About the role: What's in the Box

You will contribute to the success of the Food Systems Alliance by providing technical leadership across multiple engineering teams and business domains. At a pivotal stage in our transition from bespoke operational tooling to globally scalable software products, you will help shape architecture, drive technical decision-making, and translate complex supply chain processes into robust, maintainable systems.

Working closely with engineers and operational stakeholders, you will influence technical direction, promote engineering best practices, and support the delivery of scalable solutions that power HelloFresh's global supply chain operations.

What you’ll do: The Recipe

At HelloFresh we are moving away from a model where software developers just execute tickets toward one where product engineers are trusted to own customer problems. A Product Engineer takes a problem, forms a point of view, validates it with customers and data, and ships it using AI as a force multiplier. 

• Lead cross-squad technical initiatives to design and build modular, globally scalable backend solutions for complex supply chain operations.
• Act as the technical bridge between engineering squads and operational stakeholders (Procurement, Production, Data) to architect reliable, long-term systems.
• Define and drive engineering best practices around system design, code quality, and maintainability across the entire Food Systems Alliance.
• Optimize complex data workflows and event-driven architectures to seamlessly support day-to-day production and scaling needs.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing across engineering teams
• Shape the technical roadmap by proactively identifying architectural bottlenecks and proposing strategic improvements.
• Take the technical lead on backend-heavy product problems, designing, building and operating the services and systems needed to deliver them reliably at scale.
• Work beyond your specialization when the problem demands it. Your specialization is your anchor, not your boundary.
• Operate what you build. You instrument, monitor, and improve your systems in production. Shipping is the beginning of the learning cycle, not the end.

What you’ll bring: The Ingredients 

• Hands-on experience working with AI tooling (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) beyond casual experimentation. You use AI agents every day. You have a practical sense of how the context you provide to AI tools shapes output quality, and how to set boundaries on AI-generated work.
• Extensive backend engineering expertise, ideally within JVM-based ecosystems (Kotlin or Java), coupled with a strong grasp of distributed systems and microservices architecture.
• A proven track record of designing and operating highly scalable, event-driven systems using messaging technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or SQS.
• Strong ability to work fluidly across team boundaries, translating complex business or operational requirements into actionable technical roadmaps.
• Solid understanding of modern cloud infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes) and observability practices, with the capacity to establish and advocate for tribe-wide standards.
• Strong fluency in  Kotlin or Java and hands on experience building distributed systems in production: event-driven and asynchronous flows, clear service contracts, and designing for partial failure. You operate what you build, including its observability and data layer.
• A collaborative, low-ego approach to problem-solving, possessing strong technical judgment and a passion for mentoring fellow engineers.
• You take full ownership. You have a bias to ship. You finish the last twenty percent. 
• You have product sense and are opinionated about what should be built and why, and you can back that opinion with data and user evidence.
