SMX is seeking a highly skilled Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO) – Sr (Cloud) to support a mission-critical federal program in Huntsville, AL. This individual will serve as a senior cybersecurity and cloud security resource responsible for supporting the security posture, compliance activities, and operational security requirements for enterprise cloud environments and associated information systems. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience supporting classified environments, implementing cybersecurity best practices, and working within complex federal IT infrastructures.
The selected candidate will work closely with engineering, cloud, infrastructure, and government stakeholders to ensure systems remain compliant with federal cybersecurity requirements while supporting operational mission needs. This role requires strong technical expertise across cloud security, vulnerability management, continuous monitoring, incident response support, and security assessment activities. This position is on site in Washington DC and an active Top Secret clearance is mandatory.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary ISSO supporting cloud-hosted and enterprise information systems within classified environments
- Support system security compliance activities in accordance with RMF, NIST, and federal cybersecurity standards
- Maintain and update security documentation including SSPs, POA&Ms, security control assessments, and related artifacts
- Coordinate and support ATO package development, continuous monitoring, and annual security review activities
- Perform vulnerability analysis, remediation tracking, and security reporting using enterprise security tools
- Monitor security posture and support incident response and audit activities as required
- Collaborate with system administrators, cloud engineers, developers, and government stakeholders to ensure secure system operations
- Conduct security assessments and evaluate system configurations against security baselines and compliance requirements
- Support implementation and management of cloud security controls across AWS, Azure, and/or GCP environments
- Analyze and evaluate security risks, recommend mitigations, and support remediation planning efforts
- Assist with security tool integration, log analysis, and monitoring activities across enterprise environments
- Support cybersecurity process improvement initiatives and contribute to security best practices across the program
Required Skills & Experience
- Proficiency in SQL and a strong understanding of database systems.
- Active TS clearance required, SCI Eligible
- Minimum of 9 years of professional experience in cybersecurity, information assurance, or information systems security
- Minimum of 7 years of experience serving as an ISSO within a cleared federal environment
- Possess at least one of the following certifications:
- CISSP
- GISP
- CompTIA CASP+
- Equivalent DoD 8570 IAM Level III certification
- Must possess at least one cloud security certification from AWS, Azure, or GCP, including one or more of the following:
- AWS Certified Security – Specialty
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
- (ISC)² Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP)
- Microsoft AZ-500 Azure Security Engineer Associate
- Google Professional Cloud Security Engineer
- Experience supporting federal RMF and ATO processes
- Strong understanding of NIST security controls, vulnerability management, continuous monitoring, and federal cybersecurity requirements
- Hands-on experience with enterprise security and monitoring tools such as:
- Splunk
- Tenable Nessus
- IBM Guardium
- HP WebInspect
- Security Center
- NMAP
- Similar enterprise cybersecurity platforms
- Experience supporting cloud-based environments and associated security controls
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced operational environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills

We are looking for a skilled Cloud Engineer to join our State and Local Platforms and Data Managed Services team. As a core member of our operations group, you will work across multiple client environments, implementing, maintaining, and supporting cloud infrastructure and services. You’ll collaborate internal teams and clients to ensure the reliability, security, and performance of cloud-based systems, following industry standards and meeting service-level agreements (SLAs). Essential Duties:
• Deploy, configure, and provide day-to-day operational support for client cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP, and/or hybrid).
• Implement and maintain cloud resources, including compute, storage, networking, and security components for multiple clients.
• Support cloud migrations, new implementations, system upgrades, and integrations, working closely with project teams and client contacts.
• Automate routine operational tasks using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, ARM, CloudFormation) and scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash).
• Monitor system health, performance, cost, and security alerts across client environments, proactively resolving issues and escalating as needed.

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
• 3+ years hands-on experience supporting, maintaining, or operating cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), ideally in a managed services or MSP environment.
• Strong understanding of core cloud services (compute, storage, networking, identity, security, backup/recovery).
• Experience with configuration, monitoring, automation, and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, ARM, CloudFormation, etc.).
• Proficient in scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python).

SMX is hiring a number of Information Systems Security Engineer Subject Matter Experts to support a Law Enforcement OCIO's organization to provide Information Security as a Service support across all their major IT Systems These positions will be on site in Washington, DC, Quantico, VA, Huntsville, AL, or Clarksburg, WV and require an active Top-Secret clearance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of security professionals responsible for the end-to-end implementation of the RMF lifecycle for FBI IT systems.
- Oversee and coordinate activities within the Prepare step, ensuring roles, responsibilities, and risk management strategies are clearly defined and maintained.
- Guide system categorization efforts to ensure all information systems are appropriately classified based on mission/business impact and regulatory requirements.
- Direct the selection, tailoring, and documentation of security controls aligned with system categorizations, Bureau risk appetite, and compliance requirements.
- Oversee the implementation of technical, operational, and management controls throughout system and application lifecycles, with a particular focus on quality and completeness of all deliverables.
- Ensure comprehensive security control assessments are planned, executed, and documented to validate the effectiveness of implemented safeguards.
- Prepare risk management documentation for system authorization and executive decision-making.
- Direct ongoing monitoring and continuous assessment activities, collecting metrics to adjust security strategies and ensure sustained compliance.
- Serve as a principal technical advisor on cybersecurity, bringing subject-matter expertise to risk analysis, incident response, system remediation, and audit support efforts.
- Foster a culture of security awareness, providing technical guidance and training to both team members and stakeholders.
- Track, report, and communicate status, risks, and improvement opportunities related to security engineering activities to leadership and stakeholders.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of RMF, NIST guidance, and industry best practices in support of continuous process improvement.

- Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility

Law Enforcement Agency OCIO's organization is providing Information Systems Security as a Service and requires ISSRs to support cybersecurity stakeholders. This position is on site in Washington, DC and requires an active Top-Secret clearance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Ensure that FBI ISs are operated, maintained, and disposed of in accordance with the internal security policies and practices outlined in the approved Security Assessment and Authorization (SAA) package
- Manage the SAA process for new FBI ISs and legacy FBI ISs migrating into the GRC application
- Provide baseline security controls to the system owner, contingent upon the IS’s security categorization, type of information processed and entity type
- Provide a recommendation to the Authorizing Official, in consultation with the system owner, regarding systems’ impact levels and ISs’ authorization boundary
- Ensure that new entities are created in the GRC application with the security categorization of FBI ISs.
- Initiate, coordinate, and recommend to the FBI Authorizing Official all Interconnection Security Agreement (ISAs), Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs), and Memorandum of Agreement (MOAs) that permit the interconnection of an FBI IS with any non-FBI or joint-use IS.
- Perform an independent review of the System Security Plan (SSP) and make approval decisions.
- Request and negotiate the level of testing required for an IS with the Enterprise Information Security Section and the FBI Authorizing Official.
- Schedule security control assessments in coordination with the system owner.
- Coordinate IS security inspections, tests, and reviews with the Security and system owner. Submit the final SAA package to the FBI Authorizing Official for a security ATO decision.
- Ensure that the Security ATO Electronic Communication (EC) is serialized into Sentinel under the applicable case file number.
- Advise the FBI Authorizing Official of IS vulnerabilities and residual risks.
- Ensure that all POA&M actions are completed and tested.
- Coordinate initiation of an event-driven reauthorization with the FBI Authorizing Official.
- Ensure the removal and retirement of FBI ISs being decommissioned, in coordination with the SO, ISSO, and ISSR.
Required Skills & Experience
- At least 7 years serving as an ISSR at a cleared facility.
- Minimum of 10 years work experience in a computer science or Cybersecurity related field.
- Hold Aat least one of the following certifications: Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Global Information Security Professional (GISP), or the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) or other certifications exemplifying skill sets such as those described in DoD Instruction 8570.1 IAM Level III proficiency.
- Familiarity with the use and operation of security tools including Tenable Nessus and/or Security Center, IBM Guardium, HP Weblnspect, Network Mapper (NMAP), and/or similar applications
- A bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or other cyber discipline is preferred
- Active Top-Secret security clearance
