Industrial Engineer II

Woodward’s Industrial Product Division in Fort Collins, Colorado is seeking an Industrial Engineer II to support manufacturing operations through mechanical design and the development of repeatable engineering practices for automated systems. This role combines hands-on machine design with responsibility for improving mechanical design standards, documentation, and team capability.

The Industrial Engineer II will develop machine concepts, mechanical designs, bills of material, and supporting documentation for automation projects while also helping define the mechanical design process used within the department. The role works closely with controls engineers, programmers, electrical designers, manufacturing team members, and operations leaders to develop automation solutions that improve production flow, equipment performance, operator efficiency, and manufacturability.

In addition to executing design work, this position is expected to help mentor newer engineers, share technical knowledge, and support the growth of consistent design practices across the team.

Estimated annual base pay: $77,000.to $105,000

All members are included in the annual cash bonus opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support manufacturing operations through the mechanical design, development, and implementation of automated systems.
  • Develop machine concepts, mechanical designs, equipment layouts, assemblies, detailed drawings, and supporting documentation.
  • Create bills of material and support component ordering for automation projects.
  • Develop, document, and maintain mechanical engineering processes, standards, templates, and review practices to support consistent design execution.
  • Help define and improve the department’s mechanical design workflow from concept through release and implementation.
  • Serve as a technical resource for automated machine design projects on the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering team.
  • Mentor and support newer engineers by sharing mechanical design knowledge, CAD best practices, and documentation expectations.
  • Support design reviews and help ensure engineering deliverables are complete, accurate, and aligned with company standards.
  • Analyze production material flow to identify bottlenecks, delays, and opportunities to improve production timelines.
  • Perform basic capacity and resource calculations to identify constraints and resource needs for specific tasks or projects.
  • Manage small-scale manufacturing projects under supervision, including timelines, budgets, deliverables, and stakeholder communication.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of using one or more machines to complete sequential operations.
  • Review electrical requirements with electrical designers, including input and output devices.
  • Review machine operations and machine sequences with programmers.
  • Partner with cross-functional team members to implement automation solutions that meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives.

  • CAD proficiency: Use CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or AutoCAD
  • Engineering documentation: Oversee the creation of engineering drawings and documentation in alignment with industry standards and company guidelines.
  • Mechanical design: Develop and design mechanical components and assemblies that meet functional, performance, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Design process ownership: Support the full design process from initial concept development through detailed design, review, release, and implementation.
  • Issue resolution: Troubleshoot design and manufacturing issues, analyze problems, and implement effective solutions.
  • Drawing review: Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, machining methods, finishes, hardness, and related design requirements.
  • Automation knowledge: Understand standard automation components and concepts, including robotics, motion solutions, fixture design, press design, pneumatics, servo-controlled systems, and related technologies.
  • Productivity improvements: Identify production inefficiencies, propose practical solutions, and support workflow improvements.
  • Data analysis: Analyze production data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and bottlenecks using tools such as Pareto charts and process control charts.
  • Workstation design: Design workstations that improve operator efficiency and reduce fatigue using ergonomic principles.
  • Design for manufacturability and assembly: Apply DFMA principles to improve manufacturability and assembly while working with cross-functional teams to refine designs.
  • Layout planning: Use CAD tools to make layout adjustments and visualize workspace modifications, identify inefficiencies in material flow, and collaborate with others to improve layouts and space utilization.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Bachelor of Science, in engineering or a related technical field.

Successful Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Demonstrated experience designing automation equipment.
  • Experience developing or improving mechanical design processes, standards, or documentation practices.
  • Experience mentoring or training engineers, designers, or technical team members.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and Creo CAD software.
