The Role

We’re looking for a Software Engineer II, Fullstack to design and implement solid architectural solutions with the rest of the engineering team, supporting our Pear Assessment product - a platform that provides real-time, interactive formative assessments, enabling teachers to capture diverse student responses, gain instant insights, and adapt instruction across live and self-paced learning environments.

With a passion for solving problems quickly and delivering high-quality code, you will build features that enable real-time formative assessments and actionable learning insights for educators. You’ll work across the full stack—from crafting intuitive React-based classroom experiences and interactive assessment workflows to designing scalable backend services and optimizing data pipelines that power instant feedback and analytics. You will also contribute to OpenSearch-powered semantic search capabilities, enabling fast and relevant discovery across more than 500 million educational documents. What You'll Do

• Design, build, and continually improve our Pear Assessment product and related services
• Build and ship features that power real-time formative assessments and classroom engagement experiences for educators and students.
• Develop & maintain high-performance backend services in Typescript that power the assessment platform
• Develop intuitive, high-performance React interfaces for interactive assessments, dashboards, and data visualization
• Develop and enhance OpenSearch-based semantic search systems to enable fast, relevant discovery across hundreds of millions of educational documents
• Optimize data pipelines and queries to deliver low-latency insights and feedback to teachers during live and asynchronous sessions
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and data teams to translate educational needs into impactful technical solutions.
• Ensure system reliability, scalability, and performance under high usage across classrooms and districts.
• Continuously improve code quality, testing practices, and engineering standards within a collaborative team environment.
• Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives
• Architect and operate cloud-native systems on AWS, leveraging services like SQS for asynchronous processing and event-driven workflows.
• Work with MongoDB and other data stores to model, store, and efficiently query large-scale assessment and engagement data.
• Integrate AWS IoT services where applicable to support real-time classroom device interactions and data ingestion.
• Integrate LLM/AI services to power intelligent features such as automated insights, content generation, and enhanced search relevance.

Who You Are

• 4+ years of professional industry experience building and delivering scalable software features in a production environment
• Strong experience with Javascript/Typescript/Nodejs/Python and familiarity with concurrency patterns, APIs, and service-oriented architecture
• Experience building modern React applications with TypeScript, including working with APIs, state management, and responsive UI components
• Familiarity with designing and consuming APIs (REST/WSS) and contributing to backend services handling moderate to high traffic
• Working knowledge of databases (SQL or NoSQL such as MongoDB/PostgreSQL), including basic query optimization and data modeling
• Understanding of caching concepts (e.g., Redis) and performance optimization techniques
• Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and services like S3, SQS, or similar
• Experience with modern frontend tooling and libraries (e.g., React Query, component libraries)
• Ability to build reliable, maintainable, and scalable features with guidance from senior engineers
• Strong ownership mindset with a focus on code quality, testing, and continuous improvement
• Good communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across teams
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment with a willingness to learn and grow

With your passion for quickly solving problems and ability to implement high-quality code while continuously collaborating with other amazing team members, you will be building features that provide actionable insights for school districts. You'll work across the full stack – from crafting intuitive React dashboards and data visualizations to designing scalable Go backend services and optimizing analytics queries. What You'll Do

• Design, build, and continually improve our Discover product that provides app usage analytics and license management for school districts
• Develop high-performance backend services in Go that aggregate and serve millions of usage data points efficiently
• Build intuitive, data-rich frontend experiences with React and Chakra UI, including interactive dashboards and charts
• Design and implement gRPC and REST APIs for real-time data access and service-to-service communication
• Work with big data technologies, including AWS Athena for analytics queries and HyperLogLog for cardinality estimation
• Optimize SQL database schemas and queries for large-scale analytics workloads
• Build and maintain background workers for data aggregation and processing using SQS and asynchronous patterns
• Integrate with LLM/AI services (Gemini) for intelligent features like contract analysis
• Write high-quality, maintainable code with strong typing, comprehensive tests, and clear documentation
• Contribute to infrastructure-as-code using Terraform for AWS services
• Mentor and coach developers, helping them improve and perfect their skills

Who You Are

• 5+ years of professional industry experience leading and coordinating complex, large-scale features
• Strong Go experience with production-grade services, including concurrency patterns, gRPC, and microservices architecture
• Accomplished in building high-quality React applications with TypeScript, including data visualization and dashboards
• Experienced in designing and implementing APIs (gRPC, REST) and microservices that handle high throughput
• Proficient with SQL databases (PostgreSQL preferred) including complex query optimization, indexing strategies, and analytics workloads
• Experience with data aggregation patterns and building systems that process and summarize large datasets
• Familiar with caching strategies (Redis/Redis Cluster) and multi-tier caching architectures
• Has working knowledge of cloud services (AWS preferred: ECS, Aurora, Athena, S3, SQS)
• Has working knowledge of containerization (Docker) and orchestration platforms (ECS, Kubernetes)
• Experience with modern React tooling and component libraries (Chakra UI, React Query)
• Experience building data visualizations with charting libraries (Recharts, D3, or similar)
• Proven experience delivering highly performant and scalable features

The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Infrastructure to develop and maintain cloud solutions and backend services supporting products used by millions of students and educators. In this role, you’ll use a combination of backend engineering and infrastructure management to drive initiatives that improve reliability, security, and developer velocity across the organization. This position sits on Tech Foundation, a team that manages the core cloud infrastructure, shared data services, and developer tooling that empower our product teams to build innovative, reliable, and secure products. The ideal candidate is comfortable writing production-grade code as well as defining infrastructure standards, and most of all enjoys solving complex problems in a highly collaborative environment.

What You'll Do

• Architect and maintain secure, scalable cloud infrastructure and deployment systems to ensure high availability.
• Design and implement high-performance backend services and shared libraries to support core functionality across our product suites.
• Engineer high-throughput data pipelines and optimize data storage solutions to handle production-scale workloads.
• Write clean, maintainable code and lead initiatives to modernize and improve the health of the codebase.

Who You Are

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a focus on backend systems or infrastructure.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language (e.g. Go, Python, Java), preferably Go.
• Demonstrated experience with major cloud infrastructure providers (AWS preferred). Experience with GCP is a plus.
• Proficiency with various data storage and query technologies, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch. Experience with streaming platforms like Kinesis or Kafka is a plus.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles and tools like Terraform.
• Understanding of containerization (Docker) and modern deployment architectures. Experience with Kubernetes or Serverless is a plus.
• Experience with configuring and optimizing build systems and deployment pipelines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

The typical base salary range for this position is $155,000 - $195,000 per year. The range displayed on this job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire base pay for this position and your pay will be determined by a variety of factors, including your primary work location, skills, qualifications and experience.
