Why Hover wants you
The Estimates Platform team owns the foundational systems that determine what Hover can scope, classify, and price for any structure. If a product needs to know what work a structure requires or what it costs, it starts here.
At its core, this is a recommendation system. You'll ingest disparate data sources (3D model outputs, product catalogs from distribution partners, pricing feeds, and customer inputs), synthesize them into a structured language the rest of Hover can consume, and serve actionable estimates to internal teams, contractors, and insurance partners.
The system is deterministic today, and the core stays that way. AI is how we accelerate the platform's expansion: ingesting new partner catalogs, classifying unfamiliar trades, and learning from every estimate that flows through. As Engineering Manager, you'll lead that evolution, extending the rules-based foundation with AI-driven capabilities that open the platform to new trades and new partners.
You will contribute by
- Own the technical roadmap and business strategy for the Estimates Platform, balancing quarterly delivery with long-term architectural vision.
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers, supporting career development, promotions, and a high-performance culture.
- Drive AI adoption inside the team, pushing engineers toward AI-first workflows and tooling.
- Partner with Product to extend the platform with AI-driven capabilities that accelerate expansion into new trades, distributors, and partner catalogs.
- Navigate tradeoffs when Insurance and Construction need different things from the same platform, and communicate the why to each stakeholder.
- Work across Product, Data Science, Operations, 3D Modeling, and external integration partners to turn ambiguous business problems into scoped engineering work.
- Drive the reliability, accuracy, and scalability of the classification and scoping systems that power estimates across Hover's product surface.
Your background includes
- 7+ years as a hands-on engineer, with experience designing and delivering production systems at scale.
- 3+ years leading engineering teams, with a track record of growing engineers, navigating stakeholder priorities, and driving business-wide impact.
- Experience building and owning platform-layer systems (classification engines, data pipelines, rules engines, or similar foundational infrastructure).
- Strong product intuition and comfort translating ambiguous business problems into clear, scoped engineering work.
- Active, daily user of AI coding tools, with experience coaching engineers on your team toward AI-first workflows.
- Experience shipping AI-driven capabilities into customer-facing products.
Nice to haves:
- Experience in proptech, insurtech, construction tech, or domains involving structured property data or physical-world classification.
- Familiarity with building systems that integrate with external data providers or third-party estimation APIs (e.g., Xactimate, CoreLogic, or similar).
- Experience shipping production ML, inference, or recommendation systems, including the eval, drift, and rollback work that comes with running them in production.
- Experience working with 3D model data, geospatial systems, or computer vision outputs as inputs to downstream business logic.
- Background building configuration-driven systems or decision frameworks that non-engineers can extend.

Hybrid roles at Hover
Hover has Hubs in San Francisco and New York City, where we expect that all employees living within a 50-mile radius of our offices will come into their local Hover office at least three times a week to build rapport and foster organic connection. At this time, Hover is not considering fully remote roles.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $190,000 - $235,000 annually. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all applicable US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. You will contribute by
As a Senior Software Engineer on the team, you’ll work across the stack—primarily in Ruby on Rails, React, and GraphQL, with opportunities to contribute to React Native mobile applications—building robust, scalable systems that power Hover’s core product experiences.
You’ll lead scoped projects and features end-to-end, from technical discovery and design through launch and iteration. Your work will span customer-facing workflows like onboarding, interactive design tools, inspections, and transactional systems, as well as platform capabilities that ensure consistency across the product.
From building polished UIs to modeling backend systems and designing APIs, you’ll help shape how professionals interact with Hover throughout their workflow. You’ll collaborate closely with product and design partners, improve shared systems, and contribute to a healthy engineering culture through mentorship, feedback, and collaboration.
Your background includes
- 5+ years of full stack experience using technologies like Ruby on Rails and React (or similar experience) with a consistent record of contributing to complex, high-impact systems.
- Experience with (or strong interest in learning) React Native and working on production mobile applications
- Strong at building and maintaining scalable APIs (REST and GraphQL) and deploying cloud-native applications (AWS or GCP preferred).
- Experience owning features end-to-end—from breaking down vague product ideas into scoped tickets, to shipping production code, to iterating post-launch.
- Comfortable in distributed systems environments and familiar with queues, asynchronous processing, and the architectural considerations behind building for reliability.
- Proactive in identifying edge cases, making tradeoffs, and balancing engineering quality with delivery speed.
- Strong collaborator who works effectively across disciplines—able to align with product, design, and data partners to define the right solution, not just execute on specs.
- Known for bringing clarity to ambiguity. You ask good questions, raise risks early, and help drive toward shared understanding.
- Committed to team health and mentorship—whether it’s reviewing code, pairing to unblock someone, or offering feedback that helps others level up.

- You’ve shipped intuitive, high-quality UX with strong attention to fit and finish
- You’ve worked on a zero-to-one product that went live and evolved with real customer feedback
- Comfort with modern developer tools, including LLM-powered tools (e.g. Cursor, Claude), to improve productivity, code quality, and iteration speed
- You’ve built for or supported construction, or other skilled trades use cases
- You’ve worked with 3D data, geometry processing, or spatial models—even in a hobby project
