About this Digital Literacy Coordinator (Upshur County Public Library) - ACC Member role at Lead For America

Lead For America · Onsite · Buckhannon, West Virginia, United States

Note: This is a full-time ACC AmeriCorps position with the Upshur County Public Library

About the American Connection Corps:

The American Connection Corps (ACC), an AmeriCorps program of Lead For America (LFA), is a service fellowship program aimed at helping communities build the digital connectivity necessary to expand opportunity and economic mobility, ranging from healthcare access to quality employment.

ACC Members spend a year serving with locally-rooted organizations, helping address the digital divide and strengthen access to opportunity. Through their service, they gain hands-on experience, build in-demand skills, and explore career pathways while making a tangible impact in their communities.

About the Upshur County Public Library

The mission of the Upshur County Public Library is to provide lifelong learning opportunities to this rural county by connecting people with information. All ages have access to a varied, balanced current collection of materials in formats appropriate for their level. Access to high speed internet connections and evolving technologies to meet changing informational needs in a pleasant, secure environment is provided. Residents will have access to the information needed to make informed life choice decisions. We support intellectual freedom through the Library Bill of Rights.

Position Overview

The AmeriCorps member would maintain the existing digital literacy class opportunities set up by the 2025-2026 AmeriCorps member, and perform community outreach to support the continuation of digital literacy classes on Northstar or other platforms (like Cell-Ed, which is smartphone based digital literacy), perform tech help sessions, coordinate and assist with the implementation of device giveaways, and other such technology help in additional locations in coordination with host site staff and partners. These trainings would provide needed digital skills and technology upgrades for community members to enable them to better navigate a digital world and increase equitable access to technology resources.

Key Responsibilities

The ACC Member will:

  • Develop a sustainable calendar of computer trainings and tech help office hours, with at least one event per month (could also focus heavily on 1 county each month on a rotating basis) in every county in their assigned areas by the end of their AmeriCorps tenure in collaboration with site staff and community partners.
  • Recruit and support engagement of at least one local volunteer instructor in each county to help support and sustain the overall digital literacy curriculum during and after the current members' AmeriCorps tenure.
  • Research and support the incorporation of other platforms such as Cell-Ed that are designed to teach digital literacy skills via other interfaces besides computers (like smartphones and tablets) into the overall digital literacy curriculum in coordination with program leadership.
  • Develop and distribute marketing materials for classes. Liaison with library staff and staff at other locations to maximize marketing of classes and other tech related events as part of outreach and engagement support efforts.
  • Host at least one large free tech giveaway using resources like PCs for People in their assigned areas during their term of service.
  • Evaluate participants' results on Northstar evaluations to support improvement efforts and share findings with staff. Contribute to efforts to improve participant outcomes (target improvement goals may be set by program staff).

All activities performed by the AmeriCorps Member will occur under staff supervision and within the approved AmeriCorps position description and program scope. The Member serves in a direct service and capacity-building role and may not independently manage programs, supervise staff or contractors, determine eligibility, engage in fundraising or grant writing leadership, or perform duties that duplicate, displace, or supplant employees or contractors.

Learning & Development Opportunities

As an ACC Member, you will receive structured training and support throughout your service year, including:

  • A two-week-long virtual orientation with the national cohort to kick off the service year.
  • A week-long, in-person national Winter Institute convening with your ACC cohort — travel, lodging, and a per diem stipend are fully covered.
  • Twice-monthly virtual training on skills for service, including project management, asset-based community development, grant writing, and serving vulnerable populations, plus self-paced curricula with opportunities to earn badges and credentials.
  • A structured community listening tour at the start of service to understand local needs, assets, and opportunities.
  • Dedicated 1:1 support from a Lead For America Program Coordinator and twice-monthly peer pod meetings for networking and professional development.
  • Access to a national network of ACC Members, alumni, and community partners.

Requirements

  • Passion for community service and connecting your neighbors to the digital tools, skills, and opportunities they need to thrive.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Interest in gaining experience in community development or digital inclusion.

Eligibility:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident.
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Be 17 years of age or older by the start of service.
  • Have not already served four (4) or more AmeriCorps State/National terms.

Timeline:
