Structural Steel Shop Lead

Job Type: Contract-to-Hire
Starting Pay: From $30.00 per hour
Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced Structural Steel Shop Lead to oversee daily fabrication activities in a structural steel manufacturing environment. This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for coordinating shop operations, supporting production schedules, and providing guidance to welders and fitters while promoting quality, safety, and efficiency.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in structural steel fabrication, enjoys leading production teams, and can effectively manage workflow in a fast-paced shop.
Key Responsibilities
Production Leadership
- Coordinate daily fabrication activities to support production schedules and delivery commitments.
- Lead welders, fitters, and fabrication personnel throughout each shift.
- Assign work based on production priorities and available resources.
- Monitor workflow and adjust assignments to maintain productivity.
- Communicate production updates, schedule changes, and operational concerns to shop leadership.
- Provide technical guidance for fit-up, layout, welding, and blueprint interpretation.
- Troubleshoot fabrication challenges and help resolve production issues.
- Work with maintenance personnel to minimize equipment downtime and support continuous operations.
- Assist with additional shop leadership responsibilities as needed.
- Reinforce established safety procedures and manufacturing standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Partner with Quality Control to verify completed work meets required specifications.
- Assist with inspections, dimensional verification, and production documentation.
- Support onboarding, training, and ongoing development of fabrication team members.
