About the Team
Roku offers millions of options to our users: movies, episodes, news, sports, and channels from all around the world. The Roku Content Platform team is key to onboarding content into the Roku ecosystem, delighting our customers. Building a content knowledge platform that provides insights to downstream systems like Search, Recommendations, Ads, and Voice to shape customers' experiences is why we’re actively looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Content Platform who can drive further innovation.

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our backend and data team. This role is crucial for designing, building, and optimizing distributed data pipelines, real-time data processing systems, and backend solutions that handle large-scale data effectively. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Java, distributed systems, and big data technologies, as well as a passion for solving complex problems and delivering robust solutions. We’re always in “build mode” because we’re a company of data-focused builders. Every day, you’ll look at what exists and find ways to make it better.
For California Only - The estimated annual salary for this position is between $300,000 - $425,000 annually. Compensation packages are based on factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, certifications, and specific geographical location. What you’ll be doing
Design and Development:
- Architect, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems and APIs using Java and Akka.
- Build distributed data pipelines for batch and real-time data processing.
- Design efficient and scalable systems that process large volumes of data.
Big Data Expertise:
- Leverage big data technologies such as, Apache Spark, Kafka, Flink, and related tools to build high-performance data pipelines.
- Work on data transformation, ingestion, and integration for both structured and unstructured data.
- Implement solutions for data lake and data warehouse integrations.
Real-Time Processing:
- Develop and maintain real-time data processing applications to support business-critical use cases.
- Optimize real-time data flows for low latency and high throughput.
Java Expertise:
- Write clean, efficient, and reusable code in Java, adhering to industry best practices.
- Optimize Java applications for performance, scalability, and reliability.
- Leverage Java frameworks such as Spring Boot for backend development.
Monitoring and Optimization:
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize backend and data systems to ensure high availability and reliability.
- Design and implement performance tuning strategies for large-scale distributed systems.
We're excited if you have
- 7+ years of experience in backend development and distributed data processing.
- Proven expertise in designing and building scalable systems with Java.
- Hands-on experience with Big Data technologies such as Spark, Kafka, and Flink.
- Proficiency in Java and Java-based frameworks (Spring, Spring Boot, etc.).
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and microservices architecture.
- Experience with cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., DynamoDB, or Aerospike).

About the Role
We are seeking a highly technical, strategic Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Core Content Platform team. In this role, you will define the technical vision and drive the execution of a highly scalable, cloud-agnostic data abstraction layer. You will lead a distributed organization of senior engineers to transition legacy services into a unified, next-generation data platform that natively integrates machine learning and AI capabilities. This is a high-impact leadership position requiring a deep background in distributed systems, real-time data pipelines, and organizational scaling.

What You'll Be Doing

About the Team
Roku’s Voice Team aims to develop the best voice system for TV. We enable users to perform tasks hands-free using voice, such as searching for movies or turning on their TV and launching content. Multiple languages are supported, and our technology also enables Roku’s IOT devices to be controlled by voice.
About the Role
The Senior Technical Program Manager (TPM) for Roku Voice will own the planning and execution of complex, cross‑functional programs that deliver high‑quality voice features and infrastructure at scale. You will be the central coordination point across Voice Engineering, UX, PM, Analytics, QA, and external partners, ensuring that priorities are clear, roadmaps are realistic, and launches are smooth.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead end‑to‑end planning and execution of major Roku Voice programs (e.g., new voice capabilities, regional expansions, infrastructure upgrades), from concept through launch and post‑launch iteration
- Own program structure: requirements, milestones, dependencies, risk management, communication plans, and status reporting across engineering, analytics, QA, and partner teams
- Drive alignment on priorities and scope across teams; ensure that upstream and downstream dependencies are understood and managed
- Coordinate with external voice technology partners and internal platform teams, ensuring integration plans, SLAs, and release timelines are well defined and met
- Track progress of builds, engineering changes, and issue closures with urgency and attention to detail
- Establish and continuously improve program management processes and tooling for the Voice org
- Communicate clearly and crisply at all levels of the organization, from engineers to VP+ stakeholders, including regular status, risks, and trade‑offs
- Anticipate and surface risks early; drive mitigation plans and make data‑informed recommendations on resourcing, sequencing, and scope
We're excited if you have
- 5+ years of technical program management, engineering management, or equivalent experience delivering complex software or ML‑driven products
- Demonstrated experience leading cross‑functional programs that span multiple engineering disciplines (e.g., backend services, ML, data, or platform teams)
- Strong familiarity with at least one of: machine learning, speech/ASR, NLU/NLP, or large‑scale data/experimentation. You do not need to be an ML engineer, but you must be comfortable engaging deeply with technical details
- Proven track record of driving programs from inception to launch, including requirements definition, roadmap planning, risk management, and post‑launch iteration
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; able to drive clarity and decisions among senior leaders and distributed teams
- Hands‑on experience with modern program management and collaboration tooling, including the use of GenAI
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in consumer devices, streaming, voice assistants, or other user‑facing ML products
- Experience working with geographically distributed teams and external technology partners

About the Role
We seek an outstanding, creative, and passionate Machine Learning Platform Engineer to join Roku's Recommendation team. What You'll Be Doing
- Design, build, and maintain scalable platform services: feature store, real-time inference services, vector DBs etc., that serve millions of transactions per second
- Run and monitor online AB tests via robust platform services, analyzing platform metrics and business KPIs to optimize recommendation system performance
- Collaborate closely with US-based engineering and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into modular platform components and APIs
- Enhance and evolve the ML platform ecosystem to support high developer velocity, system scalability, and adaptability to future business needs
- Contribute to onboarding, training, and mentoring new team members on emerging platform engineering best practices and technologies
We’re Excited If You Have
- 5+ years of experience building software solutions to concrete problems
- Strong CS fundamentals. Should be able to write an algorithm with ease
- You are fluent with one of high-level programming languages like Java, Scala, Kotlin or Python
- We’d love to see that you’ve worked with big data systems (Spark, Kafka, Flink, S3, AirFlow)
- Familiar with model ML framework and tools: Ray, PyTorch, HuggingFace, AWS Sagemaker
- AI literacy and curiosity. You have either tried Gen AI in your previous work or outside of work or are curious about Gen AI and have explored it.

About the role
You will be responsible for driving the test automation for The Roku Channel streaming apps, features and services on multiple platforms to improve product quality, increase team productivity and enhancing a culture of continuous quality improvement throughout the software development lifecycle. You will be a self-starter, have endless curiosity, ability to think big along with a bias for action for fast paced, high-quality execution.
What you’ll be doing
- You will be part of the core QA engineering team with a significant ownership to drive automation for The Roku Channel app on multiple platforms like FireTV, GoogleTV, Samsung, Web etc.
- Use AI tools to simplify overall product testing process.
- Utilize and integrate automated test tools, frameworks, systems, and libraries throughout the product lifecycle.
- Build test plans, write automation tests, analyze/troubleshoot failures, track defects, drive resolution, verify fixes and communicate results to stakeholders.
- Build and enhance the automation lab setup.
- Collaborate with multiple cross functional teams like product, UX and engineering to build delightful streaming experiences, fine tune quality of experience, investigate and remediate potential E2E application and streaming quality problems.
We’re excited if you have
- Strong problem solving and analytical abilities, ability to troubleshoot, identify and resolve defects.
- 7+ Years in a Software Engineering or Test Automation role working on large scale web applications on cloud platforms using REST APIs.
- Experience with video streaming domain and technologies like DASH, HLS, MPEG-4, WideVine, FairPlay.
- Strong programming skills in one or more of JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, Go.
- Very good understanding of core CS concepts including operating systems, algorithms, data structures, database and frontend/Web fundamentals including HTML5, CSS.
- Solid experience with one or more automation frameworks like Cypress, Selenium, Cucumber, Appium, JUnit etc.
- Passion for using AI for test automation to dramatically increase execution velocity and improve product quality.
- Familiarity with TDD/BDD paradigms, AI for QA automation.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

About the role
We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Lead Engineer to join our backend and data team. This role is crucial for designing, building, and optimizing distributed data pipelines, real-time data processing systems, and backend solutions that effectively handle large-scale data. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Java, distributed systems, and big data technologies, and a passion for solving complex problems and delivering robust solutions. As a Video Encoding Engineer, you will build, optimize, and maintain high-performance video processing workflows. You will work closely with the team on key video services projects around video ingestion, encoding, VoD/live-linear, Server-Side Ads Insertion, and Video QoS, with the goal of delivering a best-in-class streaming TV experience across all Roku devices. - Design, build, optimize, and maintain FFmpeg-based encoding pipelines for both VOD and Live workflows, operating at scale in cloud environments such as AWS or GCP
- Develop, refine, and validate encoding presets for modern codecs, including H.264, HEVC, and AV1, ensuring optimal quality-to-bitrate performance
- Implement advanced encoding strategies such as multi-pass workflows, CRF tuning, per-title optimizations, and quality-targeted encoding
- Benchmark and evaluate video quality using VMAF and other objective metrics to drive continuous improvements in efficiency and viewing experience
- Build and maintain adaptive streaming packaging workflows, including HLS, DASH, and CMAF, ensuring broad device compatibility and reliable playback
- Profile and optimize system performance by identifying and eliminating bottlenecks across compute, storage, and I/O layers
- Write, review, and improve code, assessing architectural tradeoffs to deliver secure, high-performance, and highly concurrent video infrastructure services
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and platform teams to support and advance company-wide video service initiatives

What you’ll be doing
- Design, build, optimize, and maintain FFmpeg-based encoding pipelines for both VOD and Live workflows, operating at scale in cloud environments such as AWS or GCP
- Develop, refine, and validate encoding presets for modern codecs, including H.264, HEVC, and AV1, ensuring optimal quality-to-bitrate performance
- Implement advanced encoding strategies such as multi-pass workflows, CRF tuning, per-title optimizations, and quality-targeted encoding
- Benchmark and evaluate video quality using VMAF and other objective metrics to drive continuous improvements in efficiency and viewing experience
- Build and maintain adaptive streaming packaging workflows, including HLS, DASH, and CMAF, ensuring broad device compatibility and reliable playback
- Profile and optimize system performance by identifying and eliminating bottlenecks across compute, storage, and I/O layers
- Write, review, and improve code, assessing architectural tradeoffs to deliver secure, high-performance, and highly concurrent video infrastructure services

Roku’s Search & Recommendations (S&R) Platform Engineering team is central to our mission of delivering outstanding streaming experiences to millions of people around the world. We develop and maintain the core platform that powers search, personalization, and content discovery at scale across every Roku device and service.

About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with experience in building scalable, reliable software to help evolve and extend the infrastructure behind our Search and Recommendations platform. In this role, you’ll be part of a cross-functional, globally distributed team dedicated to creating fast, cost-efficient solutions that deliver relevant and seamless user experiences.
You’ll contribute to the design, development, and operation of critical software and systems that power real-time search and personalised recommendations for millions of users. We’re Excited If You Have
- 8+ years of professional experience building large-scale distributed systems
- Proficiency in modern backend languages (Java, Python, Go) and scalable cloud-native architectures (AWS, Kubernetes, service meshes, etc.)
- Experience collaborating with engineers and product stakeholders to shape features and systems

With so many people relying on us for great movies, TV, and news - scaling, reliability, fallbacks, and automation of these scenarios are always at the top of our mind as we continuously add features to the platform. We work very closely with the product team and pride ourselves on quickly iterating on features from prototypes to A/B tests to eventual release to all users. It's still early days for this platform, with plenty of challenging and interesting problems to work on.

About the role
The person in this role will leverage their technical skills, business intuition, and analytical thinking to build best-in-class machine learning products. This includes integrating Generative AI capabilities and Vision Models to enrich content quality and user engagement. What you’ll be doing
- Building and owning the next generation of content knowledge platforms and other algorithms/systems that create high quality and unique experiences for millions of Roku users.
- Designing and implementing advanced Machine Learning models for entity matching, data deduplication, and Generative AI tasks such as content summarization. deduping and metadata quality.
- Researching and developing advanced AI algorithms, including Vision Models for visual content analysis, and enhancing the Content Knowledge Graph.
- Developing and maintaining Deep Learning models for data quality checks, visual similarity scoring, and content tagging.
- Implementing KPI measurement frameworks to evaluate the quality and performance of delivered models, including those utilizing Generative AI.
- Creating products that provide exceptional user experiences while meeting performance, security, quality, and stability requirements.
We’re excited if you have
- 7+ years of experience applying Machine Learning and GenAI to concrete problems at large-scale.
- Strong CS fundamentals, with the ability to design algorithms for real-world challenges.
- Expertise in machine learning fundamentals, including deep generative models (GANs, VAEs), transformers, tree-based methods, and sequence-based models.
- Proven familiarity with NLP approaches like BERT, GPT, or related architectures, as well as Vision-based approaches like ResNet, EfficientNet, or CLIP.
- Experience in big data systems (e.g., Spark, EMR, Kafka, S3, Flink, AirFlow) and programming (Java, Scala, or Python).
- A track record of building in-production Machine Learning systems, including deploying Generative AI and Vision Model-based pipelines.
- Knowledge of system architecture and experience with big data technologies (e.g., streaming architectures, scalable data pipelines).
- An understanding of state-of-the-art Vision Models for tasks such as image classification, object detection, and multimodal learning.
- AI literacy and curiosity.You have either tried Gen AI in your previous work or outside of work or are curious about Gen AI and have explored it.

About the role
