We are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer for our Embedded team with a user focused mindset and strong technical background. Our embedded team is the essential component that ties software, hardware and electronics together that pushes the limits of 3D printing. They are responsible for designing and implementing our firmware. 

**This is a Hybrid role which requires weekly presence in our Budapest office.

The Job:

• Design, build, test, and ship development tools and prototype code for your fellow R&D engineers working on new, unlaunched Formlabs products. 
• Design, build, test and ship code for new printer features to the tens of thousands of Formlabs devices in the field
• Ensure code re-use with a strong focus on maintainability, testing and CI
• Collaborate with different stakeholders (product managers, designers) to ensure we build the right features for our customers, existing and future. 

You:

• Have written code that lives on hardware products 
• Program with modern languages used for embedded software stacks, ideally in C++, and/or Python
• Easily implement common embedded software architecture patterns for things like filtering, control loops, and remote procedure calls
• Are willing to take initiative and learn from failures
• Distill complex things simply when communicating with non-software stakeholders.

About You

The Tulip Embedded team focuses on development of the Tulip OS, maintaining and supporting bootloader, kernel, and userspace development for Tulip Hardware (Edge MC, Edge IO) and beyond. In this role, you will also work alongside product management and customers to identify key features, product performance, and contribute to strategic planning.

• Built large embedded (Linux) products in past roles (specifically user-facing products).
• Worked or designed connected edge/cloud environments and architected systems.
• Worked independently on problems and learned in the process.
• Collaborated on an interdisciplinary and diverse team.
• Partnered with Product and Design teams to help scope work.

What skills do I need?

• 6+ years of experience building embedded products used daily by customers
• Experience with a systems language (C, C++, Rust)
• Experience in an OS build system (Yocto, Buildroot, Android)
• Experience with shell scripting and command line environments
• Familiarity with an interpreted language (e.g., JavaScript, Python)
• Familiarity with common hardware buses and devices (e.g., I2C, SPI, PCIe)
• Working understanding of fundamental web and networking concepts, including HTTP, DNS, TCP/IP, SSL/TLS, sockets, proxy servers
• Experience in designing and implementing RESTful APIs over a microservice architecture (bonus)
• Experience with Redux, Node.js, Go, Electron, MongoDB, Postgres, WebSockets (bonus)
• Experience as a team lead or technical lead for a software team (bonus)
• Bias for action and impact

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain the Tulip Operating System (e.g., building, packaging, and supporting the OS)
• Configure and maintain routing, networking, and device configurations
• Maintain and add bootloader, kernel patches, and device trees on Tulip hardware
• Port the Tulip OS to other hardware targets
• Maintain and support OS toolchain and versioning
• Debug and resolve customer issues with support staff and technical teams
• Support security-related tooling for engineering firmware releases and release process
