NDE INSPECTOR (STARSHIP)

The NDE Operations organization at SpaceX is an inclusive, inter-disciplinary team that is committed to the providing high quality inspections of flight components and production assemblies. The breadth of exposure as an NDE Inspector is immense, as the organization is responsible for a large diversity of inspection types across Starship. RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Perform surface and volumetric NDE inspections
• Interpret, evaluate, communicate, and report findings to production and engineering teams
• Interpret and review engineering drawings as required
• Support the development of NDE inspection techniques for complex geometries
• Support research and development of system qualification and certification for critical processes
• Assist in training and developing others on the team

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalency certificate
• Nondestructive Evaluation Level II certification in line with ASNT TC-1A, NAS-410, or DOD guidance in one of the following methods: Eddy current (ET), radiography (RT), digital radiography (DR), dye penetrant (PT), visual inspection (VT), computed radiography (CR), phase array (PAUT), ultrasonic (UT), ultrasonic shear wave (UTSW), or magnetic particle (MT)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Additional nondestructive evaluation Level II OR III certifications in line with ASNT TC-1A, NAS-410, or DOD guidance in one of the following methods: Eddy current (ET), radiography (RT), digital radiography (DR), dye penetrant (PT), visual inspection (VT), computed radiography (CR), phase array (PAUT), ultrasonic (UT), ultrasonic shear wave (UTSW), or magnetic particle (MT)
• Operational experience using one of the listed NDE methods for the inspection of weldments
• 2+ years of experience as a level II nondestructive evaluation/testing inspector
• Experience performing NDE testing within the aerospace industry
• American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
• Experience inspecting advanced materials such as high strength aluminum alloys, precipitation hardened steels, inconel, monel, titanium, and maraging steel (super alloys)
• Knowledge of UTEX InspectionWare software or equivalent
• Knowledge of NASA 5009 standards
• Knowledge of AMS, AWS/ASME, ASTM, standards
• Experience with problem solving tools and techniques including: practical problem solving (PPS), and eight disciplines (8D)
• Basic understanding of Lean principles: 5S, Kaizen, continuous improvement initiative

SUPERVISOR, NDE OPERATIONS (STARSHIP)

The NDE function is organized within focused production area cells alongside Starship development activities utilizing multiple and varied inspection methods to efficiently provide quality control and protect product reliability.

As the NDE Supervisor at SpaceX you will be required to interface across the business. The job function will require emphasizing a “quality first” culture with the team while performing hands-on inspection, troubleshooting, and managing inspectors during day-to-day NDE activities. The supervisor will interact with technical and operations leaders at Starbase. The candidate should possess strong leadership characteristics, structured control, and data-driven performance management, as well as soft skills, such as influencing and persuading. A key eye for detail and the ability to work within complex teams to reach company-wide goals are also attributes which a successful candidate must possess.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Schedule and prioritize work-flow management
• Act as the interface between the team and relevant production partners and customers
• Collaborate with the engineering and level III teams to support inspection requirements
• Manage inspector career development planning and certification training to meet inspection needs in the work center
• Assist in sourcing, recruiting, and hiring
• Manage maintenance planning and scheduling for equipment and facilities
• Prioritize and increase inspection quality by deploying lean strategies, 5S, Kaizen and data-driven metric development
• Manage ASME/NBIC program
• Ensure team maintains proficiency using modern inspection methods, automated systems, tooling, etc. relevant to the work center
• Interact with NDE Engineering and R&D on seamless transitions with minimal production impact
• Assist in the introduction of technological change

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalency certificate
• 3+ years of experience leading/managing a team in a manufacturing production environment

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• 3+ years in quality management and/or non-destructive testing/examination (NDT/NDE) experience/coordination
• Level II certification(s) in line with ANST TC-1A or NAS 410 or DOD guidance in one or more surface methods (PT, MT, VT) and two or more advance methods (PAUT, ET, RT)
• Demonstrated strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills while managing multiple priorities
• NDE level III certification in one or more methods
• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or technical management field
• 5+ years of aerospace experience in a manufacturing production environment
• Knowledge of NASA 5009 standards
• Certified as a NBIC commissioned inspector
• Certifiable as an NBIC OUIO commissioned inspector / supervisor
• Knowledge of AMS, AWS/ASME, ASTM
• Knowledge and understanding of NAS 410 standards
• Problem solving tools and techniques: 5 whys, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Root Cause Analysis
• Knowledge and experience in lean manufacturing principles: ex. 5S, Kaizen, continuous improvement, DMAIC

NDE INSPECTOR TRAINEE (STARSHIP) - TEMPORARY

An NDE Inspector trainee position at SpaceX sits within the NDE Operations team. The purpose of this role is to train effectively and quickly to become qualified and certified across needed NDE applications. A successful individual in this role is studious, autonomous, and motivated to start a career within nondestructive evaluation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Studiously train with multiple NDE Inspectors to gain on-the-job training (OJT)
• Leverage OJT and self-study to effectively prepare for and pass certification examinations and practical tests
• Become certified in the necessary and assigned NDE methods
• Perform NDE inspections with the applicable NDE methods
• Interpret, evaluate, communicate, and report findings to production and engineering teams
• Interpret and review engineering drawings as required
• Support the development of NDE inspection techniques for complex geometries
• Support research and development of future NDE technology for operational improvements
• Assist in training and developing others within the team

POSITION DETAILS:

This is a temporary position with SpaceX for the duration stated, subject to change with minimal notice based on business needs. Temporary employees who successfully complete the assignment may be eligible for conversion to full-time roles.

• LENGTH OF POSITION: 3 months

• SHIFT: Must be available for all shifts (day shift, 6 AM - 6 PM or night shift, 6 PM - 6 AM), overtime and weekends as the schedule varies depending on site operational needs; flexibility is required

NDE RADIOGRAPHY SPECIALIST (STARSHIP)

As an NDE Radiography Specialist technical expert at SpaceX you will be required to interface across the business building a link and providing solutions between initial R&D, engineering, production and quality assurance in the development of specifications, process, procedures and people to support targets and goals such as cycle time, right first time manufacture / assembly, probability of detection and indication/defect reduction. Principle technical understanding of your specific area of expertise and a wide industry knowledge of best practices, tools, equipment and procedures that are needed to ensure we have the best possible solutions deployed to maintain compliance and ensure our launch vehicles maintain reliability and performance for our customers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Technology Development:
     - Systems & tooling selection
     - Systems & tooling qualification
     - System introduction project management
• Process Development:
     - Hardware and software qualification/testing
     - Method process documentation
     - Part specific technique development, testing, documentation and deployment
     - Development of customer relevant reporting packages for multiple data sets as well as single sample results
     - Engineering drawing interpretation and where applicable engineering specification definition support
• Technical Production Support:
     - System level production maintenance and support
     - Tooling/system calibration
     - Production cell technical oversight: daily meetings, troubleshooting
