Job Summary

Lumentum d.o.o. – Optična vlakna is looking for an early-career engineer or applied physicist to help develop a new optical manufacturing technology for high-precision fiber assemblies.

The role combines laser optics, interaction of laser radiation with glass, modelling, software and hands-on experimental work. You will develop and validate the process, design and align optical setups, and work with equipment and manufacturing engineers to turn the results into a stable and repeatable production capability.

This is genuine development work. The process, models and equipment requirements will be shaped through careful analysis and experiment. You will work with experienced engineers while developing your own technical judgment and taking increasing ownership of the technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply optics and photonics knowledge to the development and validation of laser-based processes for glass and optical-fiber assemblies.
  • Design, build, align and characterize free-space optical setups.
  • Define and control critical beam and process parameters, including focus, spot size, beam shape, power density, timing and stability.
  • Plan experiments that answer clear technical questions and reduce the main development risks.
  • Develop analytical or numerical models and compare their predictions with measured results.
  • Establish suitable measurement methods, process windows and acceptance criteria.
  • Review test data, investigate anomalies and identify the physical causes of variation or failure.
  • Work with equipment engineers to define positioning, sensing, control and automation requirements.
  • Support the transfer of the process from laboratory development into manufacturing.
  • Document requirements, models, test results and technical decisions clearly.

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong foundations in optics, physics or engineering, with the ability to apply them to real hardware.
  • Hands-on experience with optical setups, lasers, measurement systems or other experimental equipment.
  • The ability to make sensible estimates, identify the important variables, design useful experiments and judge whether a result is credible.
  • Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, C++, C# or a similar engineering environment.
  • The ability to make sound technical decisions with incomplete information and refine them as new evidence becomes available.
  • Clear communication and the ability to work across physics, mechanical engineering, automation and manufacturing.

Suitable backgrounds include physics, photonics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science and related fields. We welcome exceptional graduates and early-career engineers. University laboratory work, student projects, internships, research, technical competitions and serious personal projects all count as relevant experience.

Additional Experience We Value

Experience with laser-beam characterization, optical design, optical fibers, glass processing, thermal or multiphysics modelling, optical measurement, instrument control or laboratory automation would be useful.

Evidence of Technical Ability

With your application, please include one example of work that shows how you approach a difficult technical problem. It may come from your studies, previous employment, an internship, a competition or a personal project.

Tell us what the problem was, what you personally contributed, the physics or engineering behind your approach and how you verified the result. Links to code, reports, photographs or test data are welcome. We will discuss this work with you during the technical interview.

What You Can Expect From Us

You will work on a core development problem with direct access to experienced engineers, laboratory equipment and manufacturing feedback. As your understanding grows, so will your ownership of the technology. We also offer a competitive compensation package, including base salary, performance bonus, equity participation and a broad range of employee benefits.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company.

We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment.

Please contact us to request accommodation.
