An overview of this role
As a Staff Engineer on GitLab's Software Composition Analysis team, you'll drive hands-on implementation of security features that help customers understand and manage risks in their software supply chain. Your focus will be on enhancing GitLab's SCA capabilities in dependency scanning and container scanning. You'll work directly on architecture and technical implementation and help the team push forward on three core goals: Gather (introducing data points that help customers understand the urgency of issues, like reachability analysis and supply chain poisoning detection), Integrate (providing other teams with innovative collection techniques for better workflows), and Optimize (solving data correlation at massive scale). You'll contribute hands-on code, help solve novel technical challenges, and establish patterns that improve how the distributed team works together across multiple time zones.

About the team
The Software Composition Analysis team is part of GitLab's Sec Engineering group, and we focus on building capabilities that help customers identify and manage risks in their software supply chain. We work across areas including dependency scanning, container scanning, and license scanning, and we work closely with product, UX, security, and adjacent engineering teams to close important feature gaps in GitLab's platform. Our team members are distributed across regions including Europe and North America, so we rely on clear documentation, asynchronous communication, and thoughtful coordination across time zones. This opportunity is centered on helping us deliver complex security features while balancing hands-on technical progress with strong team execution.
The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of the United States only. This range is intended to reflect the role's base salary rate in locations throughout the US. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, alignment with market data, and geographic location. We’re looking for a Staff/Senior Machine Learning Platform Engineer to join our Machine Learning Platform Team, which powers end-to-end infrastructure for model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring at scale. Our platform supports daily execution of hundreds of ML models and processes billions of data records across batch and streaming pipelines.
In this role, you’ll shape the architecture and core components of our ML platform—covering batch (Spark), streaming (Flink), job orchestration (Argo on Kubernetes), and infrastructure tools—while ensuring the platform remains robust, scalable, and developer-friendly. You’ll also champion best practices and modern development tools including LLM-based programming assistants.

Serve as a technical advisor to Anthropic customers as they deploy new products & workflows with our models: from discovery through deployment, coordinating internally across multiple teams to drive customer success
Partner with account executives to deeply understand customer product requirements and architect technical solutions, ensuring alignment between business objectives and technical implementation
Guide technical architecture decisions and help customers build state-of-the-art products & workflows with LLMs via API
Develop customized pilots, prototypes, and evaluation suites that make the case for customer deployment of our models into customer products and workflows via our API
Lead hands-on technical workshops and code reviews with customer engineering teams
Identify common design patterns and contribute insights back to our Product and Engineering teams
Maintain strong knowledge of the latest developments in LLM capabilities, implementation patterns, and AI product development stacks
Travel occasionally to customer sites for workshops, implementation support, and building relationships
Attend conferences, lead speaking engagements, write blog posts and white papers on topics surrounding the AI space
4+ years of experience in a technical roles such as Customer Engineer, Forward Deployed Engineer, Software Engineer or Technical Product Manager with a desire to work closely with customers
Production experience with LLMs including advanced prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks, and deployment at scale
Strong programming skills with proficiency in Python and experience building production applications
Expertise working with common LLM implementation patterns, prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, agent frameworks, and retrieval frameworks.
Ability to navigate ambiguity and execute across domains with intellectual openness, finding simple solutions to complex problems
