About the Role
We are building a next-generation observability and cloud platform that is high-performance, cost-efficient, secure, and scalable across multi-region, multi-cloud clusters. You will lead the architecture and evolution of Roku’s observability and cloud infrastructure stack. This includes metrics, logs, traces, telemetry pipelines, service mesh, developer experience, and reliability of systems that power thousands of services and millions of devices.
You will drive a vision where developers gain deep visibility with minimal overhead, onboarding is seamless, and insights are available in real time. Your work will directly help Roku scale efficiently while maintaining reliability, cost control, and performance.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Architect and lead Roku’s observability platform across metrics, logs, and traces; evolve data pipelines and storage layers optimized for high throughput, performance, and cost at Roku scale (TSDBs, Parquet, distributed processing).
- Extend and harden open‑source observability systems; overhaul core components (e.g., storage layers, query paths) to improve performance, reliability, and usability at scale.
- Implement features such as pre‑aggregation, down-sampling, and sampling to reduce load and accelerate queries across the platform.
- Collaborate across platform, SRE, and product teams to migrate hundreds of workloads to our common platform; augment and automate CI/CD flows and onboarding.
- Integrate security into infrastructure and platform services; ensure robust multi‑tenant, multi‑cluster, and multi‑cloud designs.
- Contribute improvements back to open source and CNCF‑aligned projects; shape standards adoption (OpenTelemetry, OpenMetrics) across the company.
- Mentor engineers; establish best practices for reliability, efficiency, and cost management across service mesh and observability domains.
What You'll have
- 15+ years in software engineering with a track record of architecting distributed systems or platforms at scale.
- Strong hands‑on experience in Golang and one scripting language (e.g., Python or Shell).
- Experience operating observability at pb-scale ingestion and hundreds of millions of series.
- Expertise in observability platforms and tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Tempo, ELK/OpenSearch, ClickHouse) and standards (OpenTelemetry, OpenMetrics).
- Deep experience building systems of scale and operating cloud infrastructure with Kubernetes; strong proficiency with service mesh technologies (Istio/Envoy), infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform) and experience in multi‑cloud (AWS, GCP)
- Demonstrated ability to evolve storage and query architectures for cost, scale, and latency (e.g., TSDB, Parquet, distributed processing).
- Proven experience integrating security as part of infrastructure and platform development.
- Exceptional cross‑functional communication; effective collaboration with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

About the Team
The Cloud Technology Infrastructure team at Roku is looking for a dedicated engineer to join our Cloud Infrastructure Operations group. As a pivotal team, we’re committed to building a scalable, secure, and reusable infrastructure platform that empowers all Roku teams to deliver with speed and confidence. Embracing an ‘Infrastructure as Code (IaC) First’ methodology, we’re eager to onboard a professional who’s ready to partner across teams to build foundational components in Networking, Infrastructure, Identity Management, and Security.

What you’ll be doing
- Collaborate with development teams to enhance their cloud service management capabilities, ensuring they can independently deploy, monitor, and maintain their services.
- Implement monitoring and observability solutions that provide real-time insights into infrastructure health, enabling proactive issue resolution and system optimization.
- Participate in a shared On-Call rotation to support critical infrastructure incidents, IAC CI pipeline issues, and cloud networking escalations, ensuring high availability and rapid incident response.
- Design and implement network observability solutions that provide end-to-end traffic visibility across cloud networking—including Kubernetes, VPCs, routing, peering, and cross-cloud connectivity—by collaborating with the Platform team to provide granular, real-time insights into cloud-native networking, leveraging visualization platforms and telemetry data to support troubleshooting and performance optimization.
- Partner with technical leaders on the Infra Roadmap to fortify our infrastructure security, leveraging cutting-edge automation tools for proactive defense strategies.
- Develop frameworks into Infrastructure as Code (IaC) workflows, promoting reusable and adaptable infrastructure components deployed via CI/CD.
- Advocate for cloud cost optimization strategies, ensuring efficient resource utilization and cost-effective infrastructure management.
- Champion best practices across all functions, including development, QA, and Infrastructure/Operations, to foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
We’re excited if you have
- 7+ years of experience designing and operating scalable, resilient cloud-native systems, with a focus on automation, observability, and developer enablement.
- Deep expertise in public cloud networking (AWS/GCP), including VPC design, peering, routing, NAT gateways, and service endpoints.
- Developer skills in Python, Java, or Go writing applications and code that will bring together data from disparate systems and will work to help visualize data in a way that will make business decisions easier.
- Experience managing and debugging traffic flows between Kubernetes workloads and cloud-managed services, with a strong understanding of how service discovery, DNS, and overlay networks impact observability.
- Proven ability to architect and implement network mapping and visualization solutions (e.g., using tools like Istio telemetry, or custom Grafana dashboards) to provide actionable insights into traffic behavior and dependencies.
- Required experience building and managing complex networks in public cloud providers like AWS, GCP and integrating them with cloud-native platforms, such as Kubernetes.
- Hands-on advanced experience utilizing cloud-native services in large scale environments with AWS/GCP using Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform) and other CI/CD tools/services.
- Experience enabling monitoring solutions to visualize and create alerts for core infrastructure with one or more of the following: Grafana, Prometheus, and Datadog.
- Experience driving timely consensus in design with other senior team members across a large organization.
- Experience with how to create infrastructure using CI, Continuous Delivery, and Continuous Deployment workflows; GitLab experience desired.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to help communicate complicated workflows to a broad and diverse user group.
- B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.

About the Role
You will work on core observability systems (metrics, logs, traces) while also developing robust data pipelines and storage solutions optimized for high throughput, performance, and cost. You’ll leverage technologies such as time-series databases (TSDB), columnar storage formats (e.g., Parquet), and distributed data processing frameworks to advance the platform’s capabilities. Collaboration with cross-functional teams will be critical, as you’ll integrate observability into Roku’s cloud-native stack and contribute improvements back to the open-source community.
- Extend and integrate open-source observability systems, and when needed, structurally overhaul core components, such as storage layers and query paths, to improve performance, reliability, and usability of these tools at scale.
- Build services to improve performance, usability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Implement features like pre-aggregation, downsampling, and sampling to reduce load and accelerate queries.
- Create developer-facing capabilities for metrics, logs, and traces usage, data quality, and cost management.
- Automate onboarding, dashboards, alerting, and tracing.
- Collaborate across platform and infrastructure teams to integrate observability into Roku’s cloud-native stack.
What We’re Looking For
- Extensive experience in software engineering building distributed, high-throughput systems or observability platforms.
- Hands on Go experience; our observability ecosystem is Go-based, making it the most effective language for this role.
- Experience with, or strong interest in, observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Tempo, ELK/OpenSearch, Clickhouse) and standards (OpenTelemetry, OpenTracing, OpenMetrics).
- Deep understanding of distributed systems and data models
- Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).

About the Team
Our Cloud Compute Platform Engineering team is at the heart of Roku’s transformation toward a single, unified platform. We design and scale Kubernetes clusters, service mesh architecture, and supporting systems to ensure all engineering teams speak the same infrastructure language. We partner with internal teams to migrate workloads, enhance CI/CD pipelines, and integrate observability and security into every layer of the stack. Collaboration and impact are core to what we do.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Architect, design, and deploy Roku’s next-generation cloud platform and service mesh.
- Build and own solutions to Roku's compute problems using Docker, Kubernetes, Istio/Envoy, Terraform and scripting to evolve our tech stack and deployments.
- Proactively drive the research and implementation of new technologies to enhance scalability, reliability, and developer experience.
- Integrate security best practices into infrastructure design and automation.
- Build tooling to visualize inefficiencies and optimize costs across shared-tenancy clusters, including network traffic insights, cross-cluster communication efficiency, and cost attribution.
- Collaborate with internal teams to migrate workloads to Kubernetes + Istio, leveraging open-source observability tools.
- Work closely with the Observability team to scale monitoring and logging solutions for a holistic view of the platform.
- Leverage SRE principles to maintain high availability and streamline onboarding workflows.
- Mentor team members and help define best practices for infrastructure and automation.
We’re Excited If You Have
- Strong hands-on experience with cloud technologies (AWS preferred; GCP or Azure is a plus), specifically in architecting and managing performant, large-scale systems handling significant traffic/data.
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes (EKS, GKE, AKS, or similar) and service mesh technologies.
- Proficiency in Go or another programming language, Python or another scripting language.
- Experience designing infrastructure and building automation tools, while collaborating with internal team members and external stakeholders.
- Experience building CI/CD pipelines and following modern deployment practices.
- Familiarity with observability tools (Prometheus, Thanos, Loki, Grafana, etc.).
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Passion for learning and solving complex infrastructure challenges.
- Experience integrating AI tools to improve processes and reduce operational toil (a plus).
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience (8+ years preferred).
