By joining our team as the Senior Director of Engineering, this role is responsible for our mission critical products. You will lead a high-impact engineering organization of 10-15 people. This role requires a versatile leader who can directly manage core teams while simultaneously coaching and scaling other teams through a direct-report Engineering Manager. Your work will help to:

• Drive the comprehensive platform strategy and execution that will serve as the core technological enabler for next-generation, AI-based services. This platform is foundational to injecting intelligence and automation across the entire clinical trials life cycle, from protocol design and site selection to patient recruitment, data management, and regulatory submission.
• Lead the development of "Steel Threads": end-to-end working software deployed to production that solve specific, high-friction site use cases (e.g., simplifying patient enrollment or site-specific study instructions).
• Oversee the acceleration strategy to enable continuous delivery without additional risk, ensuring the Site App remains performant and reliable, all while operating in a highly regulated industry.

The expected salary range for this role is $190,000 - $250,000 USD per year for full time team members.

As a hands-on Data Engineering Manager, you will lead the expansion and maintenance of our core data infrastructure while architecting custom partner integrations. You’ll be responsible for defining technical requirements for secure data exchange, ensuring the timely delivery of team objectives, and overseeing the operational health of our platform. Ultimately, your team provides the critical foundation that enables the company to build and scale impactful data products. 

What You’ll Be Working On

• Strategic Leadership & Alignment: Collaborate with the Senior Director of Engineering to align a team of three reports with internal roadmaps and broader business objectives. 
• Infrastructure & Orchestration:  Drive the evolution of our modern data warehouse and orchestration architecture by scaling reliable integrations while simultaneously integrating secure, AI-powered tools to enhance data lineage and documentation, ultimately boosting developer productivity and delivering measurable organizational value 
• Technical Governance: Establish and enforce rigorous best practices for data modeling, quality, observability, and security while ensuring compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, and other regulatory frameworks. 
• Team Development:  Provide dedicated technical leadership to the data engineering team by mentoring and managing performance, while actively overseeing task breakdowns and team coordination to ensure the successful, on-time delivery of critical projects 
• Partner Integration: Work alongside internal and external stakeholders to plan, build, and deploy custom data integration solutions. 
• Operational Excellence: Drive a culture of reliability by overseeing on-call processes, incident management, capacity planning, and infrastructure cost monitoring. 
• Service Level Management: Ensure timely resolution of technical issues and manage escalations in strict alignment with established Service Level Agreements (SLAs). 
• Quality & Compliance: Execute quality review processes to maintain adherence to service standards and contractual obligations. 
• Cross-Functional Support: Act as a technical liaison for external partners, providing high-level support and ensuring seamless data flow across the ecosystem. 

What You’ll Bring to OneStudyTeam

• Have 6+ years of hands-on data engineering experience with 3+ years of consistent agile leadership experience, ideally in a relevant industry working on regulated data 
• Incredible people skills, communication, and organizational skills 
• Deep practical experience with AWS (Redshift, Athena RDS (Postgres), S3, MSK, Glue, Lake Formation, etc.), Kafka, Apache Iceberg, and data orchestration tools such as Terraform, Prefect, and dbt 
• Experience with Python, SQL, back-end development and shell scripting 
• Deep technical knowledge in data modeling, data replication, and database design 
• Experience designing and operating large-scale, distributed systems with a focus on reliability, performance, and security.  
• Solid software testing, documentation, and debugging practices in the context of distributed systems 
• Experience managing an agile team with modern source control (git), code review, and CI/CD systems and methodologies 
• Knowledge of modern AI and ML tooling, such as vector databases, feature stores, ML platforms (e.g., Vertex AI, SageMaker), and generative AI frameworks and APIs used to build data- and AI-driven products.  
• Familiarity with AI-assisted developer and data tools (e.g., code assistants, AI-powered data quality, lineage, and documentation tools) and how to integrate them into engineering workflows safely and effectively.
