What You’ll Do

• Design, develop and evolve our cloud-based messaging systems with a focus on scaling and automation
• Take ownership of the Confluent Kafka deployment - pro-actively identify bottlenecks, improve configurations and work with other engineering teams to tune applications
• Design, develop and test backup and disaster recovery processes to ensure they are robust and reproducible
• Build scalable, robust solutions for complex technical challenges, ensuring infrastructure design aligns with best practices and long-term platform goals.
• Promote engineering excellence and contribute to team knowledge sharing and process improvements.

Who You Are

• 3+ years of hands-on experience building and managing kafka deployments, experience with Confluent kafka is a plus.
• Solid experience in AWS-based infrastructure (EC2, VPC, IAM, RDS, KMS, etc.).
• Expertise in Docker, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
• (Nice to have) Experience with other messaging solutions
• Proven experience deploying, maintaining, and scaling critical cloud infrastructure components in production environments.

You will work on highly available, low-latency and financially critical back-end services that handle order flow, market data, risk, balances, assets and exposure management at scale. You will collaborate closely with product, quantitative, risk and trading stakeholders to deliver resilient, high-performance systems that form the backbone of our trading platform.

You Mission

As a Software Engineer in the Financial Crime Prevention (FCP) team at Bitpanda, you will build the systems that keep Bitpanda safe, secure, and compliant at scale. You’ll work on high-throughput, low-latency services that detect, prevent, and respond to suspicious activity across payments, trading, and user accounts. Your work will directly impact the integrity of our platform and protect millions of users from financial crime, fraud, and compliance risk.

What you'll do

• Design and operate scalable, event-driven backend services using Java 25, Micronaut/Spring, and Kafka to power real-time detection and prevention workflows
• Build and maintain core FCP systems, including transaction monitoring, risk scoring, alerting, and reporting pipelines
• Ensure production-grade reliability with ≥80% unit test coverage, integration and end-to-end tests, and leverage AI-assisted code review tools like Claude Code
• Integrate with internal and external systems, including payment providers, trading services, and compliance tools, handling edge cases and high-throughput data streams
• Continuously improve system performance, observability, and scalability while meeting strict compliance and regulatory requirements

Who you are
