Who we are

Since 1843, The Economist Group has championed independence, excellence and openness, helping people understand and tackle the critical challenges shaping the world. Today, we are building on that legacy as a global media and information-services company powered by digital innovation, analytical rigour and evidence-based insight.

Across our three businesses -The Economist, Economist Enterprise and Economist Education - we deliver trusted analysis and insights to individuals and organisations in more than 170 countries. United by a shared purpose to drive progress, we empower decision-makers to make sense of change and chart a course through an increasingly complex world.

As a colleague, you will be part of a culture that values ideas, encourages ownership and holds itself to high standards. We invest in people who are curious, thoughtful and adaptable, whether they are launching new products, reporting on global events or harnessing emerging technologies such as AI to improve how we work. Here, fresh thinking is taken seriously, ambition is matched by integrity, and great work is recognised. Working across disciplines, geographies and perspectives, we are united by a commitment to innovation, excellence and creating meaningful impact.

Each year Economist Enterprise organises around 150 sessions for individual corporate, governmental and NGO clients called “custom events” on a range of interesting, timely subjects such as the diffusion of AI, reproductive health and political polarisation. They take the form of roundtables and panels and are sometimes held in conjunction with other gatherings such as the World Economic Forum in Davos and the United Nations General Assembly. The public face of these sessions are agendas and marketing materials that need to adhere to The Economist Group’s quality standards and editorial guidelines.

Reporting to the Lead Subeditor, this is a highly collaborative role, working alongside programmers, marketers and the Editorial Director for Economist Enterprise. You will need a deep understanding of live events as a product and of senior professional audiences, and will be able to influence not only how content is worded, but how events are conceptualised and marketed.

Responsibilities:

  • Reshaping agendas and marketing copy for custom events.
  • Tailoring content based on current global dynamics, location and audience.
  • Judging whether content aligns with The Economist Group’s editorial integrity, including rejecting sponsor-driven framing.
  • You will also support the Lead Subeditor on large-scale events, including The Economist Group’s flagship, established annual conferences such as Sustainability Week, Commercialising Quantum and our Space Summit series.

Who you are:

  • You have an exceptional command of written English, including grammar, style and tone.
  • You have a blend of journalistic and research skills, plus a strong commercial sense.
  • You ideally have a degree in journalism, international relations, politics or history, and 5-10 years’ experience as a subeditor or editor in a similar role.
  • You actively follow and engage with current affairs and policy debates.
  • You have experience dealing with live events as a product.
  • You are confident in identifying and challenging content that is deficient, insensitive or off-brand.
  • You are an excellent communicator and negotiator.

**This is not a traditional subeditor role. Please include a cover letter explaining what unique qualities, skills, or experiences you would bring to the position*
