The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

At WGU, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their position, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is:

Job Description

The Learning Experience Designer, Internal designs learning experiences that inspire and develop employees. This individual collaborates with partners in People Development and across the University to define learning needs, align stakeholders, and deliver inclusive, outcome-aligned solutions that support the university’s mission and strategic goals. This individual applies tested theories along side emerging technologies such as AI-enabled design to create effective and innovative learning deliverables.

Success in this position requires agile and innovative thinking, the ability to embrace change, and a desire to continuously learn and develop. Competitive candidates typically have experience with large-scale institutional learning, including job-specific and technical learning topics.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborates cross-functionally with business leaders and departments to identify learning needs, build stakeholder alignment, support operational and organizational initiatives, implement learning solutions, and enable effective change management.

  • Applies learning design methodologies such as ADDIE, presents design recommendations, facilitates stakeholder input, and cultivates consensus and shared decision-making to define project deliverables.

  • Creates project deliverables aligned to quality standards and learning outcomes, which may include job aids, scenario-based learning, eLearning or hybrid learning, assessments, and simulations.

  • Applies AI-enabled design practices and appropriate learning technologies to improve analysis, ideation, prototyping, development efficiency, personalization, and measurement while upholding quality, accessibility, and responsible use standards.

  • Manages learning design projects by establishing project roles and timelines, facilitating stakeholder meetings and communication, aligning expectations, identifying milestones, deliverables, and dependencies, mitigating project risks, and ensuring quality learning products are ready for project team review.

  • Adapts project management strategies to client and stakeholder needs, including more complex clients and projects, with support from a leader as needed.

  • Provides accurate time estimates for deliverables and effectively allocates time to achieving goals. Organizes and plans work on multiple projects in two-week sprints. Consults with leader on prioritization or time allocation when appropriate.

  • Identifies and builds ways of measuring learning effectiveness, including outcome-based metrics and assessment effectiveness.

  • Conducts curriculum review by analyzing data, making recommendations for improvement, and implementing revisions.

  • Performs analysis in concert with stakeholders and subject matter experts.

  • Develops a comprehensive understanding of employee functions across the University, including measures of success, skills, behaviors, and knowledge necessary to perform. Uses this knowledge to identify and solve for gaps in existing curricula.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to apply theories and best practices to support achievement of adult learning outcomes, including competency-based educational strategies, instructional design, assessment methodologies, inclusive design, and eLearning best practices.

  • Skilled in applying AI-enabled design tools and workflows to support learning analysis, content development, prototyping, accessibility, quality review, and continuous improvement.

  • Advanced written communication skills, including technical writing, editing, and adapting content to the needs of the target audience.

  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, including the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, communicate persuasively, and guide alignment around learning solutions.

  • Ability to build positive working relationships, earn stakeholder trust, and contribute as a collaborative partner across teams.

  • Continuously seeks improvement by actively listening to solve problems, seeking and applying constructive feedback, and providing constructive feedback to others.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, including time management, prioritization, and problem solving.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting deadlines and quality standards.

  • Advanced skills in critical thinking, analysis, research, and synthesis of data to make informed decisions.

  • Ability to manage projects using agile methodology.

  • Skilled with MS Office, multimedia tools, and learning technology.

  • Skilled in using LMS functionality to support learning design, troubleshoot basic questions, and use reporting to study learning effectiveness.


Education

  • Bachelor’s degree. Degree in instructional design, learning experience design, educational technology, or comparable degree preferred.


Experience

  • 2 or more years of experience with instructional/learning experience design.

  • Equivalent relevant experience performing the essential functions of this job may substitute for education degree requirements. Generally, equivalent relevant experience is defined as one year of experience for one year of education and is at the discretion of the hiring manager.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in instructional design, learning experience design, educational technology, or comparable degree.

  • Previous experience in higher education or corporate learning.

  • Previous experience with HTML coding and/or JavaScript preferred.

This position requires occasional travel of up to 20%, including attendance at designated company summits and conferences relevant to the role.

Position & Application Details
