About this Web Content Strategy Intern role at Interactive Strategies

Interactive Strategies · Onsite · Washington, District of Columbia, United States

About the Role

Interactive Strategies is looking for a curious, organized, detail-oriented Web Content Strategy Intern to support our team on digital projects for mission-driven organizations. We're a full-service digital agency based in Washington, DC, known for our work with leading nonprofits, including Special Olympics, American Kidney Fund, Rainforest Trust, and the American Lung Association.

You don’t need to come in knowing how to build a content strategy—we’ll teach you. We’re looking for someone who asks thoughtful questions, enjoys making sense of complex information, and is eager to learn how websites are planned, written, and built. You’ll gain practical experience on real digital projects while strengthening your skills in research, writing, content organization, analysis, collaboration, presenting your thinking, and receiving and incorporating feedback. You’ll also see firsthand how content strategy works alongside UX, design, development, strategy, and project management within a digital agency.

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in website content strategy, digital communications, UX, writing and editing, SEO and search optimization, and/or nonprofit communications. Our internship program is designed to help early-career professionals build meaningful experience, explore potential career paths, and develop skills they can carry into future roles—whether at Interactive Strategies or elsewhere.

  • Duration: 16–20 weeks, roughly aligned with the fall semester.
  • Schedule: Part-time; anticipated 15–20 hours per week, with flexibility around academic commitments. Flexible on start date.
  • Location: Remote or DC-based, with preference for students from local universities.
  • Compensation: $18.40 per hour.

What You’ll Do

  • Support website content audits and inventories, helping identify outdated, redundant, missing, or underperforming content and turn findings into recommendations
  • Draft and edit web content using audience insights, search and performance data, content strategy, and brand guidelines
  • Help map and structure content for modular, component-based websites, considering how copy, UX, design, and functionality work together
  • Enter, organize, and track content in content management and workflow systems, maintaining the documentation and resources that keep complex website projects moving
  • Help prepare research, findings, examples, and materials for client presentations and workshops
  • Participate in internal project meetings and collaborate with content strategists, UX and visual designers, developers, project managers, and clients
  • With guidance from a senior content strategist, take ownership of a small content strategy assignment or recommendation from research through final deliverable

What You’ll Learn

By the end of the internship, you’ll have a stronger understanding of:

  • How content strategy fits into the website redesign process, from research and planning through production, QA, and launch
  • How strategists evaluate existing content, interpret research and data, and turn findings into actionable recommendations
  • How audience needs, organizational goals, UX, brand, accessibility, analytics, and search behavior influence content decisions
  • How to write and structure clear, engaging, action-oriented content for modular, component-based websites
  • How large volumes of content are organized, managed, reviewed, and moved through complex digital projects
  • How multidisciplinary agency teams work together and how to communicate the thinking behind a content recommendation

Requirements

You might be a good fit if you:

  • Are a strong writer, editor, researcher, and communicator
  • Are organized and comfortable working with detailed information
  • Enjoy figuring out how information should be structured, simplified, and presented
  • Ask thoughtful questions and are eager to learn new tools, systems, and processes
  • Can manage multiple small assignments, meet deadlines, and communicate when you need help or clarification
  • Are seeking or have recently obtained a degree related to websites, UX, content strategy, digital communications, nonprofit communications, writing, editing, or related fields

Experience with content management systems, analytics, SEO tools, website projects, or digital communications is welcome but not required. We care more about curiosity, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.

Benefits

  • Growth & Mentorship: You’ll work closely with experienced content strategists who will provide guidance, feedback, and opportunities to take on increasing responsibility throughout the internship.
  • Professional Development: Build experience across web content strategy, research, writing and editing, SEO and search optimization, content organization, and digital production. You’ll also gain exposure to agency workflows, client collaboration, brand and style standards, and content management systems.
  • Team Connection: Join a collaborative, mission-driven team that makes time for connection, whether through virtual events, team meetings, or in-person gatherings.
  • Office Perks for DC-Based Team Members: Enjoy a fully stocked kitchen, team lunches, and access to our on-site gym when working from the office.
