As a Principal Infrastructure Engineer at Toast, you will lead the architecture of systems powering our developer ecosystem and software delivery lifecycle. This includes platforms for code collaboration, service discovery, developer workflows, and CI/CD at scale.

Toast has invested in a strong foundation of developer tooling and platforms. This role is an opportunity to build on that foundation by connecting these systems into a unified intuitive experience, helping engineers move from ideation to production with speed, clarity, and confidence.

AI-assisted development is deeply embedded in engineering at Toast. The majority of engineers use AI tools daily, and AI agents participate in code review, build triage, and operational workflows. This is your chance to pioneer how the internal developer platform evolves, creating a future that empowers both humans and agents to achieve more.

A day in the life (Responsibilities) 

• Define and drive the architecture of the end-to-end developer experience across source control (GHES), developer portal (Backstage), engineering metadata, and CI/CD systems
• Optimize developer tooling to enhance engineering productivity, accelerate feedback loops, and reduce friction across the SDLC
• Own and evolve the developer portal as the central system for service discovery, documentation, and workflow orchestration
• Design and improve CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and release processes to increase reliability, security, and delivery speed
• Architect the developer platform to serve both human developers and AI agents, maintaining the guardrails that make both safe to operate at scale
• Use telemetry and insights to identify opportunities and drive measurable improvements in developer experience
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to advance shift-left methodologies and promote a fail-fast engineering culture
• Lead through influence across multiple teams and reporting lines, setting technical direction and driving adoption of platform standards without direct authority

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

• Deep software engineering background building platforms, developer tooling, or software delivery systems
• Experience working with systems like GitHub Enterprise, Backstage or similar portals, and CI/CD platforms at scale
• Strong understanding of developer workflows across the software development lifecycle
• Ability to design systems that span multiple tools, teams, and stages of the SDLC
• Track record of improving developer productivity or engineering effectiveness at scale
• Demonstrated ability to drive adoption of technical standards across teams you do not control
• Experience building or scaling internal developer platforms
• Familiarity with artifact management, dependency management, and release governance
• Experience using data and telemetry to improve engineering workflows
• Strong working expereince in languages such as Go, Java, and Kotlin

The Infrastructure Engineering team’s mission is to provide cloud native infrastructure, automation and tools that enable teams across Toast to deliver products in a safe, secure and agile manner, with minimal operational dependencies.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will be responsible for platform architecture and providing the automation and implementation for landing zones as well as network and security infrastructure for new AWS regions. 

A day in the life (Responsibilities) 

• Work within a Scrum team to create, document and support various infrastructure as code modules.
• Create, document and support various tools and services used in order to support continuous integration, continuous delivery and continuous deployment of highly available infrastructure in various environments.
• Use your familiarity with DevOps methodologies and practices to foster a culture of quality while facilitating developer velocity.
• Create tools to help our developers move their infrastructure from a monolithic repo to individual service repos for use with our IDP.
• You believe internal tools deserve unit tests.
• Lead by example with code standards and design; help implement these across the scrum team’s products.
• Mentor and support developers within the organisation on using and extending of IaC tooling and support systems using DevOps methodologies.

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

• Minimum 6+ years of experience in a DevOps/Infra engineering role
• Expertise with at least one public cloud computing offering such as AWS, GCP or Azure infrastructure SDKs
• Solid experience with writing Terraform Providers
• Expertise with Infrastructure-as-Code framework internals & SDKs (Terraform providers, Ansible modules & plugins, etc)
• Solid experience in Go, Python, Java or Kotlin with a strong understanding of testing, quality and best practices.
• Experience maintaining large-scale infrastructure, including both production and nonproduction workloads.
• Experience with the continuous integration, deployment, and delivery of Cloud Infrastructure at scale for technology teams of hundreds of developers.
• A desire to build a diverse team that wins together and prioritises customer success.
• Experience leading the build and scale of critical platform features.

A day in the life (Responsibilities) 

• Own and drive the end-to-end design process for product features within the Guest org, moving from initial discovery through high-fidelity execution with strong autonomy.
• Use data and research to substantiate your design decisions. You’ll be responsible for translating guest analytics, research, and restaurant feedback into a rigorous methodology that informs the user journey.
• Deliver polished, high-fidelity artifacts that account for complex restaurant constraints. You will utilize and contribute to the Toast design system, ensuring your work is scalable and technically sound.
• Act as a dependable partner to your Product and Engineering counterparts. You’ll make your work visible early and often, using storytelling to build alignment and ensure technical feasibility.
• Be the voice of the customer in every room. You will break down complex workflows, like online ordering or loyalty sign-ups, into intuitive, delightful experiences that feel like true hospitality.
