About the Role
What you’ll be doing
- Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of scalable and resilient cloud infrastructure on platforms spanning AWS and GCP. Ensure high availability, reliability, and performance of critical systems
- Collaborate with your peers to be responsible for the entire software lifecycle, seek the right problem to solve, and strive for excellence
- Manage individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables related to your technical expertise and assigned domains
- Lead incident response efforts, working closely with cross-functional teams to resolve issues quickly and minimize downtime. Implement effective incident management processes and post-incident reviews
- Collaborate with security teams to ensure the integrity and security of infrastructure and applications. Implement security best practices and compliance standards
- Identify performance bottlenecks and optimize system resources for maximum efficiency. Conduct regular performance tuning and capacity planning exercises
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the team and across the organization. Proactively identify areas for enhancement and implement solutions to address them
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of systems, processes, and procedures. Foster a culture of knowledge sharing and contribute to the collective learning of the team
- Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation, and be available to work with global teams in the event of critical outages
We’re excited if you have
- 12+ years of experience in DevOps/SRE roles
- Experience in cloud-focused software development, preferably in Go, Python, or other object-oriented programming languages
- Experience with a number of the following: ECS, Docker, Kubernetes, Envoy, Istio, Linkerd, Solo
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and cloud-native technologies
- The drive and self-motivation to understand the intricate details of a complex infrastructure environment
- Strong proficiency in cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
- Solid understanding of networking, security, and compliance principles
- Proven track record of driving results and delivering high-quality solutions in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical project stakeholders, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
- Certifications in relevant technologies such as Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) are preferred
- BS Degree in Computer Science or Equivalent

About the Role
We are seeking a seasoned Senior Backend Engineer to join the Roku APPS team and help shape our large-scale, consumer-facing platform. In this role, you will design, build, and operate highly available and scalable distributed services used by millions of devices worldwide. You will collaborate closely with Product and Design teams to drive features from concept to production, mentor engineers, and influence architectural decisions across the platform.
This role is ideal for a self-starter who thrives on solving complex problems at scale, has a strong operational mindset, and enjoys balancing hands-on engineering with strategic impact. For California Only - The estimated annual base salary for this position is between $250,000 - $280,000 annually. Compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, certifications, and specific geographical location. What you'll be doing
- Build and own large-scale platform services used internally and by millions of devices.

We're excited if you have
- 8+ years of experience designing, building, and operating large-scale backend and distributed systems.
- Strong software development experience (Java preferred).
- Expertise in building large-scale cloud services in AWS and/or Google Cloud.
- Deep understanding of infrastructure fundamentals (networking, compute, storage, containers) with hands-on experience troubleshooting Kubernetes clusters and distributed systems in production.
- Experience selecting appropriate data stores and analyzing performance, scalability, and consistency trade-offs.
- Track record of monitoring deployments and diagnosing production issues.
- Strong understanding of end-to-end web architecture, from client devices to backend services.
- Bachelor’s degree in CS, CE, or equivalent experience.

We're now looking for a talented and experienced Backend Engineer to join Roku APPS team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in microservices. What you will be doing
- Build extremely large-scale platform products and services, used both by Roku engineers from across the company, and directly by consumers across millions of devices
- Work with Product/Design teams to iterate and build software, taking a concept from ideation to its production deployment and support
- Lead efforts to evaluate new technologies and continue to push for best practices across the entire development life cycle, including code and design reviews
- Managing project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables
- Participate in Agile development process, including scoping, technical design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance
We're excited if you have
- 8+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems
- 5+ years working with cloud-based platforms and infrastructure
- An understanding of system concepts and approaches such as eventual consistency and CAP theorem
- Ability and desire to lead the design and implementation of backend services coupled with a deep understanding of different data platforms
- Deep experience in building microservices using Java for container platforms such as Docker or Kubernetes
- Solid understanding of databases such as Aurora MySQL and DynamoDB
- Hands-on Experience working with AWS ALB, ECS, RDS, or similar cloud services
- Experience with a breadth of protocols and data formats such as REST, WebSockets, HTTPS, JSON, and Protobuf
- Demonstrated ability to drive timely consensus in design with other senior team members

- You will design, implement and maintain an active-active multi-cloud infrastructure on AWS and GCP supporting business-critical systems ensuring high availability and performance with automation, delivering systems that stays reliable and performs under stress

Roku fosters an inclusive and collaborative environment where teams work in the office Monday through Thursday. Fridays are flexible for remote work except for employees whose roles are required to be in the office five days a week or employees who are in offices with a five day in office policy.
