POSITION SUMMARY: The Engine Service Tech 2 - Truck Shop troubleshoots mechanical problems in Caterpillar and allied products. With minimal supervision, the Engine Service Technician 2 - Truck Shop performs duties as assigned by management in the repair, maintenance and/or rebuilding of equipment in the service shop or field, in a safe, efficient and capable manner in the least amount of labor hours necessary and without re-work. Besides performing mechanical repair as directed, the Engine Service Technician 2 - Truck Shop also estimates work orders and prepares written quotes for submission to the Lead Person and/or Service Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Troubleshoots all Caterpillar and related systems.
2. Uses all test and diagnostic equipment available to make adjustments to truck engines and systems.
3. Makes warranty recommendations.
4. Performs minor welding, fabrication, plumbing alignment and D.C. electric repairs.
5. Guides/supervises lower-level technicians in the repairs of trucks, Caterpillar and allied engines.
6. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

1. Must have a valid Class C Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
2. Must have a valid California Class “B” driver’s license, if assigned vehicle requires.
3. Three to seven (3 to 7) years of experience in the repair of on-highway trucks and buses.
4. Expertise in all phases of on-highway truck service operation.
5. Full and positive knowledge of the Caterpillar product line and allied products.
6. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or can provide verification of all formal classroom study or hands on experience related to equipment repairs.
7. Furnish all hand tools required to repair, test and diagnose hydraulic, air, power train, electrical, and electronic systems on all makes of trucks and Caterpillar engines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

11. Hearing: Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication via telecommunications and in person.
12. Sitting: Sits in equipment and vehicles.
13. Lying: Lies in prone position under vehicles and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Perform all requirements found in Caterpillar Engine Operation & Maintenance Manual.
2. Perform new and used equipment start-up for delivery to end-user.
3. Perform Caterpillar updates as directed by Caterpillar.
4. Remove, install, re-condition and repair engines and make necessary adjustments on the engine as well as to the components in the various systems.
5. Perform diagnostic tests on engines.
6. Troubleshoot all Caterpillar and allied product systems.
7. Disassemble, clean and reassemble all Caterpillar and allied product machines.
8. Use all test and diagnostic equipment available to make adjustments to engines.
9. Make warranty recommendations and reports in representation of a CAT product.
10. Measure and identify parts and components for reusability or replacement and ordering new parts as required.
11. Perform minor welding and fabrication.
12. This position requires work to be completed within 110% of any Flat Rate times that are established as targets by HPS.
13. Rework must not exceed 0.5% of labor hours.
14. Performs other duties as directed by foreman or service manager.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Prefer to have one of the following:
3. Successful completion of apprenticeship program.
4. Graduation from an accredited technical school with emphasis on diesel engine.
5. Two years of experience with hands on mechanical repair on diesel engine.
