Position Scope

SES AI is seeking a Computational Chemistry Interns to join the Molecular Universe team and support computational modeling and simulation of advanced electrolyte systems. This is a hands-on research role focused on liquid-phase molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, especially for electrolyte systems relevant to next-generation batteries.

Interns will receive training and mentorship from our computational scientist, and collaborate across global teams.

• Duration: 6 months

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the SES Molecular Universe project by supporting computational chemistry modeling and simulation of advanced electrolyte systems
• Independently or collaboratively perform molecular dynamics simulations for liquid-phase systems, especially electrolytes, including system construction, initial structure generation, and simulation parameter setup
• Execute the full MD workflow, including job submission, HPC resource utilization, run monitoring, troubleshooting, and issue resolution
• Analyze simulation results in depth, including but not limited to:
• Structural properties such as radial distribution functions (RDF), coordination numbers, and solvation structures
• Dynamic properties such as diffusion coefficients and ion transport behavior
• Thermodynamic and statistical property extraction
• Build and improve automated data-processing pipelines to enhance simulation efficiency, reproducibility, and scalability
• Convert simulation outputs into clear reports, visualizations, and presentations that support scientific and engineering decision-making
• Collaborate with internal teams to improve workflow robustness and reproducibility across simulation pipelines
• Support the scaling and engineering of molecular simulation workflows within the MU platform

Preferred / Advanced Responsibilities

• Contribute to force field development, optimization, and validation for electrolyte or ion-containing systems
• Explore higher-accuracy or higher-efficiency simulation methodologies
• Participate in the engineering and platformization of simulation workflows, including workflow automation, orchestration, and task scheduling

Qualifications

• PhD (or PhD candidate) in Computational Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, or a related field
• Hands-on experience with molecular dynamics simulations, particularly for liquid-phase systems
• Familiarity with common simulation tools such as GROMACS, LAMMPS, OPENMM, or similar packages
• Experience with electrolyte systems, ionic systems, battery-related simulations, or sodium-ion systems is strongly preferred
• Understanding of molecular force fields, including basic principles of force field development and parameterization; direct experience is preferred
• Programming skills in Python or similar languages for data analysis, workflow automation, and simulation pipeline development
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose simulation instability, convergence issues, and physical inconsistencies
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, international research environment

Senior Battery Cell Modeling Scientist - Simulation

Responsibilities

• Responsible for building cell mathematical simulation models (physical models and data-driven models) to predict the performance of Li-ion batteries/Li-metal batteries under various working conditions, including dynamic performance, lifetime decay, electrochemical and thermal response, and safety-related cell behavior

• Design and advance experiments to obtain parameters/data required to build cell models

• Work with cross-functional teams to develop, deploy, test, and maintain models

• The electrochemical/thermal data of the cell under different working conditions are generated by using the certified physical model of the cell to provide data support for the establishment of the data-driven model

• Establish a standardized process for cell physical modeling to reduce the resources/time required for modeling

• Provide documentation related to model and algorithm development

• Work with the battery team to determine and achieve battery performance life goals

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or above, more than 5 years of battery related research/work experience

• Basic knowledge of cell electrochemistry (P2D), thermal, mechanical modeling and simulation. Familiar with electrochemical principle, simulation parameter measurement method and corresponding equipment

Cell Engineer

Responsibilities

• Participated in customer projects of power cell and promoted the development of customer projects

Senior Battery AI/ML Engineer

• Build a data-driven model of battery based on electrochemical knowledge and test data

Process Engineer (Senior Engineer / Engineer)

Mechanical Engineer

• Responsible for the analysis and evaluation of power battery cell selection, structural materials and product structure design scheme according to customer SOR

• Responsible for the schematic design of power battery PACK battery system and modules, detailed design of 3D digital model and 2D drawings

• Responsible for the safety and reliability design of power battery PACK battery system and module level

• Experience in composite material structure design and structural airworthiness verification of aircraft is preferred

• Familiar with battery electrical related professional knowledge, battery selection and testing experience is preferred

Senior Material Engineer

Equipment Electrical Engineer

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the assembly and debugging of the company's non-standard automation equipment

BMS BSW Software Engineer

Responsibilities

• Responsible for BMS BSW development, testing and maintenance
• Responsible for configuration and debugging of BMS AUTOSAR BSW

Equipment Development Engineer

Responsibilities

• Import equipment according to the company's capacity planning requirements

• Responsible for technical input, technical confirmation, technical benchmarking, equipment manufacture, installation, commissioning, acceptance and delivery

• Responsible for tracking, coordinating and managing the project schedule of new equipment introduction; familiar with the principle and core requirements of lithium electric equipment is preferred

• Responsible for following up the construction and internal installation progress, and confirming whether the site construction meets the equipment installation requirements

• Collect and sort out related engineering data after new equipment is imported, and output related equipment management files

• Familiar with the development of lithium equipment industry and suppliers, and have relevant supplier resources and management experience

Thermal Runaway Protection Engineer

Responsibilities

• Responsible for simulation analysis and optimization design of power battery modules and system thermal runaway, thermal diffusion and exhaust

• Responsible for the mining and application of new technologies, new materials and new processes for thermal runaway protection of battery packs and modules

• Responsible for the development and optimization design of protective parts and materials for thermal runaway of battery packs and modules, to ensure that the thermal design can meet the needs of thermal runaway and thermal diffusion

• Responsible for the simulation analysis and optimization design of battery pack system and module thermal management

• Responsible for the design of power battery thermal safety related products, analysis of advantages and disadvantages of schemes, and verification of technical solutions

• Responsible for the preparation of technical plans for thermal management and the output of relevant technical documents

Qualifications

Senior Project Management Engineer

Responsibilities

• Lead materials characterization and validation activities.

Qualifications
