Since its founding in 2010, Challenge Preparatory Charter School (Challenge Prep) has provided students and families with a successful academic program in Far Rockaway, Queens. We currently serve over 1200 scholars from Kindergarten to 12th grade across 3 sites. Our school’s mission is to prepare students from the greater Far Rockaway community to excel academically, to demonstrate mastery of the NY State Learning Standards, and to achieve their career aspirations. Challenge cultivates and supports the intellectual, aesthetic, social, emotional, and ethical development of its students and prepares them to be responsible 21st century citizens. To accomplish its mission, Challenge offers a rigorous instructional program in a safe, supportive, technology-infused and data-enriched and social-emotional learning sequence, authentic field experiences, career counseling, and college coursework.  It is understood that we are one organization with multiple sites, and it is expected that all members of the team collaborate to support all of our scholars.

 

Understanding the Role

The Financial Literacy Teacher will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging, practical, and culturally responsive financial education to students in grades 6–8. The ideal candidate is passionate about helping young people develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to make informed financial decisions and successfully navigate college, careers, and adulthood.

The teacher will create a classroom environment where students can connect financial concepts to their everyday lives and future goals. Instruction will emphasize real-world application, including budgeting, saving, banking, credit, investing, taxes, insurance, student loans, entrepreneurship, and long-term financial planning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Your job duties and responsibilities include providing instruction about money, budgeting, personal finance, savings, credit, banking, and related financial topics. A Middle School Financial Teacher may also support age-appropriate research and projects. Develop daily lessons aligned with the CPCS curriculum in collaboration with leadership team members. The Financial Teacher instructs students on the basics of money and how financial systems work, including how to make responsible choices with limited resources. They show students the right ways to examine financial information, including how materials of the budget (income and expenses) interact and how financial decisions connect to real-world outcomes. Teach middle school level financial literacy and lab/class activities using lectures, technology, and hands-on learning experiences.
  • Job Responsilibilities
  • Develop and teach engaging financial literacy lessons for students in grades 6–8, adapting instruction to different developmental and academic levels.

  • Teach foundational and advanced concepts including:

  • Budgeting, saving, and spending

  • Banking and financial services

  • Credit, credit scores, and responsible borrowing

  • Investing and wealth building

  • Taxes, insurance, and consumer protection

  • Student loans and college affordability

  • Career planning, income, and workplace benefits

  • Entrepreneurship and business fundamentals

  • Financial goal-setting and long-term planning

  • Design authentic, project-based learning experiences that connect classroom concepts to real-world financial decisions.

  • Incorporate technology, simulations, case studies, current events, and relevant financial tools into instruction.

  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with varying academic abilities and learning needs.

  • Establish a positive, inclusive, and academically rigorous classroom culture.

  • Assess student learning through projects, presentations, written assignments, quizzes, and other formative and summative assessments.

  • Use student data to monitor progress and adjust instruction.

  • Collaborate with colleagues, school leadership, counselors, and families to support students' academic and postsecondary goals.

  • Help students understand the financial implications of college, career, and postsecondary pathways.

  • Participate in school-wide events, professional development, staff meetings, and other community-building activities.

  • Serve as a positive role model and advocate for students' academic, personal, and financial development.

  • Skills, Qualifications, and/or Competencies Required:

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in education, finance, economics, business, mathematics, or a related field preferred.

  • New York State teaching certification preferred; candidates with strong relevant professional experience and subject-matter expertise may also be considered.

  • Experience teaching middle and/or high school students preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of personal finance and financial literacy concepts.

  • Experience developing engaging, student-centered curriculum.

  • Excellent classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Commitment to culturally responsive teaching and creating an inclusive learning environment.

  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts into accessible, age-appropriate lessons.

  • Commitment to the mission and values of a college- and career-focused charter school.

  • Preferred Experience

  • Experience teaching financial literacy, economics, business, entrepreneurship, mathematics, or a related subject.

  • Experience working in a middle or high school setting.

  • Familiarity with financial literacy curricula and standards.

  • Experience with project-based learning and interdisciplinary instruction.

  • Professional experience in finance, banking, entrepreneurship, accounting, or related fields is a plus.

  • Experience preparing students for college, careers, entrepreneurship, or financial independence.
