We are seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead the development, scaling, and operation of a customer-facing Managed Database Platform. This leadership role is responsible for driving engineering strategy, operational excellence, and technical innovation while building highly reliable, scalable, and secure cloud database services used by enterprise customers.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and relational databases, along with a proven ability to build high-performing engineering organizations. You will work closely with Product, Infrastructure, SRE, Security, and Customer Success teams to deliver world-class managed database solutions that prioritize reliability, performance, and customer experience.

Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
- Lead the engineering organization responsible for designing, developing, and operating managed database services.
- Define and execute the long-term engineering roadmap aligned with business objectives and customer needs.
- Build, mentor, and retain high-performing engineering teams while fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and technical excellence.
- Drive architectural decisions that balance scalability, reliability, operational efficiency, and engineering velocity.
- Partner with Product, Infrastructure, SRE, Security, Support, and GTM teams to deliver high-quality customer-facing services.
Cloud Platform & Database Engineering
- Design and operate highly available cloud-native database platforms capable of supporting large-scale production workloads.
- Lead engineering initiatives around replication, high availability, backup & restore, disaster recovery, scaling, upgrades, storage optimization, and database lifecycle management.
- Build scalable control planes, automation frameworks, deployment systems, monitoring platforms, and fleet management capabilities.
- Continuously improve platform performance, resilience, durability, observability, and operational efficiency.
- Drive engineering best practices for distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, and managed services.
Reliability & Operational Excellence
- Establish and monitor Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for availability, latency, durability, backup success, recovery, and overall service health.
- Lead incident management, root cause analysis, change management, deployment safety, and capacity planning initiatives.
- Improve operational visibility through comprehensive monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability frameworks.
- Drive continuous improvements in deployment automation, service reliability, and operational readiness.
- Balance technical debt reduction with rapid feature delivery and product innovation.
Database Platform Strategy
- Provide technical leadership across relational database technologies, including replication, failover, performance optimization, connection management, maintenance automation, and storage scaling.
- Guide engineering decisions for managed database services across cloud environments.
- Develop scalable operational mechanisms that simplify database management while improving customer experience.
- Support enterprise customers by improving platform reliability, operational playbooks, and reference architectures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, including leadership in cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, database platforms, or large-scale engineering organizations.
- 4+ years of experience managing engineering managers or senior technical leaders.
- Proven experience designing, building, and operating customer-facing cloud services at scale.
- Strong expertise in relational databases and production database workloads.
- Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure, high availability, distributed systems, and platform engineering.
- Experience leading high-availability production systems with strong reliability, security, durability, and operational requirements.
- Demonstrated expertise in monitoring, incident response, capacity planning, deployment automation, and operational governance.
- Strong cross-functional leadership and executive communication skills.
- Proven ability to recruit, mentor, and build high-performing engineering organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building or operating managed database platforms based on PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, OpenSearch, or similar technologies.
- Hands-on experience with cloud database platforms and managed database services.
- Expertise in replication, backup & restore, failover, read replicas, storage scaling, query optimization, online upgrades, and database maintenance.
- Experience developing automation frameworks, fleet management systems, self-healing infrastructure, and cloud control planes.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale customer deployments and mission-critical production environments.
