As an Assistant Coach (Assistant General Manager), you support your store as a leader, strategist, and mentor. You'll inspire your team, drive operational excellence, and deliver exceptional guest experiences using data-driven insights to build healthier communities through real food.

What You’ll Do

As an Assistant Coach (Assistant General Manager), you're a hands-on leader who inspires your team while driving operational excellence. You'll mentor team members to become future leaders, partner with the Head Coach to set goals and track performance, and use data-driven insights to navigate challenges and ensure exceptional guest experiences that build healthier communities through real food. These responsibilities highlight some of the key functions an Assistant Coach performs. Additional supervisory tasks may be assigned as necessary.

Essential Functions

• People + Leading the Team: Partners with the Head Coach on hiring, onboarding, and training while fostering a culture of trust and recognition. Anticipates operational needs and adjusts deployment to support smooth operations. Provides hands-on coaching, steps in during peak times or staffing gaps, and ensures clear communication for consistent execution.
• Food Safety + Journey: Upholds high standards for food safety, cleanliness, and equipment maintenance by inspecting food quality, checking temperatures, and ensuring compliance. Partners with the Head Coach to promptly resolve facility, supply, and quality issues while ensuring team member safety and strong audit performance.
• Customer Experience: Ensures a clean, hospitable, and brand-aligned guest journey by upholding SWEET standards, acting on guest experience metrics, and making timely business decisions to deliver fast, accurate, and memorable in-store and digital experiences.
• Financial + Business Acumen: Supports operational excellence by managing controllable costs, executing schedules, and partnering with the Head Coach to drive sales and implement short- and long-term strategies using insights from the Ops Dashboard.
• Systems, Process + Tech: Ensures effective team deployment and expert use of systems by supporting daily operations, troubleshooting issues, and prioritizing tasks to drive smooth and efficient execution.
• Execute Assistant Coach Career Path Duties: Perform all essential functions outlined in the Shift Leader role, including those from the Kitchen Lead and Team Member roles

Minimum Requirements

• Meet all physical requirements for all roles within the career path, including the Assistant Coach, Shift Leader, Kitchen Lead, and Team Member.
• 2+ years in a restaurant management/supervisory role
• Experience managing and developing 6+ team members per shift
• Food Handler or ServSafe certification
• Must be available to work a minimum of 30 hours per week
• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Must be authorized to work in the United States

Minimum Requirements

• Experience hiring, developing, training, and motivating team members
• Skilled in planning, managing, and forecasting financials, labor, and inventory

• Proven ability to lead and mentor teams collaboratively

The Area Leader has the following core responsibilities

• Developing internal succession plan and a deep bench of managers at all levels of store operations by developing head coaches and the ability to identify “raw” talent. Candidate will have a clear understanding of how to move capability and performance and a sense of urgency to do so.
• Developing and coaching an understanding of the sweetgreen profile and driving recruitment of high-potential internal and external talent.
• Driving continuous performance improvement focusing on leading indicators and established key metrics.  Candidate will be balanced in their approach focusing on people, financial, and customer experience metrics equally.
• Meeting/exceeding annual P&L objectives with a primary focus on top-line sales, productivity, and production management.
• Driving top-line sales performance by fostering customer connections through community marketing, throughput and technology initiatives, new product launches and an in-depth merchandising mentality.
• Training, coaching, and inspiring all locations to deliver exceptional customer experiences and high quality culinary operations ensuring a commitment to sweetgreen’s operational policies and procedures.
• Leading head coach development both personally and professionally through goal setting, coaching and feedback, and an innate understanding of what makes people tick, always connecting development to improved performance.
• Developing strong cross-functional partnerships that ensure the right support is provided to the stores to improve performance and remove barriers to focusing on the customer, people, and results.
• Fostering a positive, team-oriented environment with a healthy competitive spirit that ensures the sharing of best practices and a commitment to goal achievement.
• Fostering and growing strong community connections within each restaurant neighborhood by leading head coaches to develop brand ambassadors and maximizing sweetgreen community-based programs.

About You (minimum requirements)

• 5+ years of prior restaurant experience with 3+ years of multi-unit management.
• Proven experience balancing focus on new store openings and existing business performance: can manage multiple projects, delegates freely with quality follow and drive new store support and project management.
• Strong communication skills that engage people in a genuine, authentic way.  Proactively connects to the team to drive behavior and results.
• Highly organized, able to multi-task, and easily adapts and respond to change.
• 2+ years of experience in both front of house and back of house/kitchen operation management.
• Disciplined approach to priority setting with the ability to identify the root cause of store operations and people opportunities, and move quickly to improve performance.
• Demonstrated management of applicable restaurant regulatory areas, including: employee safety; HAACP; wage + hour; immigration; food safety.
• Proficient computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite.
• Personal characteristics reflective of sweetgreen: high-energy, action oriented, self-motivated, positive and humble attitude, service-focused, flexible, fun-loving personality, and ethical with a high degree of integrity.

The Senior People Business Partner is a key strategic leader on the People Team, serving as a trusted advisor and thought partner to senior Operations leadership. This role drives the development and execution of people strategies that directly support sweetgreen’s growth, partnering seamlessly with Centers of Excellence to build the future of our organization. This is not a “support” seat; it’s a leadership seat.

We are looking for a senior people leader who can think enterprise-first, influence at the VP level, and drive meaningful outcomes across complex, multi-layered organizations. This leader will bring a sharp consultative approach, a data-driven mindset, and the instincts to know when to push, when to coach, and when to escalate. They’ll champion an inclusive culture, lead through ambiguity, and elevate the capability of every leader they touch.

What You’ll Own (Essential Functions of the Role)

• Own and lead workforce planning strategies across multiple levels of Operations leadership, translating business priorities into actionable people plans
• Serve as a strategic advisor to senior leaders (Director through VP level), proactively identifying organizational risks and opportunities before they become problems
• Drive people analytics and storytelling, using data to surface insights, shape strategy, and influence decisions at the executive level
• Lead talent management processes including succession planning, calibration, and high-potential identification; build and maintain a strong internal bench
• Partner with Talent Acquisition and Operations leadership to design and execute a staffing strategy that scales with the business
• Lead complex, high-stakes employee relations investigations end-to-end — from intake through resolution, and provide clear, defensible recommendations
• Serve as a key partner on employment litigation, labor investigations, and regulatory matters, working cross-functionally with Legal
• Translate business insights and trend analysis into retention and engagement strategies with measurable impact
• Coach and develop leaders at all levels on building inclusive, high-performing teams — going beyond the moment to build lasting capability
• Drive and oversee compensation and total rewards programs, including annual salary planning, equity cycles, salary surveys, and benefits administration
• Build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships that reinforce sweetgreen’s core values and culture at scale
• Champion compliance across all people practices, ensuring alignment with sweetgreen policy and federal, state, and local law
• Lead or co-lead enterprise-wide people initiatives, from design through execution, with accountability for outcomes
• Contribute to the development of company-wide policies, training programs, and frameworks that address evolving people priorities
• Mentor and develop junior People team members, raising the overall bar of the team

Desired Experience

• 8+ years of progressive HR Business Partner experience, with at least 3 years supporting senior or executive-level leaders
• Demonstrated experience building and delivering a People Strategy to VP and above; comfort operating in the room with senior stakeholders
• Deep expertise in organizational design and development, with the ability to translate insights into practical, scalable recommendations
• Significant experience with multi-state employers and large hourly or field-based populations; restaurant or retail industry experience a strong plus
• Track record of successfully leading complex change initiatives in ambiguous, fast-paced environments
• Proven ability to lead end-to-end execution of high-visibility, cross-functional projects
• Experience navigating and resolving sophisticated employee relations matters, including those with legal or regulatory exposure
• Strong executive presence and communication skills, equally comfortable in a board room and a restaurant break room
