Purpose of Position
Working within one of our growing Engineering teams, this role reports to an Engineering Manager. You will be working closely with your team members to write SOLID, secure & well-tested code, implement new features and maintain our award-winning marketing platform.
As a Junior Software Engineer, you are a passionate and innovative technologist with a proactive, quality first approach to development. You eager to become an expert in our technical stack, open to feedback and collaboration with your new colleagues. You want to improve your skills, extending their awareness from the codebase to include topics such as quality, environments and delivery.
We design performant, state-of-the-art software on AWS with a focus on Kafka, Docker and services such as AWS Lambda, ECS, API Gateway and DynamoDB. We constantly improve our codebase by removing legacy and unlocking migrations, with the plan to shift everything to the Cloud. We expose customer facing UIs that enable our customers to interact with our product.
Responsibilities:
- Code development, refactoring and innovation.
- Build new products and help shape development technologies and practices.
- Help re-engineer, migrate and continuously improve existing applications.
- Work with Product Managers to convert ideas to user stories and user stories to features and tasks, and negotiate prioritisation of technical backlog
- Design and build distributed systems using streaming, queueing and database solutions.
- Work with a wide range of technologies as needed and be encouraged to experiment and drive change.
- Work in a small team of passionate software engineers on the entire life cycle of a service or product.
- Develop code and contribute to reviews, retrospectives, planning and development sessions.
- Contribute to group development initiatives and discussions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues in a timely fashion when required, with focus on our customers
- Communicate effectively in both verbal (day-to-day discussions, team meetings) and written forms (documentation, emails, communication tools) with local and remote team members.
Requirements:
- Basic experience with any OOP (ideally Java or Node.js), RESTful APIs and Microservices, unit testing, relational databases, event driven architecture
- Basic experience and understanding of web technologies and practices.
- Basic experience (or at least interest in) working within a cross-functional engineering team alongside Product Owners, UX Designers and Agile Coaches.
- Understanding of the concepts of monitoring applications and debugging live and customer-critical issues.
- Main focus on Java backend technologies, and in some cases Typescript and Node.js.
- Building systems cloud-first (Docker, AWS - Lambda, ECS, DynamoDB, and related serverless technologies) but any cloud solution experience is welcomed.
- Knowledge of Git and agile processes.
- Exposure to TDD or BDD practices.
- Open to trying new approaches, technical and procedural, and happy to touch other languages that might be outside your main tech stack.
- Interest in growing professionally and establish a development plan
- Willing to interact with direct peers, negotiate with product, start taking ownership for smaller technical decisions, occasionally moderate agile ceremonies
