About this role:

GiveDirectly is seeking a Global Head of Country Operations to strengthen and scale operations across all our country offices. This role will shape the operating model that powers GiveDirectly’s next decade of growth. They will build strong country office foundations and level up our ability to scale and serve recipients excellently and adaptively, working in partnership with our COO and other department leads across the organization. The ideal candidate has delivered results across a diverse set of contexts, brings order to chaos, and can partner with senior leaders as well as they can roll up their sleeves to get critical work shipped.. This is a rare opportunity to architect the backbone of a global organization delivering hundreds of millions of dollars per year.

What you’ll do: 

Strengthen and standardize country operations

• Ensure clear roles, crisp accountability, and strong operating routines.
• Define and implement simple, scalable operating models across HR, finance, procurement, compliance, IT, security, and risk.
• Embed global standards in context-appropriate ways that reduce friction so dollars reach recipients faster and more reliably.

Coordination between program teams and central functions

• Coordinate and represent country office realities in global standards setting, priority setting, and resource allocation
• Ensure rollout of global standards in ways that are context appropriate, user-friendly, meaningful, and rigorous

Drive strong financial management and performance

• Oversee financial management across all country offices ($350M+/year), ensuring budgets enable scale and mitigate risk.
• Establish clear KPIs, dashboards, and operating reviews to maintain cost-efficiency.

Lead country expansions and transitions

• Oversee new country launches and compliant wind-downs with clear playbooks and risk mitigation.
• Coordinate across functions to ensure smooth execution.

Strengthen systems and institutional capability

• Translate operational insights into repeatable systems, tools, and automation that reduce manual work.
• Champion continuous improvement and technology adoption to scale efficiently and nimbly.

Enable proactive risk and cross-org alignment

• Maintain a global risk framework and lead or support crisis management when needed.
• Serve as the operational bridge between country leadership and global teams, ensuring priorities are well-resourced and executed consistently.

Example Deliverables

• Partner with COO to refresh roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities and how they are split between country directors and global shared services departments
• Lead an ops & finance working group to to identify and test step-change efficiency improvement at scale (using budget & process data, then piloting changes)
• Launch a new country office in a crisis-prone region in 3 months
• Systematize contracting approval processes to cut cycle time  by 2x while maintaining compliance & auditability.

• Base Salary: $145,000 (Senior Director Level) or $170,700 (Higher Level)

United Kingdom

• Base Salary: £106,374 (Senior Director Level) or £122,330 (Higher Level)

• Estimated Total Compensation at Target: £122,330+ (Senior Director Level) or £140,680+ (Higher Level)

Kenya

• Base Salary: $120,000 (Senior Director Level) or $145,000 (Higher Level)
• Bonus at Target Performance: 15% (~$18,000 or $21,750, with potential for upside. For reference, with the organization’s current performance multiplier, this amount would be $21,060 or $25,448 in 2025)

About the Role

We believe that new technology is critical to building the most effective rural distribution network on the African continent. Today, we reach over 1.6 million farm families and we aspire to serve more than 10 million households in the coming decade. Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will lead the development of our technology, focusing on a mobile tech transformation: providing our field staff with the mobile-based tools to reach more farmers; developing scalable, direct communication channels with farmers to improve customer service; and digitizing and decentralizing data collection tools to speed up data flows and improve efficiency.

We are looking for someone with the technical experience to bring this vision to life; the Director of Engineering will transform our technology into a core organizational strength, working through several development teams that cross our tech stack

Responsibilities

• Own the tech stack and overall architecture and strategic direction: You will guide our team to work toward a common vision of our tech stack, ensuring a robust solution across all of our technical needs whether back-office, client-facing, or business intelligence needs.
• Lead efficient delivery of impactful software products: Provide detailed, hands-on guidance for tech projects based on an intimate understanding of our clients and internal users. Maintain a robust and well-documented architecture, balancing elegant design with practical requirements across our functional needs.
• Leverage Talent into an Agile Center of Excellence: Support a talented team to work at their best - support Agile processes that go beyond scrum ceremonies to drive efficiency and excellence in all areas. Use new technologies to support the velocity and quality of deployments.
• Develop Leaders and Build Team: Manage a leadership team of ~5 senior-level direct reports, and increase career growth and performance across the division.

Qualifications

Across all roles, these are the general qualifications we look for. For this role specifically, you will have:

• 10+ years of industry experience with 5+ years leading and managing technology teams.
• Experience working with mobile technology solutions.
• Passion for providing hands-on execution guidance for large teams.
• Experience managing Agile software engineering teams successfully deploying solutions to support complex processes.
• Experience translating complex customer needs into high-quality tech solutions that deliver impact.
• Experience with our tech (C# .Net Core, CouchBase, React Native, and Kubernetes) and our tooling landscape (GitHub, JIRA, and Azure DevOps).
• Humility. We are looking for a passionate professional who combines a focus on excellent performance with good humor, patience, and a service mindset interested in joining our family of leaders.
• Language: English is required in all locations.
