What you’ll be working on 

We work in cross-functional squads where every data scientist is a member of a central data discipline and fully embedded into one product squad alongside engineers, designers, marketers, product managers etc.

Your day-to-day   

• Applying your expertise in quantitative analysis, data mining, and the presentation of data to see beyond the numbers and understand how our users interact with our products and how those insights can inform our product strategy
• Guide and enable product teams to measure things that matter; initiate or help run A/B experiments to keep improving everything we do
• Drive together with the finance team a unified company-wide understanding of the lifetime value of our users and how different product features are impacting user profitability
• Liaise with engineers to keep making sure we collect the right data to produce relevant business insights

Our Model Oversight team⭐

The second line of defence Model Oversight team (that’s us!) provides support to our colleagues in Borrowing, Fincrime & Fraud, Operations and Finance to help Monzo grow safely. We’re looking for someone (maybe you?) to help ensure the Fincrime/Fraud models we use are not only good for Monzo but what's best for our customers.

🔑You’ll play a key role by...

• Perform independent model validations of FinCrime/Fraud models using proportionate modelling techniques depending on the level of complexity applied.
• Write clear and impactful model validation reports and present the findings in relevant committees. 
• Review of any FinCrime/Fraud model changes and provide recommendations to first line teams to ensure the models remain fit for purpose. 
• Build relationships with first line of defence Fincrime/Fraud modelling teams and wider risk teams to support the embedding of the model risk framework (e.g.  good maintenance of the model inventory and adhering to issue management processes) and an understanding of model validation practices to help Monzo grow safely. 
• Support team lead in reviewing ongoing model performance monitoring to ensure the  FinCrime/Fraud models are performing within risk thresholds and providing support to the  FinCrime/Fraud model development team when further action is required.
• Supporting the broader Model Oversight team with model validation activity in other disciplines (Financial, Operational and Credit) to manage peak demand and utilising areas of specific knowledge.
• Research and learn latest modelling and validation techniques
• Support the effective operation of the Model Risk Oversight Committee as a regular attendee, contributing to the group discussion to improve model risk management.
• Support the promotion and embedding of a strong risk culture, making risk meaningful and relevant to everyone at Monzo. You will share best practice that is easy for everyone to understand.

Our Capital, Impairments & Forecasting team (CIF) sits at the intersection of our Borrowing and Finance collectives, responsible for developing, executing and managing the models used to calculate IFRS 9 ECL, and credit risk capital through the annual ICAAP. We work alongside our first line credit teams who design the products, decide who to lend to, set underwriting policy, identify customers who need help, manage the portfolio and report and measure credit risk.

Within CIF, we are scaling up our Forecasting modelling and execution team to support the rapid growth and evolution of our portfolio. This role is pivotal for the team as the successful candidate will help develop and further enhance our suite of forecasting and stress testing models across both well established and emerging products.  Additionally the successful individual will have a key role in executing these models across high profile budgeting & stress-test exercises and building up our toolkit to quantify the impact of various strategic decisions for senior management.

Strong data and analytical skills are a must, as is experience in credit risk modelling.  Prior experience developing credit risk forecasting models is desirable, but relevant model development / validation experience in IRB modelling, IFRS9 or scorecard models will also be considered. Experience as a ‘model user’ of forecasting models in the context of budgeting or stress-testing would be helpful but is not required.

About the role

The mission of Borrowing ML Scientists is to improve the customer and business outcomes through better automated decisioning, using Machine Learning and Statistical modelling. About our Capital, Impairments & Forecasting Team

Our Capital, Impairments & Forecasting team sits at the intersection of our Borrowing and Finance collectives, responsible for developing, executing and managing the models used to calculate IFRS 9 ECL, and credit risk capital through the annual ICAAP. We work alongside our first line credit teams who design the products, decide who to lend to, set underwriting policy, identify customers who need help, manage the portfolio and report and measure credit risk.

We are scaling up our Impairments modelling team to support the rapid growth and evolution of our portfolio. This role is pivotal for the team as the successful candidate will help develop and further enhance our suite of IFRS 9 models (PD, LGD, EAD, macroeconomic models) across both well established and emerging products.  Additionally the successful individual will have oversight of model performance, construction of PMAs/model overlays where required, model implementation, and impairment analytics for senior management.

Strong data and analytical skills are a must, as is experience in credit risk modelling and IFRS 9 provision methodology.  Prior experience developing IFRS 9 models is desirable, but model development experience in IRB modelling, stress testing or scorecard models will also be considered.

• Acting as a key point of contact for cross-functional teams, ensuring stakeholders understand methodologies, assumptions, outputs and implications for the business.
• Helping design and enhance stress testing methodologies and frameworks, including data processes, scenario translation and model parameterisation.
• Designing and improving stress testing processes, ensuring they are scalable, controlled and repeatable.
• Building strong relationships across FP&A, Treasury, Borrowing, Credit Risk, Data, Product and other teams, facilitating smooth data flows and clear expectations.
• Producing high-quality written materials that explain complex analysis clearly for diverse and senior audiences — including memos, committee papers and technical documentation.
• Identifying opportunities for process improvement, automation and better controls, supporting the wider Financial Risk team’s development.
• Supporting the development and embedding of tools, models and templates used across stress testing and financial risk.

🤩 We’d love to hear from you if you…

• Have experience working in financial risk, credit risk, prudential regulation, finance, analytics or another analytically focused financial services role.
• Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and enjoy working with models, scenarios, and financial data.
• Are confident presenting technical or complex analysis to senior stakeholders, and influencing outcomes with clarity and structure.
• Understand financial statements, capital metrics and risk drivers within a bank, or are keen to deepen your expertise in these areas.
• Are experienced in navigating cross-functional environments and building trusted relationships across levels and disciplines.
• Can translate complex information into simple, compelling messages for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Are comfortable working independently, managing shifting priorities, and taking ownership for the quality of your work.
• Have a data-driven mindset and enjoy finding smarter, more scalable ways to deliver analysis (SQL or coding experience is a bonus).
