Java Backend Engineer
Hybrid, Bucharest, Romania
JOB OVERVIEW
The Legion application is a high-performance data-driven Java enterprise application that implements sophisticated scheduling and optimization algorithms. It also provides the necessary endpoints for our Web and mobile frontend applications. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be a member of the team responsible for the implementation and evolution of this application. You will need to be able to write secure, efficient, enterprise-quality Java code, and have a deep understanding of the techniques and technologies that are necessary for scalability and performance. You will also need knowledge and experience with data modeling and relational databases. Our application runs on AWS, so experience with containerization and cloud deployments is desirable. We're using Springboot, Hibernate, MySQL, and JSON, so familiarity with these technologies will be helpful. Frontend experience in JavaScript and Angular and/or React is a big plus.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Develop features with high quality and on-time
- Thorough understanding of product area
- Assist with feature design along with CTO/Architect
- Develop features keeping in mind best coding practices including performance and user experience
- Own product quality
- Test features before asking QA engineers to test
- Write unit tests
- Work with QA engineers to test the product end-to-end
- Fix incoming bugs daily: Adhere to bug resolution goals and SLA
- Be able to demo the Legion product end-to-end
- Devise robust solutions that enable product engineering teams to rapidly deliver features in a scalable and performant manner
- Design, build, and support applications from End to End.
- Make data-driven technical decisions
- Use your deep technical knowledge to debug and solve complex technical problems
- Identify and resolve ambiguities in requirements in consultation with the various stakeholders
- Contribute to the long-term team charter and quarterly planning
- Mentor others on the team, and hold a high bar for code quality and standards by conducting design reviews, code reviews, and providing feedback
- Work with QA team to make the feature as Production ready.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related discipline
- Strong individual contributor with the ability to research
- 3-5 years with backend technologies (Java, Spring Boot, MySQL)
- 3-5 years working on building multi-tenant SaaS applications
- 3-5 years experience with designing and building APIs
- 3+ years delivering software in a cloud-based environment (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Professional software development experience
- Proficiency in Java or C++, and object-oriented design skills
- Application architecture and design patterns
- Experience serving as technical lead throughout the full software development lifecycle, from conception, architecture definition, detailed design, scoping, planning, implementation, and testing to documentation, delivery, and maintenance is preferred
- Knowledge of professional software engineering and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
- Experience in the development of distributed/scalable systems and high-volume transaction applications
- Proven ability to lead projects from inception to production
- Strong mastery in communication skills, software architecture design, writing technical documents
- Strong personal work ethic focused on prioritization, being action-oriented, and being driven to achieve positive results

As a global employer, Legion determines pay for positions using local, national, and industry-specific survey data. We evaluate external equity and the cost of labor/prevailing wage index in the relative marketplace for jobs directly comparable to jobs within our company. Our posted salary range is based on national data and may be refined for a candidate's region/town/cost of living. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Design and implement: Build scalable, high-performance, and secure features for our Time & Attendance engine, including time-tracking, scheduling rules, overtime logic, and labor compliance calculations.
- Leverage AI tooling daily: Use AI coding assistants and LLM-powered tools throughout your workflow — code generation, test scaffolding, code review acceleration, documentation, and debugging — and share learnings with your team.
- Own quality: Write comprehensive unit tests, integration tests, and collaborate on automated test suites. AI-generated code still needs rigorous human review and validation.
- Drive technical decisions: Participate actively in architecture discussions, propose solutions, and document trade-offs with clarity.
- Mentor and review: Give substantive code reviews, pair with junior engineers, and model best practices including responsible AI-assisted development.
- Collaborate cross-functionally: Work closely with Product Management, UX, and QA to translate business requirements into robust technical specifications and BDD scenarios.
- Troubleshoot production issues: Diagnose and resolve complex bugs in distributed, high-volume environments with urgency and care.
- Continuously improve: Identify and drive performance, scalability, and reliability improvements across the platform.
- Uphold security standards: Participate in security reviews and ensure implementations comply with industry standards and internal policies.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience: 5-10+ years of professional software development with deep expertise in Java (or C++) in enterprise or SaaS environments.
- AI tooling proficiency: Demonstrated, habitual use of AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Tabnine) in daily development - you should be able to describe specific workflows where AI tooling materially changed how you work.
- Backend depth: Strong command of Spring Boot, REST API design, Hibernate/JPA, and relational databases (MySQL or equivalent), including query optimization and indexing strategies.
- Distributed systems: Solid understanding of microservices architecture, asynchronous patterns, and high-volume transaction handling.
- Cloud & containerization: Hands-on experience with AWS and containerized deployments (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Software craftsmanship: Deep familiarity with coding standards, code review practices, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps principles.
- Testing discipline: Proven ability to write and maintain unit tests, integration tests, and automated test suites - including for AI-generated code.
- Problem-solving: Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and debug complex, multi-layered systems independently.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to document technical decisions clearly for both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES
- AI-native workflow: You've gone beyond autocomplete — you use AI for architecture brainstorming, test generation, spec drafting, PR summaries, and are actively experimenting with agentic coding tools.
- Workforce management or HCM domain experience: Familiarity with time-and-attendance, payroll, scheduling, or labor compliance systems is a significant advantage.
- Frontend exposure: Working knowledge of JavaScript and either Angular or React.
- Leadership track record: Experience informally leading feature teams, running design reviews, or serving as a technical point of contact for a product area.
- Performance engineering: Prior work on query optimization, caching strategies, or throughput/latency improvements in high-volume applications.
- Agile fluency: Comfortable operating in fast-paced sprint cycles with evolving requirements.
- Integrity and judgment: Demonstrated ethical behavior and sound judgment, including when evaluating AI-generated outputs for correctness, bias, and security implications.
In your interviews, we'll ask you to describe:
- Which AI coding tools you use and how frequently.
- A specific example where an AI tool helped you design, refactor, or debug something non-trivially.
- How you validate and review AI-generated code to catch errors, security issues, or performance problems.
- Your view on the limits of current AI coding assistants and where human judgment remains essential.
We are not looking for performative AI enthusiasm. We are looking for engineers who have genuinely integrated these tools into their craft and can think critically about their strengths and failure modes.
