Your role and responsibilities

Join ABB's Process Control Platform team and contribute to the technology that powers critical industrial automation solutions worldwide. You will become part of a highly experienced and collaborative team where knowledge sharing, innovation, and team success are at the heart of everything we do.

You will contribute to the development of ABB’s next-generation process control platform, with a focus on embedded software for reliable, secure, and safety-critical industrial controllers.

This is an opportunity to work with advanced embedded software development, industrial communication technologies, and safety-critical systems in a modern and technically stimulating environment.

The location for this position is Västerås, Sweden, with a hybrid work model.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software in modern C++ for industrial automation platforms.

  • Work with real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as QNX and VxWorks.

  • Contribute to software architecture, design discussions, code reviews, and technical decisions.

  • Develop and optimize multithread applications.

  • Use industrial communication technologies such as OPC UA, PROFINET, PROFIsafe, and similar protocols.

  • Design safety-certified and cybersecurity-focused products, including secure communication and secure boot technologies.

  • Collaborate closely with software, hardware, quality, and product teams to deliver reliable and high-performing solutions.

Qualifications for the role

To succeed in this role, you are an experienced software engineer with a strong technical foundation and a passion for solving complex engineering challenges.

You have:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related field, combined with strong proficiency in modern C++ development.

  • Experience in working with embedded systems, RTOS environments.

  • Experience with networking technologies and industrial communication protocols is considered a plus.

  • Knowledge of distributed control systems (DCS), IEC 61131-3, or ABB AC 800M products is considered an advantage, as is experience from safety-related or safety-certified product development, preferably according to IEC 61508 and SIL2/SIL3.

  • Experience with software quality practices including unit testing, functional testing and static code analysis.

  • Familiarity with Linux environments and containers are meritorious.

  • Fluency in both English and Swedish, written and spoken.
