A Day in the Life
The Cranial & Spinal Technologies (CST) Operating Unit develops implant, instrumentation, biologics, navigation, robotic, and enabling technologies used in neurosurgical and spinal procedures. Within CST, the Spine New Product Introduction (NPI) organization partners with surgeons, clinical experts, commercial teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to develop and launch technologies that address degenerative, deformity, tumor, and trauma-related spinal conditions.
This position is based in Memphis, Tennessee, a Medtronic Spine hub location, and follows an onsite work model. Domestic travel up to 25% is expected, including customer visits, cadaver labs, field observations, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
The Engineering Program Manager, Spine NPI leads multiple new product development programs within the Cranial & Spinal Technologies portfolio. This role provides program leadership across cross-functional teams, translates surgeon and customer insights into development priorities, and drives execution from concept through commercial launch while ensuring alignment with technical, quality, regulatory, and business objectives.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead multiple Spine NPI programs from concept development through commercial launch, ensuring achievement of project scope, timelines, milestones, and business objectives.
- Direct cross-functional project teams and coordinate activities across Research and Development, Marketing, Sales, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Operations, and Supply Chain functions.
- Translate voice-of-customer feedback and clinical insights into product requirements, design inputs, specifications, and development priorities.
- Develop and maintain project plans, resource forecasts, risk assessments, critical paths, and execution metrics to support program governance and decision-making.
- Drive technical and business decisions by evaluating tradeoffs, resolving complex development challenges, and managing program risks.
- Oversee product verification and validation activities to ensure products meet user needs, system requirements, and intended use.
- Collaborate with surgeons, sales representatives, suppliers, and external partners to support product development, clinical understanding, and market readiness activities.
- Mentor engineers and project team members while supporting compliance with applicable quality system requirements and product development processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or another engineering discipline and 5+ years of engineering design and development experience, including 3+ years of medical device experience in spine, trauma, orthopedics, or dental applications.
- 5+ years of program or project management experience leading product development programs through commercialization.
- Experience working within Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-regulated and/or medical device environments operating under applicable quality system requirements.
- Experience using three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) tools such as Creo or SolidWorks and product lifecycle management systems such as Windchill or Agile Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).
- Experience creating and managing project plans, resource plans, baselines, schedules, and critical paths using Microsoft Project or comparable project management tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Master of Science in Engineering and/or Master of Business Administration (MBA).
- Experience developing spinal implants, spinal instrumentation, or other musculoskeletal medical device technologies.
- Knowledge of systems engineering methodologies, including requirements development, traceability, allocation, verification, and validation.
- Knowledge of spinal anatomy, surgical procedures, machining processes, additive manufacturing, and competitive spinal device technologies.
For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).The base salary range applies across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and certain locations in California.
