We have an opportunity for a Platform Owner to join our Cards API team in Technology and be responsible for the Cards and Merchants APIs. 

As part of the Cards & Merchants domain, you'll help ensure millions of customer and merchant transactions remain fast, secure, and reliable while contributing to the modernisation of BNZ's core payments technology. This domain spans end-to-end card and merchant capabilities, including transaction processing, card issuing, merchant services, compliance, integration and APIs, and data insights. In this role, you'll lead the Integration & API Services capability, enabling seamless connectivity across BNZ's card, merchant, and partner ecosystems through modern APIs and event-driven services.

What are 5 day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?

  • Platform Roadmaps: Define and communicate a clear platform vision and strategy aligned with BNZ’s strategic goals, driving the platform team towards operational excellence. 
  • People Leadership: Lead roles such as business analysts and technical specialists through all employee lifecycle stages—attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, retention, and offboarding. Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability to drive performance and alignment with business goals. 
  • Service Ownership: Own the performance, reliability, and continuous improvement of software services through proactive monitoring and metrics. Ensure platform stability, scalability, security, and compliance with BNZ DevOps and SDLC standards.
  • Prioritization: Prioritize platform enhancements based on customer value, business impact, and resources, ensuring application management aligns with the Critical Hygiene Framework.
  • Risk Management: Mitigate technology risks to ensure security, compliance, and resilience. Resolve incidents to meet recovery SLAs, conduct post-incident reviews, and prioritize actions to improve availability.

There is a need for us to uplift our API capability, which creates a large opportunity to form up exciting roadmaps, strategies and resource plans to be able to supply and support APIs and subsequently uplift the capability of BNZ cards platforms.

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?

This role offers the chance to drive the development of robust, scalable API solutions that deliver sustainable business outcomes. You will support and develop your team while balancing your focus on maximising the value delivered by the platform team, ensuring alignment with customer needs, stakeholder expectations, and BNZ’s strategic goals.

What will success look like for the candidate in this role?

Success in this role will be demonstrated by effectively driving the Cards API strategy towards operational excellence, ensuring alignment with customer needs, stakeholder expectations, and BNZ’s strategic goals. The candidate will also be successful in promoting a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability, and ensuring platform stability, scalability, security, and compliance.

What technical skills / skills are required for this role?

This role requires experience across modern delivery, integration, cloud, and engineering platforms, including Jira, Confluence, Kong, Kafka, MQ, Spring Boot, Bitbucket, Jenkins, Spinnaker, AWS, Azure, OpenShift, Dynatrace, and Splunk. We are also looking for strong people leadership skills, knowledge of software development and API architecture, backlog management expertise, data-driven decision making, and experience working in agile environments.

What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?

We are looking for someone experienced with effectively engaging with multiple stakeholders. You will also bring:

  • Teamwork: Working collaboratively with others towards a common goal. 
  • Communication: The ability to clearly convey and understand information, both written and verbal.
