The Integrated System Planning (ISP) Engineering Intern will support the ISP team in evaluating, developing, and scoping transmission and substation projects that enhance the reliability, capacity, and long-term performance of the electric power system. This position provides hands-on exposure to utility planning, project development, engineering analysis, and cross-functional coordination within a regulated electric utility environment.
The intern will work closely with transmission planners, substation engineers, project managers, and other internal stakeholders to assist with data collection, engineering evaluations, project scope development, and documentation. Responsibilities may include reviewing system planning studies, supporting project estimates, tracking project development activities, analyzing technical data, and participating in meetings related to transmission and substation planning initiatives.
Through this role, the intern will gain practical experience in electric utility operations, transmission and substation planning processes, project lifecycle management, and engineering best practices. The position offers opportunities to develop technical, analytical, and communication skills while contributing to projects that support the safe and reliable delivery of electricity to customers.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Support transmission and substation project scoping, development, and documentation activities for the Integrated System Planning (ISP) team.
Assist engineers with collecting, organizing, and analyzing planning, operational, and engineering data used for system studies and project evaluations.
Participate in the review of transmission and substation planning studies, project estimates, and engineering reports.
Collaborate with planners, engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to track project progress and support project development efforts.
Prepare technical documentation, presentations, and project status updates for internal meetings and planning activities.
Gain experience with utility planning processes, electric power system operations, and the development of projects that support system reliability and customer needs.
This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements:
Current student, Junior or higher
Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering (plus for power systems engineering program) or Computer Science
Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (preferred).
Basic understanding of electrical power systems, transmission lines, substations, or utility operations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.
Coursework in power systems, electrical machines, power system analysis, or related subjects.
Familiarity with engineering software, data analysis tools, or GIS applications.
Previous internship, co-op, research, or project experience related to electrical engineering or utilities.
Interest in electric utility planning, transmission systems, substation engineering, and grid reliability.
