Xcel Energy is seeking a Data Analyst Intern to support the Electric Distribution System Performance (EDSP) team, located in Colorado. This paid internship provides an opportunity to apply data analytics skills to real-world utility operations, specifically focused on distribution system performance, reliability, and reporting. The intern will work alongside engineers and analysts supporting EDSP initiatives, including analysis of outage data, reliability metrics, and asset/system performance. The role offers hands-on experience transforming large datasets into actionable insights that support operational decision-making and continuous improvement efforts. Through collaboration with cross-functional partners (engineering, operations, and data teams), the intern will gain exposure to how analytics supports safe, reliable, and efficient electric distribution service. This position will also provide opportunities for professional development, mentorship, and presentation of results to internal stakeholders.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
• Analyze distribution system performance data (e.g., outages, reliability metrics, asset performance) to identify trends and insights
• Develop and maintain dashboards and reports using Excel, Power BI and Databricks
• Support data validation, cleansing, and preparation across multiple data sources
• Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to support data-driven decision-making
• Perform ad-hoc analysis and reporting to support EDSP initiatives
• Document analytical methods and present findings to team members
This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements:
- Current student, Sophomore or higher (as of Fall 20270
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field.
- Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
- Able to commute to the Lipan Distribution Center (LDC) at 1123 W 3rd Ave in Denver.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, data analysis, visualization)
• Familiarity with Power BI or similar data visualization tools
• Basic knowledge of SQL, Python, or other data analytics tools
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Interest in electric utility operations, infrastructure, or energy industry
• Enrolled in an accredited college or university OR a community college with plans to transfer to a four-year university, pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field.
