Staff Software Engineer - IAM, Cloud Platform

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to lead developing our Identity and Access Management (IAM) and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) systems, enabling our customers to federate their own identities and protect their organizations’ data. You’ll lead key components of the platform in collaboration with our product team and other engineers, to build the best quantum platform for our customers and partners.
Responsibilities:
- Own the technical vision and architecture for IAM and RBAC systems across the entire platform for multiple products. Design, evolve, and standardize scalable authorization models (RBAC, ABAC, policy-based access) that support complex enterprise use cases
- Drive cross-team initiatives that impact authentication, authorization, and identity lifecycle management.
- Make high-impact architectural decisions around:
- Role modeling and permission hierarchies
- Identity propagation and service-to-service authorization
- Act as the final technical authority on IAM/RBAC design reviews and critical security decisions.
- Ensure IAM and RBAC systems meet high availability, performance, and reliability requirements
- Establish operational standards for: Role changes and permission rollout
- Emergency access and break-glass procedures
- Monitoring and alerting for auth-related failures or abuse
You’d be a good fit with:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a history of technical leadership and shipping large-scale, mission-critical systems
- Deep, expert-level knowledge (4+ years) on designing, building, and operating IAM and RBAC systems in production environments at scale
- Past experience implementing SAML 2.0 in production
- Proven experience designing and leading large-scale, cross-team technical projects from inception to completion, especially track record of leading cross-team initiatives related to identity, access control, or security platforms
- Solid understanding of microservices architecture, event-driven systems, and data consistency patterns.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through a portfolio of technical design documents, architectural diagrams, or public presentations
- Expertise programming backends in Go or JavaScript
- A strong sense of ownership and the ability to navigate ambiguity to drive complex projects forward with a high degree of autonomy
- A practice of using AI in day to day coding
You’d be a great fit with:

- 5+ years experience writing microservices in a kubernetes environment
- Past experience with GCP
- Experience evolving or migrating legacy authentication/authorization systems to modern, scalable architectures
- Deep familiarity with enterprise security requirements, including least privilege, auditability, and compliance constraints
- Experience operating IAM systems that support high availability, low latency, and strict reliability SLOs
- Active participation in the broader tech community (e.g., open-source contributions, conference talks)

The approximate base salary range for this position is $174,520 - $228,492. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity.

As a Staff Software Engineer (SDK) on the Developer Tools team, you will own the programming paradigms, interfaces, and developer experience that IonQ exposes to the world through its quantum SDKs. Your work will define how researchers, enterprises, and the broader open-source community write, optimize, and run quantum programs on IonQ hardware. You will lead the productization and open-sourcing of IonQ's quantum developer tools, setting the standard for usability, documentation, and community engagement across our public-facing SDK ecosystem.
This is a highly visible role at the boundary between IonQ's internal platform and the external developer community. You will set high-level technical standards for SDK architecture, mentor senior engineers and scientists, and provide deep expertise to solve the most challenging problems in quantum programming models, API design, and cross-platform integration. You will work across organizational boundaries, Applications, Compiler, and Engineering, to ensure that IonQ's SDKs are powerful, intuitive, and aligned with cutting-edge quantum research.
Your impact will be measured by the quality and adoption of IonQ's public SDK offerings, the health of our open-source communities, and the successful delivery of cross-functional projects that make quantum computing more accessible to every developer.
Responsibilities:
- Define the technical strategy and roadmap for IonQ's public-facing SDKs, including native SDKs and integrations with ecosystem frameworks (Qiskit, Cirq, Pennylane), ensuring long-term maintainability, performance, and developer adoption.
- Lead the productization and open-sourcing of internal quantum developer tools, establishing release processes, licensing, packaging, and community contribution workflows.
- Serve as the primary architect for the programming paradigms and abstractions IonQ exposes through its SDKs, ensuring they are expressive, ergonomic, and aligned with both current hardware capabilities and the broader quantum software ecosystem.
- Drive the design and implementation of robust, well-documented SDK interfaces for quantum circuit construction, compilation, simulation, and hardware execution.
- Steward IonQ's open-source presence, manage public repositories, triage community contributions, define contribution guidelines, and cultivate a healthy contributor ecosystem.
- Collaborate closely with applications research and compiler teams to evaluate, prototype, and surface novel quantum capabilities (e.g., error mitigation, advanced optimization techniques) as first-class SDK features.
- Oversee comprehensive documentation, examples, tutorials, and quickstart guides to ensure a world-class onboarding and developer experience.
- Establish best practices and mentor engineers on API design, software architecture, testing methodologies, and open-source maintainership.
- Act as a key technical resource for the Applications Engineering team, translating customer needs and partner requirements into SDK features and improvements.
- Champion continuous improvement in software engineering processes, automated testing, CI/CD, and validation standards across the SDK surface area.
You’d be a good fit with:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience.
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a significant portion spent in a technical leadership or architectural role.
- 7+ years of experience designing, developing, and maintaining public-facing SDKs or developer libraries with a strong emphasis on API design and developer experience.
- Deep expertise in Python and experience designing large-scale, developer-facing software systems.
- Demonstrated experience managing or contributing to open-source projects with external contributors, including release management, community engagement, and contribution governance.
- Proven track record of driving complex, cross-functional engineering projects from concept to production delivery.
- A history of mentorship and elevating the technical capabilities of a multi-level engineering team.
- Familiarity with Agentic AI coding tools and techniques, and experience integrating them into modern software development workflows.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of authoring impactful technical documentation, specifications, and developer guides.

Responsibilities:
- Architectural Vision & Strategy: Architect and lead the design and building of our next-generation billing and payments platform. Author technical design documents, RFCs, and roadmaps that align with long-term business goals
- Technical Authority & Mentorship: Act as the ultimate technical authority for the billing domain. Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical oversight to senior engineers and team leads across the organization. Elevate the entire engineering team through best practices and knowledge sharing
- Solve Complex Problems: Spearhead the development of solutions for our most challenging technical problems, such as implementing sophisticated usage-based billing models or expanding into new international markets with complex tax and compliance needs
- Strategic Cross-Functional Influence: Collaborate with senior leadership in Product, Finance, and Legal to influence product strategy and ensure our technical architecture can support future business initiatives. Translate complex business needs into a scalable and maintainable technical reality

At scale, quantum computers will be integrated into classical datacenters — combining the unique strengths of CPUs, GPUs, and QPUs will help us solve the world’s hardest problems. Today, we already use IonQ quantum computers in tandem with high-performance computer (HPC) clusters in applications like quantum machine learning and image analysis. As a Senior Staff Software Engineer leading our HPC integration, you’ll help build and maintain our interfaces with SLURM and other open HPC stacks.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and development of our HPC software stack integrations
- Establish best practices for code development, quality assurance, documentation, and continuous integration and deployment
- Lead and participate in code reviews
- Effectively self-manage projects, priorities, deadlines, and deliverables; Identify, track and mitigate execution roadblocks and technical risks
- Mentor junior staff members; we’ll ultimately be building a team around you!
- Help minimize overhead between classical and quantum resources through efficient scheduling and parallelization
You’d be a good fit with:
