Intrepid College Prep is a network of free, college preparatory public charter schools located in the Antioch area of Greater Nashville, Tennessee. We educate scholars at two campuses: Opportunity Academy Middle School and Independence Academy High School. Our 5-12 model ensures that scholars have the opportunity to engage in a rigorous, college-preparatory education for eight years prior to their transition to college and the professional opportunities that follow. We are an open-enrollment school, which means that our scholars do not have to take an entrance test or pay tuition to enroll.

School Counselor Duties and Responsibilities

Intrepid College Prep develops students ethically, as well as academically, to excel in college and beyond. A critical role in ethical development is ensuring that students have the intentional and individualized supports they deserve. The School Counselor will lead this charge by providing comprehensive, data-driven counseling services that utilize prevention, intervention, and assessment strategies. The School Counselor will work directly with students, teachers, and families at Opportunity Academy to collaborate, build relationships, and foster a supportive school culture across the network.
  • Delivers comprehensive counseling services, activities, programs, and interventions critical to the academic and personal/social development of all students.
  • Run individual and group counseling sessions with research-based social and emotional practices.
  • Facilitate professional development for teachers to help them understand child development and how it affects student performance academically and social/emotionally.
  • Build relationships and collaborate with external education and social services professionals to develop appropriate agency services for students and families.
  • Develops a written, annual plan which is data driven and includes measurable goals which are appropriately scoped and sequenced based on the needs of the school and students.
  • Utilizes the Early Warning Indicators to implement targeted interventions for at-risk students.
  • Administers needs assessments regularly to identify and prioritize school and student needs.
  • Advocates and intervenes on behalf of each student whose immediate needs, concerns, or problems are impeding his/her academic and/or personal/social development.
  • Demonstrates program accountability using data to document the results of strategies and interventions that are used to improve student academic performance.
  • Partners with administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community to remove barriers to student success and to close the achievement gap.
  • Protects confidentiality of records and information about students and staff. Must use discretion and adhere to all state laws and school policies when sharing any such information.
  • Collaborate with Scholar Support Team regularly to develop a plan to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Availability and willingness to engage in a limited number of evening/weekend student recruitment and parent outreach events.
  • Qualifications

  • Dedication to the educational success of historically underserved students .
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to reflect and articulate the lessons learned from past experience.
  • Minimum of two years counseling experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred, but not required.
  • Highest commitment to improving services through collaboration, best practices, regular assessment and data analysis.
  • Effective communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Holds a MS in School Counseling or MSW with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0.
  • Speaks Spanish or has experience working with bilingual students (preferred).

    Compensation
    We offer a generous compensation package, including full health benefits.  All staff members are equipped with the tools needed to succeed, including a dedicated work space, laptop computer, email, high-speed internet access, and all necessary supplies. Compensation is highly competitive; teachers are eligible to participate in the MNPS Retirement System.

    Base salaries are determined by the ICP salary scale. Placement on the salary scale is determined by years of relevant, teaching experience. We do not negotiate salaries because of research that demonstrates the resulting impact of inequitable pay, primarily for women and people of color. Placement on the salary scale is solely determined by relevant experience.

    Starting salary (Year 0) for a certified teacher with zero years of experience starts at $53,000. Please reach out to the hiring team for inquires regarding the salary scale.
