Position Overview
The Survey Technician partners with the Professional Land Surveyor on a diverse range of responsibilities to ensure the successful execution of land survey projects. The role requires the preparation of comprehensive survey documents, including detailed maps, plats, and precise boundary descriptions, utilizing industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Carlson Survey, and Civil 3D, alongside Microsoft Office Suite. The technician will maintain meticulous records of survey data and field notes, ensuring project documentation is organized and accessible. Additionally, the role involves assisting with the preparation of daily field packages and managing field work schedules to optimize team efficiency. The Survey Technician II works closely with the manager when completing assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepares a variety of survey documents per applicable state and local municipality standards (i.e. ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey, Existing Conditions, topographic, plats, etc.) and obtain basic information from these maps upon request
• Independently writes legal descriptions for survey documents
• Performs land records research and has knowledge of different governmental offices and the records they maintain
• Compiles deeds and plats into a deed sketch
• Assist with staking computations, and possess a general knowledge of construction staking principles and stake markings
• Assist in preparation of field crew packages and point maps
• Responsible for escalating potential hazards and unsafe working conditions
• Maintains good client relations to foster and perpetuate a long-term relationship
• Represents McAdams in the field with professional image through proper conduct and presentable appearance
• Follow guidelines and company standards set forth by the Geomatics department
• Aids in maintaining a safe and respectful work environment by following company policies and procedures

Skills + Experience

• High School Diploma or GED
• BS or associate’s degree with emphasis on Surveying, Geomatics or Computer Aided Drafting and/or have achieved certification as an NSPS CST Level II preferred
• 2-5 years of work experience in surveying
• General knowledge of geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and basic Land Surveying fundamentals and computations
• Possess a strong technical knowledge of AutoCAD, Carlson survey and Civil 3D software, along with Microsoft Office
• Able to generate a surface model from survey data sets and understand the principals of interpolating elevations
• Ability to read and interpret DOT Right-of-Way plans, site plans, grading plans, utility plans and profiles, horizontal and vertical curves, foundation plans, and architectural plans
• Able to take direction and execute with accuracy and thoroughness
• Communicate and work well with others
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Successfully pass a motor vehicle records check, drug test, and functional assessment
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with managers and peers

Work Environment + Physical Demands

• Work will primarily be outside with varying environmental conditions.
• Work will involve long-term standing and frequent walking as well as include common hazards encountered while maneuvering through project sites.

• Must be able to carry, lift and push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
• Must be able to stand up or walk between 8-12 hours a day.
• Weekend and overtime and/or overnight work and travel may be required.

Your duties will include supervising and managing the daily operations of the survey staff, as well as building and nurturing relationships with both public and private clients to provide high-quality land surveying services. Your goal is to ensure successful project delivery while meeting established performance objectives.  

Essential Functions + Responsibilities 

• Lead the land surveying team, provide resource management, resolve complex technical problems, coach, train, and mentor land surveying staff members, and work collaboratively with all team members on all aspects of project execution. 
• Establish, promote, and ensure quality on all project and work performed by group staff. 
• Promote a culture of safety among the survey staff members. 
• Develop proposals or contracts that ensure the contract scope is adequate for the project, provide the desired level of profitability, and ensure that the project schedule is viable. 
• Understand business initiatives and concerns of current and prospective clients to recognize and promote new opportunities and cross-sell other services provided by the firm. 
• Assist in the development of short-term and long-term strategic market sector plans. 
• Develop and foster client relations to perpetuate long term relationships. 
• Responsible for the profitable operation of the Tampa/Orlando surveying group. 

Qualifications 

• Must be a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor in the State of Florida.
• Bachelors in Geomatics preferred.
• 2-5 years years of office/field experience in Land Surveying.
  
• Highly motivated to develop and grow the land surveying sector within the region.
  
• Show the ability to work within a multi-discipline engineering firm for many clients with differing project deliverables standards.
  
• Demonstrate the ability to lead a team of surveying professionals.
  
• Demonstrate ability to independently manage and grow key client relationships.
  
• Possess the technical abilities required to lead and advise the surveying project team through project execution and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Review scope of contract and execute deliverables within the prescribed contract schedule
• Monitor time charges and adjustments to the project, where possible, to keep project within budget
• Recognize changes in scope/scope creep and confer with Group Manager and/or Director to negotiate appropriate adjustments in contract price and/or schedule
• Provide status updates to internal/external stakeholders
• Make final decisions for all survey and staking technical matters
• Review all deliverables for quality control and adherence to company standards before external release of maps and staking data
• Coordinate project submittals with local municipalities
• Discuss with all project personnel as necessary to provide technical advice and resolve problems
• Maintain close contact with client throughout project duration; ensure their satisfaction through information exchange about progress, quality of the work, and the proposed processes and applications
• Foster long-term relationships with past and current clients
• Cross-sell services to other departments or clients
• Pursue continuous, deep knowledge of current trends within the industry
• Provide feedback on staff performance and training needs to Group Manager
• Maintain a safe work environment for all crew members
• Communicate respectfully with clients or project neighbors to insure a positive company image
• Follow guidelines and company standards set forth by the Geomatics department
• Aids in maintaining a safe and respectful work environment by following company policies and procedures
