About this Deckhand role at Svitzer

The Deck Hand reports directly to the Master (Captain) and contributes to ensuring the vessel is always available for safe and efficient operations in accordance with company policies, procedures, applicable legislation, and operational requirements.

Key responsibilities include:

Perform all duties safely and seek guidance from the Master whenever there is uncertainty before commencing work.
Actively promote and contribute to a strong safety culture by:
Proposing initiatives to improve onboard safety.
Participating in safety drills, training, and emergency response exercises.
Reporting safety hazards, observations, near misses, incidents, defects, pollution risks, injuries, illnesses, or damage through established reporting procedures.
Understanding and applying the company’s Stop Work and Take 5 procedures whenever a task is considered unsafe.
Complying with all requirements of the Company Safety Management System.
Support all vessel operations, including:
Assisting with towing and salvage operations.
Supporting workshop activities ashore and equipment preparation onshore.
Operating deck, towing, and associated vessel machinery and equipment safely and efficiently.
Perform maintenance, repair, and housekeeping duties throughout the vessel, including decks, engine room, accommodation spaces, and other assigned areas, in accordance with the Planned Maintenance System and instructions from the Master, Captain, or Engineer.
Maintain a working knowledge of all onboard safety and emergency equipment and be capable of using such equipment effectively during emergencies.
Be capable of operating the vessel in emergency situations when required.
Stand watches as assigned, including lookout duties on the bridge and deck.
Maintain a basic working knowledge of VHF radio communications and communicate effectively with customers, pilots, port authorities, and other stakeholders as required.
Handle, store, and secure supplies, stores, and equipment in a safe, efficient, and timely manner.
Build and maintain professional working relationships with customers, pilots, port authorities, agents, and other stakeholders, and participate in operational meetings when required.
Conduct induction and safety familiarization for visitors, employees, and other authorized personnel boarding the vessel when designated officers are unavailable.
Take ownership of assigned vessel areas and ensure they are maintained to the required operational, safety, and housekeeping standards.
Comply with all applicable statutory, regulatory, and company requirements, including those established by the IMO, Classification Societies, Flag State Administrations, National Authorities, and Port Authorities.
Complete all mandatory training and actively pursue ongoing professional development to maintain competence and support vessel operations.
Carry out duties in a professional, responsible, adaptable, and flexible manner to meet vessel and crewing requirements.
Perform any other duties reasonably assigned by the Captain, Master, Engineer, or Management from time to time.
