Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Engineer to lead Emergency Relief System (ERS) design projects. This role involves performing reactive chemical hazard analysis using advanced adiabatic calorimetry techniques. The position requires advanced technical knowledge in process safety, thermal runaway behavior, and two-phase vent sizing, with hands-on expertise using adiabatic reaction calorimeters such as PHI-TEC II, APTAC, and/or VSP2.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and analysis of Emergency Relief Systems (ERS) in accordance with DIERS methodology, API 520/521, ASME B31.3, and other relevant industry standards.
• Operate and maintain the PHI-TEC II adiabatic reaction calorimeter to characterize thermal runaway and pressure generation behavior of reactive chemicals.
• Analyze calorimetry data to determine heat release rates, pressure rise rates, time to maximum rate (TMR), and vent sizing requirements.
• Perform two-phase flow and homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM) calculations to support design of rupture disks, pressure relief valves, and containment systems.
• Author clear and concise technical reports summarizing test results, ERS sizing calculations, and risk mitigation recommendations.
• Collaborate with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams, fostering a respectful and inclusive working environment where diverse perspectives contribute to the best outcomes. (e.g. PHA, HAZOP, LOPA)
• Engage in business development activities to help grow and strengthen this service line.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in process safety engineering, with a focus on ERS design and reactive hazard evaluation.
• Demonstrated success working in the consulting industry with diverse clients and project teams.
• Strong understanding of vent sizing methodology, two-phase flow, and reactive chemical systems.
• Proficiency with pressure relief sizing software tools.
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information to varied audiences.
• PE license and/or CSP certification is a plus.

Job Overview

Jensen Hughes is seeking a motivated Senior Test Engineer to join the Research, Development, Testing + Evaluation team in the Fire Testing Lab at the global company headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland.  The successful candidate will work independently and in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of professional consultants and engineers to help our clients answer some of the industry’s most challenging fire protection questions. This role will involve the design, execution, and analysis of research and testing programs. Typical projects range from bench-scale to full-scale testing for evaluation of fire protection system efficacy, consequence characterization for industrial processes and energy storage systems, product testing and evaluation, demonstrative testing for litigation support, performance-based comparison of construction materials for use in engineering judgments, numerical model validation, and applied research initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement test plans and protocols for evaluating the fire safety performance of products, including fire suppression systems, detection devices, new construction materials, and other related products.
• Identify and apply specialized test equipment and instrumentation, such as calorimeters, smoke chambers, thermal imaging cameras, and gas analyzers, to accurately measure and record relevant test parameters.
• Oversee the setup, operation, and maintenance of new and existing laboratory facilities and equipment.
• Conduct a wide range of fire safety tests, including but not limited to fire resistance, flame spread, smoke detection, and heat release rate tests, in accordance with applicable industry standards.
• Strategically manage multiple projects concurrently, from inception to completion, ensuring alignment with timelines, budgets, quality standards, and client deliverables.
• Collect, process, and analyze test data using various data processing techniques.
• Communicate research findings, test results, and recommendations clearly and concisely through test reports, technical documentation, and presentations tailored to the needs of our diverse clientele.
• Participate in technical discussions and provide expert guidance on fire safety testing matters to internal stakeholders, partners, and clients.
• Mentor junior lab engineers by demonstrating best practices and facilitating an environment where practical testing skills can be developed.
• Support strategic initiatives related to growing our fire testing capabilities and client base.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
• Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in a client-focused laboratory environment with a proven track record of delivering innovative client-oriented testing solutions, preferably within the fire protection industry. Experience with li-ion battery abuse and fire testing at cell, module, and unit scales is strongly preferred.
• Available to work full time onsite at the test facility in Baltimore, MD, USA (BWI area).
• Knowledge and/or experience with the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus, including hood calorimeters, test furnaces, and other specialized instrumentation.
• Experienced at conducting bench-scale to full-scale fire tests, applying best practices for test documentation, and operating testing equipment and instrumentation.
• Knowledge and/or experience with data collection software, hardware, and instrumentation, including the calibration, installation, and operation of instruments intended for measurement of temperature, heat flux, pressure, gas concentrations, etc.

Job Overview

Jensen Hughes is seeking a Principal CFD Modeling Engineer to serve as a senior technical leader in advanced fire and thermal-fluid modeling. This role is designed for an expert practitioner with deep mastery of the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) who is motivated by solving complex, real-world fire and fluid-flow problems through rigorous, physics-based modeling and experimental validation.

In this role, you will operate at the intersection of advanced computation, fire testing, and applied research, influencing both project outcomes and the evolution of company-wide modeling methodologies. You will be trusted to lead technically challenging work, mentor other engineers, and represent Jensen Hughes as a thought leader with clients and the broader fire science community.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, execution, and refinement of high-fidelity CFD models using FDS for fire dynamics, fluid flow, and heat transfer applications

• Partner closely with experimental testing teams to design test programs, select instrumentation, and produce high-quality validation datasets

• Analyze experimental results and integrate findings into model validation and improvement frameworks

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers, helping shape best practices in CFD modeling and fire science

• Present technical work to clients, industry groups, and at professional conferences

• Author and review technical reports, proposals, and peer-reviewed publications

• Support strategic initiatives related to physics-based modeling, test programs, and methodology development

Requirements and Qualifications

• Graduate degree in engineering with a focus on thermal-fluid sciences

• 15+ years of professional experience applying CFD tools (including FDS) to fire dynamics, heat transfer, and fluid-flow problems across commercial and applied research projects

  • Directly relevant post-graduate research may count for up to five years of this experience

• Deep working knowledge of the FDS Validation Guide, Technical Reference Guide, and User Guide

• Advanced understanding of topics such as: Radiation transport equations, Gas-phase absorption coefficients, Pyrolysis modeling within the FDS framework

• Demonstrated experience using experimental fire test data to validate and refine numerical models

• Knowledge of numerical modeling approaches and their limitations, particularly for large-scale or outdoor fire scenarios

• Proficiency in Python and Fortran or similar scientific programming languages

• Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain complex modeling results to technical and non-technical audiences

• Ability to work independently while also thriving in a collaborative, multidisciplinary technical environment

ETCH is a startup commercializing a radically new and efficient decarbonization technology for the simultaneous greenhouse gas-free production of hydrogen and solid carbon from natural gas.  

The Process Engineer position at ETCH, INC will be focused on development and optimization of our current processes, as well as supporting our scale-up efforts. 

Primary duties include: the optimal design, performance, efficiency, and safety of the processes, while driving continuous improvements and innovations.

Other duties include:

• Develop and implement equipment and strategies for handling both gaseous and solid materials
• Monitor and analyze operational data, identifying opportunities for process optimization to maximize efficiency
• Create process flow diagrams and conduct modeling/simulation of chemical systems
• Test and refine process flow logistics to enhance operational efficiency
• Collaborate with the technical and research teams to design and validate reactor modifications
• Oversee design and development for future and larger-scale systems
• Establish and track performance benchmarks and key performance indicators
• Prevent workplace safety hazards by system recommendations, implementation, and routine inspections

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering or related field

• 10+ years of experience in process engineering,

• Experience in gas processing or solids handling industries, preferably with a focus on thermal carbon black, graphitic carbon, or similar carbon materials production
• Background in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
• Must be able to work safely and follow safety precautions in industrial environments (temperature, humidity, noise, confined spaces, etc.).

• Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects and provide strategic direction
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach
• Experience with process simulation software and statistical analysis tools preferred
• Knowledge of relevant industry standards and environmental regulations
