P-RDQ427R495
At Databricks, we are passionate about enabling data teams to solve the world's toughest problems — from making the next mode of transportation a reality to accelerating the development of medical breakthroughs. We do this by building and running the world's best data and AI infrastructure platform so our customers can use deep data insights to improve their business. Founded by engineers — and customer obsessed — we leap at every opportunity to solve technical challenges, from designing next-gen UI/UX for interfacing with data to scaling our services and infrastructure across millions of virtual machines. And we're only getting started.
As a Senior Engineering Manager on the Artifact Distribution team, you will lead an engineering team responsible for Databricks’ core artifact storage and distribution infrastructure.
Every machine launched in the cloud by Databricks— millions of cloud machines daily—relies on this service to fetch container images, machine learning model weights, dependencies, and runtime configurations to initialize. This infrastructure is mission-critical to daily operations and directly impacts company revenue.
The impact you will have:
- Lead Mission-Critical Infrastructure: Direct a high-impact engineering team responsible for artifact storage, cross-cloud & cross-region replication, and distribution service scaling across millions of cloud instances daily.
- Set Technical Strategy & Architectural Direction: Drive the multi-year roadmap for low-level artifact storage, peer-to-peer distribution, and cloud replication.
- Maintain Hands-on Technical Oversight: Leverage Staff-level system design and architecture knowledge to conduct architecture reviews, oversee system reliability, and maintain engineering excellence.
- Cross-Functional Alignment & Communication: Translate complex infrastructure constraints into clear strategies, driving strong alignment across partner product and engineering organizations.
- Team Growth & Talent Attraction: Hire, mentor, and foster the career growth of top-tier engineers in low-level application and platform infrastructure.
What we look for:
- Technical Management Leadership: 4+ years of engineering management experience leading backend or platform infrastructure teams.
- Architectural Depth: A track record of high technical judgment (equivalent to a Staff Engineer) in building and operating large-scale distributed systems, and a deep understanding of customer interactions with platform products across multiple components.
- Domain Expertise: Deep experience in low-level backend or cloud infrastructure, with hands-on familiarity in key areas such as:
- Excellence in Execution & Communication: Strong communication skills with a proven track record of driving cross-functional alignment and managing stakeholder expectations across teams.
- Hiring & Talent Development: Proven success attracting, recruiting, and growing Senior and Staff-level ICs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience at major cloud providers or scale-out tech companies
- Familiarity with high-throughput artifact delivery, large-scale ML model weight distribution, or container infrastructure management.
- Experience evolving team structures and processes during hyper-growth without sacrificing operational reliability.
