Project Engineer, Energy Storage

Position Summary:

Redwood Materials is currently searching for a Project Engineer to join as an early member of a new engineering team working on our Battery Energy Storage System product line. You will own the full project lifecycle - from commercial scoping and BD handoff through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and structured handoff to Operations and Maintenance - for a growing portfolio of utility-scale and behind-the-meter storage projects. 

You are the connective tissue between Business Development, Product Engineering, EPC partners, and customers. You drive schedule, manage risk, and ensure every project is delivered on time, on budget, and to spec.

The ideal candidate is highly self-driven, adaptable to a startup environment, and comfortable operating where processes are still being built. You’re a doer and a builder, excited about working in a dynamic, fast-paced setting, and want to shape how Redwood delivers energy storage projects at scale. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Drive end-to-end project execution from requirements scoping and BD handoff through engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and O&M handoff
• Own the integrated end-to-end schedule, budget tracker, and risk register for each assigned project; proactively identify and escalate schedule or cost risks
• Serve as the primary interface between Business Development, Product Engineering, EPC partners, and customers across all project phases
• Track RFI and submittal workflows, change order logs, permitting, interconnection coordination, and all contractual project deliverables
• Partner with Product Engineering on equipment selection, BOM alignment, and technical scope definition for each project
• Oversee commissioning readiness and test plan execution; manage structured handoff documentation to O&M
• Maintain project data in Smartsheet, SharePoint, and relevant PM tooling; provide S&OP planning inputs and deployment forecasting to leadership
• Capture lessons learned and contribute to the development of repeatable delivery templates, checklists, and execution standards

Desired Qualifications:  

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Program Management, Business, or a related discipline
• 5+ years of program management experience in energy storage, renewable energy, or utility-scale power infrastructure
• Demonstrated experience managing projects from scoping through commissioning and O&M handoff, with ownership of schedule, budget, and risk

Staff Finance Associate, Energy Storage

We're looking for a Staff Finance Associate to join our Energy Storage group in San Francisco. In this role, you'll serve as the financial backbone of our supply chain and product cost operations, driving BOM transparency, cost optimization, and supply chain financial rigor across our energy storage business. You'll own end-to-end BOM cost management and lead cost reduction initiatives across the supply chain.

Responsibilities will include:

• Own and maintain detailed bill of materials cost models across all energy storage products, including raw materials, cells, modules, power electronics, balance of system, and packaging — ensuring accuracy, version control, and visibility across the organization
• Develop and manage should-cost models to benchmark components and subassembly pricing against market rates and supplier quotes
• Identify, quantify, and track cost reduction initiatives across the supply chain in partnership with engineering, procurement, and operations — including supplier negotiations, design-to-value opportunities, and make-vs-buy analysis
• Analyze supplier cost structures and logistics economics to inform sourcing strategy and risk mitigation

Global Supply Chain Manager, Energy Storage

The Global Supply Chain Manager will work closely with engineering, operations, and other functional teams to drive suppliers election, manage supplier agreements, and optimize procurement strategies. This role will optimize cost, quality, and availability of a range of components, sub-assemblies, and finished goods in support of Redwood’s product offering.

Responsibilities will Include:

• Develop a sourcing strategy for a given set of components
• Lead supplier selection activities
• Collaborate with engineering in order to understand key requirement that must be conveyed to potential suppliers
• Drive cost reduction and inventory management strategies that ensure availability of component while minimizing inventory carrying costs

We're looking for a Business Operations Analyst, Energy Storage, to support the commercial growth of our utility-scale battery energy storage business. You'll be the operational backbone of our sales organization, driving data-informed decision-making, optimizing our sales processes, and enabling cross-functional collaboration to accelerate our market penetration.

Functional Safety Engineer, Energy Storage

Redwood Materials is pioneering a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries by transforming recycled materials into critical inputs for energy storage and next-generation battery technologies. We are seeking a motivated and experienced Functional Safety Engineer to join our team and play a key role in ensuring compliance with functional safety standards and advancing the safe deployment of new energy storage system (ESS) technologies. 

Responsibilities will include: 

• Functional Safety & Compliance: Lead compliance activities for ESS functional safety with a focus on UL 1998 (Software in Programmable Components), UL 991 (Tests for Safety-Related Controls Employing Solid-State Devices), and UL 5500 (Remote Software Updates). Support certification efforts and align product development with functional safety requirements
• Standards Application & Development: Apply safety principles and methodologies to ESS hardware and software. This role supports an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) organization that performs routine monitoring, preventive maintenance, and first-line troubleshooting. Service Engineering serves as the technical escalation path for O&M, owning deep diagnostics, system-level failure analysis, and engineering-driven corrective actions. 

The Service Engineer ensures safe, reliable, and high-performing asset operation by bridging field operations and engineering, translating operational issues into engineering solutions, and feeding field learnings back into product and system design. This role has the potential of growing into leadership as the team grows.

We are seeking a highly technical Operations Program Manager to lead build readiness & internal ramp execution for hardware manufacturing. This role requires strong hands-on manufacturing engineering instincts, the ability to dive into process capability and equipment readiness, and real experience improving throughput, yield, and reliability at production facilities. You will manage builds from prototypes to mass production, working with cross-functional teams to ensure processes are capable and stable at scale.

Responsibilities will include:

• Drive cross-functional execution from NPI through mass production, aligning Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Quality, Finance, and external stakeholders to meet build and ramp targets

We are seeking a Codes and Standards Lead to represent Redwood across the codes, standards, and regulatory ecosystem impacting energy storage systems. This role is responsible for shaping how emerging technologies are regulated, permitted, and deployed, while enabling safe, scalable innovation in a rapidly evolving industry. 

This position is a senior technical thought-leadership role that operates at the intersection of engineering, compliance, policy, and industry advocacy. 

Responsibilities will include:

• Codes and Standards Leadership and Influence: Lead Redwood’s engagement with codes and standards bodies, trade associations, and industry working groups relevant to energy storage systems. Actively influence the development, interpretation, and adoption of codes and standards to remove unnecessary barriers to deployment while maintaining a high bar for safety.
• Hands-On Standards Development (Near Term): Initially, this role will be highly hands-on, with active participation in code hearings, technical task groups, standards committee meetings, and working sessions. Success in the early phase of the role will be driven by technical credibility, consistent engagement, and substantive contributions across multiple forums.
• Strategic Ownership and Evolution (Long Term): Over time, this role will evolve toward setting strategy for where and how Redwood engages across the codes and standards landscape. This includes determining which forums warrant leadership, where coalition-based engagement is appropriate, and how Redwood’s positions are coordinated across topics and organizations.
• Trade Association and Industry Engagement: Work closely with trade associations, peer companies, utilities, insurers, fire service organizations, and other industry partners to establish best practices, align technical positions, and collaboratively develop new guidance, codes, or standards where none currently exist.
• Thought Leadership and Best Practice Development: Serve as a technical thought leader on energy storage safety and deployment. Contribute to and author technical position papers, white papers, and best-practice guidance, particularly in emerging or ambiguous areas of regulation.

You will work cross-functionally to define requirements, analyze designs, and design tests to meet high reliability standards in real-world conditions, including both electrical and mechanical failure modes.

• Deep knowledge of electronic and mechanical failure mechanisms (e.g., solder fatigue, corrosion, delamination, sealing failures, thermal expansion mismatch, material fatigue, etc.)
• Proficiency in statistical analysis tools (e.g., Minitab, JMP, or Python)

Engineering Test Technician, Energy Storage

As an early member of a new engineering technician team, you will play a key role in building, setting up, and running tests to support the development of a new product at Redwood Materials. You’ll work hands-on across mechanical, electrical, and basic software tools to help validate product performance and reliability. You will support all phases of the hardware development lifecycle from early design validation and long-term reliability testing to final process validation by assembling test setups, operating equipment safely, capturing data, and troubleshooting issues as they arise. This role requires a proactive, can-do attitude with careful attention to detail and a strong safety mindset.

Hours: Full-time, Days

Responsibilities Will Include:

• Build, set up, and execute validation tests for a new electromechanical product
• Partner with cross-functional teams (design, reliability, and abuse engineers) to support FMEAs and test plan execution
• Assemble, install, and maintain test infrastructure such as fixtures, sensors, actuators, chambers, and power supplies
• Operate test equipment, follow procedures, and ensure safe handling of high-voltage systems and lab hardware
• Collect, organize, and document test data, observations, and results clearly and consistently
• Perform basic failure triage and support failure analysis through teardown, inspections, and root-cause investigations
• Troubleshoot test setups and hardware issues; escalate and collaborate to resolve blockers quickly
• Support test automation and data logging tools (e.g., running scripts, validating outputs, contributing small updates as needed)
• Support New Product Introduction (NPI) line operations by assisting with product assembly, build readiness, and day-to-day troubleshooting. Create, update, and maintain build documentation, including work instructions, assembly procedures, and change logs to ensure accurate and repeatable processes
• Support with the management of lab inventory, organization, and power infrastructure. Assembly and validation of high-voltage harnesses and electrical sub-systems, including wiring, terminations, and integration while ensuring full compliance with electrical safety requirements and site policies

Desired Qualifications:

• Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent hands-on experience in mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, or related fields
• 3+ years of experience in a lab, manufacturing, or test environment (technician, engineering tech, or similar role)
• Experience working with or around high-voltage systems (400–2000VDC and 480–800VAC) and strong safety discipline (LOTO, PPE, safe work practices)
• Strong hands-on skills with mechanical assembly, wiring, sensors, instrumentation, and lab equipment
• Comfortable following test procedures, maintaining detailed documentation, and producing clear test summaries
• Familiarity with basic scripting or automation tools (Python a plus) and the ability to learn new tools quickly
• Strong communication and teamwork skills; able to work effectively with engineers and stakeholders across levels
• A get-it-done attitude—willing to jump in, own tasks end-to-end, and do what’s needed to support the team

Physical Requirements:  

• Ability to perform essential physical tasks such as standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting (up to 25 lbs), typing, and performing repetitive motions
• Manual dexterity to work with small components under a microscope for extended periods, including precision soldering and handling heavy copper assemblies

Working Conditions:  

• Ability to work in working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time
• Occasional travel required and flexibility to work weekends, nights, or on call as needed
