The Opportunity

This position works out of our Plano, TX location in the Neuromodulation division. Abbott Neuromodulation is advancing next-generation therapies for chronic pain, movement disorders, and other neurological conditions through innovative bioelectronic medicine, digital health technologies, and intelligent neuromodulation systems. We are seeking a Research Scientist II with strong molecular biology, cellular neuroscience, tissue engineering, or related life sciences expertise and an AI-first mindset to support translational research at the intersection of biology, neural systems, and implantable medical devices.

This role will contribute to the discovery and development of biological, digital, and multimodal biomarkers that may inform future adaptive (closed-loop) neuromodulation therapies. The successful candidate will help generate high-quality biological datasets, investigate mechanisms of neural modulation, and support the integration of molecular, electrophysiological, imaging, and clinical data to enable more personalized, data-driven treatment approaches.

The individual will collaborate with internal R&D teams and external academic, clinical, and industry partners globally to accelerate scientific innovation and translational research initiatives.

What You’ll Work On

Translational Neuroscience & Biological Research

  • Support preclinical and translational neuroscience research programs focused on neuromodulation mechanisms, therapeutic target discovery, and biomarker identification.
  • Design, execute, and optimize molecular and cellular biology experiments.
  • Conduct cellular, tissue-level, and in-vitro studies to investigate biological responses to neural stimulation.
  • Analyze gene, protein, and cellular pathway changes associated with neural activity, disease states, and therapeutic outcomes.
  • Support development of novel in-vitro screening platforms and biologically relevant research models.
  • Assist in translating biological discoveries into clinically relevant neuromodulation applications.

Biomarker Discovery & Adaptive Neurotechnology

  • Contribute to discovery and validation of molecular, physiological, and digital biomarkers associated with therapeutic response.
  • Support development of biological inputs that may inform future adaptive (closed-loop) neuromodulation systems.
  • Assist in correlating molecular findings with electrophysiological, imaging, device-generated, and clinical datasets.
  • Participate in research efforts exploring mechanisms underlying personalized neuromodulation therapies.

AI, Data Science & Multimodal Research

  • Apply an AI-first approach to experimental design, data generation, annotation, structuring, and interpretation.
  • Contribute to development of AI-ready multimodal datasets integrating biological, electrophysiological, imaging, and clinical data.
  • Partner with computational scientists, data scientists, and engineers to support machine learning and advanced analytics initiatives.
  • Maintain high-quality, well-characterized datasets suitable for downstream AI and predictive modeling applications.
  • Support generation of data standards, metadata frameworks, and research workflows that enhance reproducibility and future analytics capabilities.

Collaboration & Scientific Communication

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across R&D, Clinical, Regulatory, Data Science, and Engineering organizations.
  • Engage with academic institutions, clinical investigators, and external research collaborators globally.
  • Prepare technical reports, scientific presentations, publications, and supporting documentation.
  • Present findings to internal stakeholders and external scientific audiences as appropriate.
  • Stay current on advances in neuroscience, AI-enabled biology, bioelectronic medicine, precision medicine, and adaptive neurotechnology.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree (MSc) in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Cellular Biology, Bioengineering, or related field.
  • 1–3 years of relevant laboratory or translational research experience following degree completion.
  • Hands-on experience in several of the following areas:
    • RNA/DNA extraction, processing, and analysis
    • Gene expression analysis
    • Protein characterization and biochemical assays
    • Mammalian cell culture
    • Cellular neuroscience techniques
    • In-vitro assay development
    • Electrophysiology or neural recording methods
  • Strong experimental design, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Interest in AI-enabled, data-driven scientific research approaches.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and matrixed environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Cellular Biology, or related discipline.
  • Research experience in neuroscience, neurobiology, neuroengineering, or translational medicine.
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following:
    • Transcriptomics
    • Proteomics
    • Single-cell analysis
    • Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
    • Advanced microscopy and imaging techniques
    • Preclinical CNS models
    • Microfluidics
    • Biomaterials
    • Bio-MEMS technologies
    • Tissue engineering
  • Exposure to neuromodulation, neurostimulation, bioelectronic medicine, neural interfaces, or implantable medical devices.
  • Experience working with multimodal datasets that combine biological, neural, imaging, and/or clinical information.
  • Working knowledge of Python, R, MATLAB, or equivalent scientific computing environments.
  • Familiarity with machine learning workflows, data annotation methodologies, or AI-enabled research tools.
  • Record of scientific publications, conference presentations, or collaborative research activities.
  • Experience working with external academic, clinical, or industry research partners.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, scientific curiosity, and ability to thrive in a rapidly evolving research environment.

The base pay for this position is
