
- Tooling to allow applications to communicate asynchronously, monitor performance metrics, debug live applications and much more.
What you'll do
As an Platform DevEx engineer, you'll be a part of a cross-functional team of around 20, building and maintaining tools and systems that allow developers across NCBI to build, deploy, and maintain software and web services that are used around the world.
You should be prepared to work on:
- GitLab CI pipeline configuration, templates, and components to build a standardized ecosystem for developers across the organization to use for their applications, in many languages, from C++ to Scala, Kotlin, and Python.
- Python applications, scripts, and libraries to provide interfaces for DevOps and customer tools to manage builds, deployments, and more.
- Kubernetes configuration templates using the YTT templating language to create and maintain customizable patterns for consistent deployments across application teams
- Debugging deployments on Kubernetes distributions like Openshift and Anthos and using plugins like ArgoCD, Istio, and more.
- Documentation knowledge bases for each component project and the DevEx platform as a whole, in READMEs and on Confluence.
- Leading smaller projects within the DevEx teams to add new capabilities to the platform.
What we look for
While we have roles at all levels of experience, we are looking for proactive developers with some experience building software or maintaining DevOps infrastructure and a strong interest in learning more.
Required Skills
- Strong coding fluency in at least one programming language. NCBI uses Python, C++, JavaScript/Typescript, some Kotlin & Scala, and small amounts of Golang and Rust.
- A working knowledge of Linux systems and the command line
- Familiarity with source control, CI/CD pipelines, package publishing, and containerization
Preferred skills and experience
- Experience developing CLI applications
- Experience building and deploying web APIs to cloud services or Kubernetes
- Familiarity with container orchestration tools like Kubernetes or Nomad, and Kubernetes distributions like OpenShift Container Platform, Anthos, GKE, AKS, EKS, etc.
- Familiarity with observability tools like Prometheus, the EFK (ElasticSearch, fluentd, Kibana) or TIGK (Telegraph InfluxDB, Grafana, Kapacitor) stacks, DataDog, Sensu, Jaeger, Sentry, or OpsGenie.
- Familiarity with GitLab CI/CD pipelines
Bonus skills and experience
- Experience building high availability applications
- Experience configuring multi-tenent Kubernetes clusters
- Familiarity with Service Mesh techlolgies like Istio or Linkerd
- Familiarity with event bus technologies like Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS Kenesis, etc.
- Familiarity with data processing and distributed computing tools like Apache Spark or Airflow
- Familiarity with secret management tools like Hashicorp Vault, Azure KeyVault, Google Secret Manager, etc.
