The Role

We're continuously hiring Engineering Managers as we continue to grow and build new teams. We hire on a pipeline based approach which means your application will be considered across all of our open EM positions. We use the interview process to assess your strengths and we'll match you to a role that best aligns with your experience. You’ll spend your time:

• Taking accountability for delivery across your squad(s), collaborating with the Technical Lead and Product Manager.
• Actively fostering a high bar for engineering excellence within your teams. You’re accountable for the technical outcomes your teams deliver alongside individual engineer performance and growth, so holding a high bar (and clearly articulating your expectations) is key.
• You’ll initially lead a group of around 7-10 engineers (depending on the role) and support, coach and develop them through their career with regular 1:1s and continuous feedback.
• Partner with senior engineers in your area to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for our engineering practices.
• Lead on communication with stakeholders from other teams, creating focus space for engineers to do their best work.
• Collaborate with the wider engineering organisation to contribute to company-wide best managerial and technical practices and standards.

The interview process:

After an initial informal 30 min recruiting call, our interview process involves two main stages:

1. Initial Call Interview (1 hour) You'll meet with one of our Senior Engineering Managers or Engineering Directors. Senior Staff Engineer Responsibilities:

A Senior Staff Engineer at Monzo is a hands on engineering leadership (IC) position. As a Senior Staff Engineer you’ll:

• Partner with Engineering Directors to shape the technical and product direction of a collective, providing leadership across multiple squads (30–70+ engineers) and ensuring alignment with company-wide priorities.
• Be hands on in both coding and architecture, leading from the front.
• Partner closely with Product and Design leadership to define strategy, shape roadmaps, and make high-quality trade-offs that maximise business and customer impact across the collective.
• Mobilise teams across your collective around high-impact problems, creating clarity, alignment and momentum, injecting urgency when needed, or slowing things down to ensure safety and long-term sustainability.
• Lead and influence architectural direction for the most complex systems, ensuring cohesive, scalable designs across multiple teams and aligning local decisions with the broader system strategy.
• Set and uphold a high bar for technical excellence across the collective, driving improvements in quality, reliability and scalability, and fostering a culture where engineers hold each other to that standard.

Your day-to-day   

This role is all about collaborating across disciplines to test hypotheses and make a difference to customers. Together you'll build and support a particular part of Monzo. Our squads belong to our wider collectives (a word we use to describe self-governing business units of ~100 people). They are: Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Platform, Fincrime, Security & Expansion. All of our collectives are doing innovative work, many of which have machine learning and AI at the forefront- from fighting financial crime to building smarter financial tools - and you may have the opportunity to join a collective that gives you direct exposure to this exciting space.
