Overview

Black Canyon Consulting (BCC) is seeking a Senior Technical Communications and Content Specialist to support the ClinicalTrials.gov program at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

This role is ideal for a versatile communications professional who combines strong technical writing and editing skills with the ability to coordinate across multiple teams, manage content review workflows, and ensure consistency across a wide range of communication products. The successful candidate will help develop and maintain high-quality content that supports ClinicalTrials.gov users, program operations, and regulatory requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop, edit, and maintain website content, user guides, FAQs, training materials, policies, and other program documentation.
  • Review content for clarity, accuracy, consistency, usability, and alignment with plain language principles.
  • Ensure consistency in messaging, terminology, style, and formatting across multiple content channels and products.
  • Translate complex technical, scientific, and regulatory information into clear, audience-appropriate communications.
  • Coordinate content reviews and approvals among subject matter experts, technical teams, customer support staff, and leadership.
  • Create and manage Jira tickets and track content-related action items to support publication and review workflows.
  • Contribute to style guides, editorial standards, templates, and content governance processes.
  • Develop and maintain a content maintenance plan and review schedule to help ensure website content, documentation, training materials, and related resources remain accurate, current, and aligned with program needs.
  • Maintain documentation of content review processes, editorial workflows, governance practices, and content standards used across teams to promote consistency, transparency, and efficient content management.
  • Collaborate with software developers and program stakeholders to ensure documentation accurately reflects system functionality, policies, and program requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve content quality, user experience, and communication effectiveness.

Required skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Technical Writing, English, Journalism, Public Health, Information Science, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience developing and editing technical documentation, web content, instructional materials, or other complex written products.
  • Exceptional technical writing, copyediting, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into clear, concise, user-focused content.
  • Experience coordinating reviews and collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and proactively drive assignments to completion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Local candidate preferred who is able to work in a collaborative hybrid environment
  • Experience supporting federal, scientific, healthcare, clinical research, or regulated programs.
  • Familiarity with ClinicalTrials.gov, PRS, clinical research, or biomedical information systems.
  • Knowledge of content governance, style guide development, and editorial workflows.
  • Familiarity with FDAAA 801, NIH clinical trial policies, or similar regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, SharePoint, Microsoft 365, Adobe Acrobat, Google Analytics, Qualtrics, or similar tools.
  • Experience with plain language writing and digital content best practices.

Writing and editing samples may be requested during the interview process.
