This is a critical role for assuring the safety of our Civil Large products, with the team playing a central role in influencing Red Top and SAR strategies, conducting numerical risk assessments and performing safety analysis for in-service products and new product designs.

As Capability Manager, you will be accountable for the delivery of the team’s inputs to the product safety process, while developing the people and technical capability across the Safety Centre. Working with the Chief Engineering Leadership, Design Safety function and Business Aviation S&R Team, you will also influence safety strategy, methods and ways of working across Civil.

What you will be doing:

  • Providing technical leadership for the team’s contribution to Red Tops and SARs, ensuring robust and proportionate safety assessments that influence engineering decisions.

  • Managing the team’s workflow in a dynamic environment, delivering high-quality safety outputs while maintaining commitments to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ensuring the capability and capacity of the team meets current and future requirements and budget.

  • Working collaboratively with the Safety Centre, Chief Engineer and Design Safety leadership teams to ensure a consistent approach to product safety and improve safety methods, tools and ways of working across Civil.

  • Influencing the safety approach for future Civil products and technologies, such as UltraFan.

  • Building an engaged and high-performing team by developing and strengthening capability across the Safety Centre, ensuring our people have the skills and opportunities to succeed.

  • Leading and driving efficiency through continuous improvement, embracing digital technologies, AI and innovative ways of working to enhance product safety and engineering productivity.

Position Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, Physics or a related field.

  • Demonstrable strong technical leadership and engineering judgement.

  • Experience of building and leading high-performing teams that collaborate effectively across a broad range of engineering disciplines and stakeholders.

  • Ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking to solve complex technical problems.

  • Ability to lead through ambiguity, balancing technical judgement with business priorities.

  • Sound technical knowledge of Civil Large products and Company Safety policies and processes.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience of applying continuous improvement techniques to drive engineering excellence.

  • Experience of developing technical and people capability within an engineering environment.

  • Knowledge and experience of product safety activities across in-service and/or New Product Introduction (NPI).

  • An interest in applying digital technologies, AI and innovative ways of working to improve engineering productivity and product safety.
